Triangle Strategy is out! Get in!
For whatever reason I couldn't transfer my progress in the demo over, but eh, it's fine.
And I think I'll change the voices to Japanese, because the English ones sound ridiculous.

Sounded awkward so might still be possible, just not particularly straight forward
I just turned the voices down all the way to off

The demo and EG review have put me off Triangle Strategy somewhat. The various systems seemed interesting but there was just so much talking. And not interesting talking but just endless stiff exchanges of drawn-out courtesies that add nothing at all to the story or characterisation.

Unfortunately I deleted the demo, because it said "save files will not be deleted". Which was a lie, apparently. Still, it's fine. I'm happy to go through that content again, it'll probably be quicker now that I basically know what I'm doing.

Yeah, count me out for Triangle Strategy. Sounds bloated and tedious.

Fortunately it came out when it did, because I realised that I completely forgot about an eshop game voucher that I hadn't used. It literally had a few days left on the clock.
So... free game! Kind of!

Got the game and associated bits of tat now (yay) and it just asks you if you want to continue from a demo save at the title screen
I could watch people rambling on in this art style all day

Yeah, I love the visuals. If this didn't drop the same day as Gran Turismo, I'd be all the way in.

That's really weird. Oh well, too late now. I like it a lot so far! There's a lot of dialogue, but you can get through it pretty quickly if you want to.

I really like the character portraits too, though it would be better if some of them didn't say "I am probably going to be a villain later on in the game"

Yeah, I really wish they'd show up during conversations like in Tactics Ogre It's all popped off now There's some pretty interesting abilities in this like building ladders and laying traps - really good for enemies that like to go around for a back stab The talking is fine for me and with the voices off I'm going through it at reading pace anyway I'm up to chapter 7 now and just put the difficulty up to hard as it's been a bit of a breeze so far. Glad they let you change it without having to restart

I tried Hard for the tourney battle and noped out of it pretty quickly. I'm not really a novice at these kinds of games (*holds up Three Houses Maddening badge*) but I'm not 'ard enough to try the hardest difficulty from the beginning.
But it's cool that you can switch whenever you want. Maybe I'll change it later.

Also, am I weird, or is the story... actually pretty good?
Like it's not going to win awards, or any points for originality. But after all the "god this is so BORING, let's get to the BATTLES already" reviews, I'm surprised at how much I like it. I like the characters!

Weren't you a "can I skip the talking" guy a page ago? I honestly want it just for the story. I don't so much enjoy tactical combat as I put up with it to deal with the Shakespeare/historic parables.

I think a page ago I was more of a "I appreciate that you can skip the talking, if you are so inclined" kind of guy, rather than one who would do so himself. But fucked if I know, I barely remember what I did yesterday.
And I like stories in games too! But this does have "strategy" in the title, so I do want it to be a bit more than just an unexpectedly enjoyable visual novel.

I think I'm just an action RPG casual. Even it I consider RPGs my favorite genre. Zelda had action combat on NES. why would I want menus?

Zelda is a different beast to your menu-based JRPGs, it's basically an entirely different genre.
I don't think it has much to do with being "casual", really. You just like different things, and that's fine!

Haven't tried a level on hard yet but might as well give it as bash and I can drop it back down again so no worries
The story is fine so far, a bit more lighthearted in tone than FFT/TO, closer to a Fire Emblem I'd say. Haven't read any reviews but I haven't been bored yet. I like the sections where you go around chatting to people - there's always a couple of people in each where you have to choose your response and I just like that kind of thing in games, makes it feel a bit more personal, even it doesn't have a dramatic affect on anything (like in Persona). Also so far NPCs have only had one piece of dialogue so you can just talk to them once and bugger off. Really don't like it when games have NPCs you have to keep talking to for more dialogue as you then have to talk to everyone at least twice until they repeat themselves to make sure
I get the feeling there's going to be a ton of characters in this (there's a load of them on the reverse side of the case insert for the game) so I think it'll be a case of using the characters you enjoy most (like the look of) like FE. There's side stories for each one if you use them enough which is cool
Not sure I see the Zelda comparisons as Zelda combat doesn't allow for the complexity of turn based combat in JRPGs. Compare A Link to the Past to Final Fantasy 6, completely different genres really. TRPGs are one of my favourite types of game. I don't think this will rival Tactics Ogre (it won't) but that game is the gold standard for me, a masterpiece and one of my favourite games

So the last battle wasn't difficult on hard BUT I think I might have been a level above the recommended because I retried after a failed mission and you keep any XP/levels you gained. So if you want to avoid doing that, reload a save instead of retrying. Another thing was that I approached the mission a bit differently and reinforments that showed up last time didn't and made it much easier. Not sure if that's a bug or not Think this is great so far though. Avlora and Maxwell are the coolest their face off at the bridge was great . Really like that characters gain XP from using skills as well as attacking as it allows you to utilise support characters better. Anna and Hughette are MVPs so far - attacking twice/throw poison and blinding arrows are just so useful. Using a lot of abilities in general which is nice and the Quietus abilities are also a nice addition The second decision you have to make is much more weighty than the first and didn't seem like there was a right choice. The one I chose definitely comes with some consequences

Apparently there a decent length demo of the Kirby game out now. Gonna wait for the full game, rather than tease myself with the demo. I'm completely sold. It looks so charming and the 3D Wold comparisons have sold me. I really hope its as good as it looks.

I'm up to about chapter 5 in the triangles. It's fun!
The 'recommended level' things for the battles are a bit strange, as they're always higher than what you could conceivably be without grinding on mock battles. Also strange that you get to keep the xp you get in a battle, even if you fail. It's not bad or anything, just weird.
I like the characters, particularly how each one has a very specific role. Tbh I prefer that to your "everyone can potentially do everything" of FFT and whatnot. It's more tactically interesting to me.

Tbh I prefer that to your "everyone can potentially do everything" of FFT and whatnot. It's more tactically interesting to me. You do have to bump the level up a bit between missions but it's nothing excessive and those mock battles are easy peasy. I can see the opposite becoming an issue as I've started to unlock character story missions but I'm leaving them for now so I don't over level for the next story mission (same with the mock battle that became available)
Characters being unique is cool and it's interesting to see what their abilities will be as they aren't restricted to the usual roles
I love job systems though and the customisation they allow. It's a shame SE have just sat on FFT since the DS for some reason
I'm sticking with hard difficulty. The last mission I did was really tense. I love not being able to tell which way the battle will go until that moment when you realise the tide has turned in your favour

Finished the demo of Triangle Strategy yesterday and immediately ordered it. It's bringing back fond memories of FFTA (easily my longest played game on the GBA).

It's a good one. Had to use all my abilities, traps and environmental hazards to keep the enemy at bay on the last battle. Lost three units (there's no penalty for that) but managed to pull through in the end
Interestingly, although I've been pretty thorough talking to every NPC I've been able to, during the last decision section, there were response options that remained locked. I'm assuming you could only find the clues for them in the alternate paths I didn't take. You only ever need to convince at least one person so far though so I don't think you're ever locked into a particular choice

(More TS)
So the character side stories turned out to be just that, so no chance of over leveling there, but...
...that means I had to repeat the last mock battle three times to get everyone up to the recommended level for the next story mission. They seem to want you to grind out the mock battles to get the money and materials you need to upgrade characters. My biggest gripe with this is that each mock battle is fixed so you're doing the exact same one each time you repeat it, and they're much easier than the story missions. The character upgrades aren't that interesting (+1 to stats, +10 HP, etc) so the mock battles and upgrades seem to exist to justify each other and don't really add anything to the game beyond padding
