Do you want me to break it down episode by episode or just give an overall critique?

Isn’t like the first tv show the showrunners have ever made?
Seems like an insane decision given its the most expensive show ever with incredibly deep lore, a very knowledgeable fanbase and it touches up against (but is legally distinct from) some of the biggest and most influential films of the last twenty years.
It was uneven and was very open to nitpicking but I mostly enjoyed it. Certainly more enjoyment than annoyance. I’ll definitely be watching the second series whenever it comes around.
I think if there was only one thing they did to improve it it would be to push it further away from Peter Jackson’s work and to make it clear that the story is their own, not a direct prequel to those films.

I think the possibility of another Spartacus actor showing up was the single motivating factor that kept me watching to the end, I just didn't give a fuck about literally anything else. If a show can't get me emotionally invested then that to me that is an utter failure, no matter how many zillions of dollars has been spent on production. Despite that I'll still be keeping an eye on S2. 100% agree it needs to do more to differentiate itself from the Jackson films. Stylistically as well - perhaps the UK location shooting (whenever it resumes) will be beneficial in that regard.

Apparently some of the ash they used for the Mount Doom shot was Andy Whitfield.
Yeah fuck you.

I didn't hate the Aldi Hobbits, but their story didn't really amount to much.
Tbh "didn't hate it, didn't really amount to much" is basically this entire show.

But I’ll shut up now. I hate it when someone bangs on about how much they hate something I like and I think I’m annnoying enough without becoming that guy.

Yeah I was hoping it would get better, that the writing would come at least within shouting distance to matching the insane production values.
It didn't.

Apart from there being only about two likeable characters in the whole thing (the dwarf and elf bromance), the acting being a bit shitty, the story relying far too heavily on references to the trilogy, and the lack of anything remotely interesting happening throughout the entire runtime, it was pretty good.
Ah.

You forgot only having about an hours worth of plot to fill 10 episodes, so we were treated to thrilling plots such as ‘is this person who looks, acts and obviously is Gandalf actually Gandalf?’ and ‘Elf macks on single mum’.

I’m very late, but I watched this over the past week. Really enjoyed it, apart from the Harfoot scenes, but I’ve never been a fan of Hobbits. The production values were insane too. It looks better than a lot of genre films these days, although that bar is dropped immensely in recent years.
Wish the internet hadn’t spoiled the twist for me, because I don’t think I would have figured it out on my own.
Now I need to rewatch the trilogy.

It's so long since I watched it I don't remember any twist...

There was a twist? Was that before or after I stopped watching it?
I didn't hate it tbf, so I should probably go back and finish it. It was just so disjointed that I never really got into the flow of it.

The first season was practically nothing but twists. That was one of my big issues with it, they decided that to keep people engaged they needed to Mystery Box everything in the show, which also lead to a bunch of lore changes that were shoehorned in just for that reason.

The twists also required you not to be intimately familiar with one of the most successful media franchises in human history. At this point, doing another series is just a sunk cost fallacy because they spend so much on swords and armour. It really should just be allowed to die with some dignity because it was absolute shite and probably unrescuable.

Spoilers ahead.
I think, having let the stink ferment in my brain since the final episode, of all the things that stank about it, the stankiest thing that remains with me now is the casting of Sauron, in that particular stinky form. It was just very lame.
That and the Mount Doom origin bs.

Its insane, really. Its proper 'Hans Chance Cubes' level shit if they think anyone on the planet cares about the origin story of mount doom. What back story does a fucking volcano need other than 'it was just there'.

It also has defined origin in the Histories of Middle Earth anyway, it was made by Melkor in the First Age, and the land was always known as Mordor.

There is such a huge amount of epic badassery in the history of LOTR that it’s a shame they made their own stuff up and of course it wasn’t great. They could have done Beren and Luthien followed by Earendil and the war of wrath and it would have been incredible; slaying dragons so large that they break mountains, travelling to heaven to plead for help from gods, carving magical gems from the crown of actual Satan - so many good bits.
But what we actually got was a lot of “mystery for mystery sake” and Elrond hitting a stone. Big missed opportunity.
