I think you're forgetting about a certain Annihilation. And a certain little TV show called Defenders of the Realm.

I went to the cinema to see Annihilation.
The CINEMA.
Can you fucking imagine seeing that on the big screen?

1 was cool apart from Sonya actress being dreadful.

Liu Kang, Kano and Shang Tsung are good in ‘95. Scorpion and Sub Zero are good in ‘21. Otherwise both are pretty crap but I’d probably give it to ‘21 at being a better overall movie (in terms of quality and potentially watching it again - it’s on Max so I should). It really needed the actual tournament rather than building up to it, and not bother with the lead character. I don’t remember all that much from it otherwise, but by virtue of not being directed by Anderson it’s better. I really dislike all of his films for shitting over all the IPs.

I'm guessing if she's screaming "I'm Sonja" then that means she is, in fact, Sonja.

16 year old me smugly walked in. The smugness didn't last past the opening.

The greatest Mortal Kombat committed to film is surely the tv series, Mortal Kombat Conquest.
Good action, memorable characters and lots of scantily clad ladies. (Watched when I was a teen on Sky One. It made an impression)

MK21 does that classic thing where the makers are really excited to make a Mortal Kombat film that doesn't actually feature the Mortal Kombat tournament. Also the bad guys insist on cheating despite the fact that literally nobody in the film can beat Sub-Zero in a fair fight.
On the plus side, Joe Taslim is awesome. Hopefully he returns (as Noob Saibot? Is that right?)

MK21 does that classic thing where the makers are really excited to make a Mortal Kombat film that doesn't actually feature the Mortal Kombat tournament. I'd really like to see a back-to-basics approach with the premise and just have a structured fighting tournament, like Bloodsport. I think an interdimensional fighting tournament with rules, tradition and ceremony is a way more intimidating prospect for a human to face than random warriors and monsters just showing up wherever, whenever. Fights could be foreshadowed, with competitors allowed to see their opponents in all their horror, but be made to stew in a cage until it's their turn to fight. The MK characters are gold and it'd create good opportunities to build up some of the better characters.

The trouble is that the games lost all that shit as well. They just don't make sense any more. After Aftermath, I genuinely haven't got a fucking clue what's going on. Mind you, I don't think I've had a clue since MK3. Just give me tournaments. THere's enough characters there and backstory that you could still have a nonlinear and multi protagonist narrative exploring the circumstances behind each one attending etc.

The extra dumb bit about the last one was they only needed 1 more win and the film makes it perfectly clear both sides know earth has no chance of winning an actual tournament.
