Maybe they were willing to work with MS, but not for MS?

I don't think it's weird at all, they want the independence so they don't fully become a CoD support studio which they were slowly turning into and they can still work on the stuff they're good at on their own terms.

Quite happy to see that, I would rather the studios that know what they are doing with cod keep working on it and these other studios be moved to other areas.

If this is true, it seems like an absolutely mental decision.
Hi-Fi Rush has only just released on the PS5 FFS. A critically acclaimed and well received game. Where is the logic?!!!

Oh fuck off with Tango. Hi-Fi Rush actually Xbox One's best exclusive til it wasn't. Is Arkane not doing Blade? Or is it in a different location?

Well, Mikami left. And as good as Hifi Rush may be (I own it, unplayed atm) I doubt it's particulalry easy owning and operating a Japanese company that may not have any strong design leadership.
Arkane Austin are also high output studio, what with both the Dishonored and Prey games behind them. Redfall fucked it, and again reports that all the experienced staff jumped ship before it launched, so maybe they don't see much vision for it's immediate future.
Ed: Arkane Lyon are dev'ing Blade.

There's some irony in an Xbox owned studio's last game being a PS5 port.

Wow. This was unexpected. So one bad game in the case of Arkane Austin and off you go then? And with Tango you actually make some great Xbox games and off you go? The executives at MS are really earning their inflated salaries here.
Also something that people have missed is that the press release also confirms that Redfall is basically dead seeing as the people who bought the edition with the season pass they are able to claim back the value of it. So that's that then.

Looks like the FTC was very right in one area How do you close a studio after Hi-Fi Rush?

I would imagine some studios at MS are looking really worried now. I'm looking at you 343 Industries.
This really feels like the inevitable sacrifice for the whole Activision purchase because I know many higher ups in MS were not happy about the whole thing.

IGN received an email that was sent to staff by Matt Booty, the head of Xbox Game Studios, which attributes the shutdowns to “reprioritization of titles and resources” to focus on “high-impact” games. The full email as published by IGN reads as follows:

Wow - definitely didn't see this coming.
Arkane Austin co-developed Dishonored, then did Prey and Redfall by themselves, right? It seems very harsh indeed to bin them off after one bad game, especially considering how excellent Dishonored and Prey were.
I wonder whether Harvey Smith will strike out on his own now, or whether he'll move over to Arkane Lyon.
As for Tango, that seems really harsh as well - I know Ghostwire wasn't universally adored, but it didn't strike me as a total disaster or anything, while the Evil Within games were both pretty good (and Hi-Fi Rush is supposed to be excellent).
Another shitty day in the AAA gaming industry, that's for sure.

Redfall's season pass owners will receive "make-good offers" to cover the cost of the upgrade, which I assume is a corporate bullshit term meaning "store credit."

Christ this is the same bullshit that Square Enix came out in response to the lower than expected sale for Rebirth and the cancellation of some in development games. They wanted to focus on the big hitters.
It's a really weird view because there are actually games out there, quite specific offbeat games, like Manor Born and moreso Helldivers 2, that are indie and AA games doing ridiculous business because they are offering something different. Not everyone wants a AAA open world, skill tree, xp giving, coloured loot game. People want a well thought out experience that offers something very specific, perhaps niche that isn't just a cookie cutter version of the last game in the series with better graphics. You could say that's why Starfield didn't do as well, it looks far better than Bethesda's previous output but it's fundamentally the same game we've been playing for god knows how long but with more loading screens. I don't think any big publisher in the industry has learnt this yet and is going down this route of massive games that take 6-7 years to develop and if they crash then the studio is gone. It's mind boggling.

Really gutted for Tango Gameworks as Hi-Fi Rush was fantastic and I really enjoyed Evil Within 2. I'm guessing Shinji Mikami's departure sealed their fate.

If Redfall is to blame then that feels extra harsh given that stank of being made as an edict from a committee on high compared to their actually good games, Prey and the Dishonoreds, seeming more creative/dev led.

I mean, we're talking about five people here so they'll probably just refund them. Sad, if not unexpected, day. The bulk of Arkane continues at least, which is good news. Tango I can't say I care one way or the other, beyond obviously being sad that a bunch of presumably good folk are looking for work. Hi Fi Rush was great, but I think it's the only one of their games I've ever played.

And those higher ups who made a single player immersive game studio do a watered down GaaS all get to keep their jobs.

I wonder if this is more a reaction to the sudden need to get more Fallout content out there then the performance of those individual developers.
Tango definitely seems a weird one, with HiFi Rush being so good. No idea how well it sold, but it came out of nowhere and seemed to get a lot of buzz around it.
Arkane Austin probably isn't that surprising. I love their games, but they have all underperformed and Redfall was a disaster.
2024 is proving to be a shit time for those working in the AAA gaming industry.
