I can't believe all you filthy polluters are celebrating the murder of Gaia. Gaia giveth, we taketh and burneth.

Seriously, check your tariff to make sure they're not charging above the cap per unit and then just cancel your DD. They can't make you pay for more than what you use as long as you keep on top of it. Yep I've checked the tariff on my account on both the smart meter and logged into their website and gas/leccy tariffs and standing charges all correctly pegged just below the cap. And yet they are still insisting on DDing us £533 for the next six months. Maybe that's just what it is and the thing that's fucking it all up in my head is the government line of "no more than £2.5k for an average household"...and being convinced our usage would only be slightly above average. Seems like the only way is to cancel annual pro rata DD charge and pay monthly instead (with DD still). £533 is about £17 a day. My meter is saying I've used £2.28 so far today. Can you go back to annual DD / monthly payments at any time? Shouldn't be a problem changing to pay as you go monthly. Ideally change it before this months payment goes out. It will give you a good idea of exactly how much you use. It seems very high although it depends on circumstances and house size obviously. Seems crazy if they are changing the monthly payment every 6 months. The whole point is to pay the same amount throughout the year. You will be well in credit if you pay 533 a month come March. (unless you have a 6 bed mansion)

Hmmm. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would probably have something to say about this.
But I'm not.

Just had notice from my bank that my mortgage payment is going up as a result of the interest rate rise. It's going up by 3.5% (the repayment that is, not the interest rate).

Took on a lodger - all fine. Clean and tidy woman. She had a dog but said it stays with a friend during the day when she's at work. All good so far.
Last night she asks about leaving the dog while she's at work and I mention I am on call to do a site visit, so best not but ask me in the morning.
Cut to 10am and she bolts, leaving the dog. And I find out she's got an electric heater running right next to her dry clothes hanging up.
/twitches
Not sure she'll last the winter, chaps.

Did you at least tell her that the heating stays at 12 and nobody is allowed to touch it?

You kid but having been in a property that's been on fire, it's not pleasant. As for the dog - not my dog and I'm not having him left alone in the house.

All jokes aside I'd be absolutely livid too if someone left one of those things on unattended, never mind fucking off and leaving their dog behind when I'd said I can't watch it.
Well in fairness I wouldn't mind that last bit too much if it's a cool dog, but I get it.

BBC saying the same. But the guardian and bbc are the worst click bait fuckers out there.
Still, I'm just looking around and I've got a fair stash of candles, torches, batteries.
1970, here we come.

I guess "National Grid comes up with contingency plans for several unlikely, but potentially possible scenarios this winter." wasn't exciting enough as a title.

If you want to subsidise your rental income and if you'd be at all interested I have a mate who might be keen on purchasing some of her pubes. Not sure what your usual set up is eg if you charge per gram or per strand? but I'm sure he'd be happy either way. Obviously you don't have to risk plucking them out yourself, any you find in the bathroom would be fine so long as they've got good structural integrity.
