The shitty thing is that it doesn't look as if we're getting a Switch Pro/2/whatever any time soon Nintendo games would be amazing with HDR and some more power.

I'm also of the view that that doesn't bother me. As long as the art is good and the games play well, I'm happy enough

Crikey, there are so many games coming up for the Switch that I want to get. Already got a few preordered and that last Direct added a load more. Nintendo really weren't kidding when they said it's still at the midpoint of it's lifecycle

I don't feel much need for anything too wild and I don't think Nintendo need to be chasing 4k or ray tracing. However, the Switch is just a bit too underpowered. I feel that the sweet spot to target should be 1080p at 60fps (frame rate being more important and scaling being fine if required). Switch is a little shy of that in most instances, even with quite a few first party games. To hear that it is only mid-cycle is a little disappointing. However, there is bound to be overlap between the Switch and whatever comes next. A new console out in 2023-24 has always seemed quite feasible to me, dispite the Pro/2 rumours. That would still give the Switch support for a couple years after the release to still accurately say it is currently the midpoint of its life.

I'd be kinda pissed off if they announced a new console, since I've only had a switch for about a year.

Thing with power is though, if they release a more poweful model, but its still behind the other consoles, you can bet we will still see sub-par frame rates and resolutions for certain ports. Some of those ports can be better optimised, but its all time and budget restricted.
What we need it more specialised ports with a stronger consideration of the platform when they're in early development. The Switch can still pump out some lovely looking games if it is the target console for said games.

Kin el, about to finish Danganronpa 2 and I'm torn as to the next game to start.
Was gonna do Mario Kart etc until Triangle Strategy comes out, but after they announced Xenoblade Chronicles 3 it makes me think now is the best time to play 2, which I've had since launch but never properly played.
Loved Octopath Traveller which makes me think I should wait but then I could start Xenoblade this weekend, just zero chance I will finish it anywhere close to Triangle Strategy release.
First world problems I know.

Yep, being able to handle 1080p/60fps with HDR for 1st party games would be realistic and great. With ports there will always be issues but maybe if the next one does have DLSS It'll help bridge the gap a bit. I tried the last Hyrule Warriors demo and it was a mess in terms of performance, last switch game I played was Paper Mario and it was just begging for HDR.

Breath of the Wild struggles quite a bit but not to the point where it affected my enjoyment of it. That was another aspect of Age of Calamity I thought emulated BotW quite well

Not in my experience. There were frame drops all over the place. Lightning especially killed it

If my wallet doesn't strangle me in my sleep this will be a very strong year indeed... Your wallet?!? I think you meant to say my dad's wallet!!!
I am not made of money you know Oh, so you're offering to pay for all of that then? 😛 I just figured I'd be footing the bill for at least a couple of those myself, didn't want to assume anything... You know what they say about doing that, after all 😉

The shitty thing is that it doesn't look as if we're getting a Switch Pro/2/whatever any time soon Nintendo games would be amazing with HDR and some more power. I guess with the chip shortages it’s probably delayed any forthcoming release by at least a year. I thought maybe we hear something this year for a late 2022 early ‘23 release but it it does seem Nintendo are holding position for now. To be honest it doesn’t bother me too much. A majority of games look And run great (Mario Oydessy, Luigi mansion etc), though it does seem like we are getting a few hiccups here and there now (hyrule warriors). As Dave says, if ports are optimised there is some lovely stuff on there, it can play Witcher 3 for starters! Just feels, maybe understandably with the current climate that we been getting more ‘acceptable’ than ‘care’ but, yeah covid happened. I think it maybe one those where it is mostly done and waiting to go into production, and they’re just waiting patiencely on a few factors (Botw2?) to hit the let’s go button.

Well, your pocket money comes technically mostly out of my pocket, so...
As for "footing the bill", you can start by paying for Arceous as soon as your Uni exams are over

On the Switch 2 topic, so far I haven't had any major issues with... anything, really (fingers crossed Legends Arceus doesn't change that). I've only had some noticeable framedrops in the various Zelda/FE Warriors games when I pushed it too much (we're talking Age of Calamity, "full screen of enemies, dozens of enemies' worth of dropped items plus me as Link doing two-handed screen clearing moves with drop rate boosts to farm said drops, all at once" levels of "too much" here, so not exactly regular gameplay). And that's whether I'm playing docked or handheld mode, so not a case of docked helping things... Even in Lost Woods I don't recall it chugging, although in fairness it's been a while.
That being said, I am worried that we'll be seeing more and worse problems soon, Xenoblade 3 looked dangerously massive in the trailer and BotW 2 may or may not surpass even that (which is why I have a hunch it'll be the system seller for Switch 2)
Still, as long as the new Switch is backwards compatible I'm pretty ok with the prospect, after 5 years we've definitely gotten our money's worth out of the original model in the household... Hell, BotW alone was a good 200-250 hours total between Dad and myself 😄

I'm guessing you got more for your money out of it than your dad did You'd be surprised, actually... My total playtime is shown as more than his, but I've been randomly popping it in and just faffing about for a few minutes a lot more than he does, plus he never bothered with the Master Sword trials... I'd say our initial all-shrine + Champions' Ballad playthroughs ended up at around the same playtime

I haven't been following any news. I don't supposed BotW2 is going to have co-op? I'm at the stage in family life where ALL games need co-op.

Maybe I'm just old enough to remember how badly first generation 3D games were... to be acceptable to play a few frame drops here and there. It doesn't really bother me.
Oh god the immersion has gone because it doesn't have 60fps HDR+QTBF

It's doubtful that it will have true co-op (although I'm not ruling anything out at this point, especially if they actually make Zelda playable this time) but with a game like this, even each person playing in a separate file and telling each other stuff, like showing beautiful views, dropping hints about puzzles or secrets, strategizing for bosses together or just sharing random fun things they found is quite a blast in and of itself, I think

It's just that they were on the CD-i and also absolute shite, so no one talks about them 😄 Not that the other Zelda CD-i game was much better, these three are pretty much the Star Wars Holiday Special of LoZ...

Apparently there is a character that looks like Zelda that appears to be controllable in the gameplay trailer (honestly, I couldn't tell myself and just assumed it was Link all the way through). The obvious assumption is that you will switch to controlling her at certain points, but some have hoped it could be hinting at a co-op game. I don't think it is hugely likely though.

I'd be kinda pissed off if they announced a new console, since I've only had a switch for about a year. I've had mine for five years. It's time. It's past time. I've only recently started playing it as a handheld foremost because I just don't like how low quality the games look on a TV. It was underpowered when it launched halfway through the PS4 and XB1's life cycle, now things look kind of abysmal to me if I'm honest. Art style helps, but it doesn't alleviate the short comings. Monolith and their Xenoblade teams for example suffer heavily from the lack of hardware grunt. The art style's nice, but the low resolutions, inconsistent framerate and low quality textures hurt the experience overall. I prefer Nintendo's first party output BY FAR above the rest, but it's consistently the last console I use because it's so far behind the others, only exponentially so since the launch of the PS5 and Series X.

How is XCom 2 on the Switch? Reviews suggest performance issues that interfere with enjoyment, but it's only £3.99 in the sale 🤔

Last console because of graphics? I mean in terms of gameplay it should be the first because Nintendo are way ahead in innovation imo. And you only have to look at Horizon and BotW that came out at the same time, I know which one I'd rather be playing.

Underpowered on release is harsh, a hybrid couldn't have realistically been much more powerful back then. The crappy textures do stand out nowadays, I agree.

Yeah, and I've still not completed Horizon to be honest, but five years later, we have Horizon II dropping alongside Pokemon Legends Arceus, and if you put them side by side, it's pretty jarring.
Usually with consoles, games look nice at launch but they really impress a few years down the line when developers get a better handle of the hardware and development tools, but Nintendo hasn't had that curve. The Switch was maxed out at launch and visuals have been a flat line since BotW.
again, I agree Nintendo's studios are incomparable. But even they're being hindered by the low tech.
I'd like something at least Series S level from Nintendo. PS4 Pro level visuals but with the CPU power to hit 60fps consistently. But with how big a success the Switch has been, I think they've got a winning formula and they'll stick to the portable/console hybrid, in which case they're kind of bottlenecked by Nvidia's Tegra development.

I'm guessing you got more for your money out of it than your dad did Considering he did not pay for either the console or the game(s), he certainly got waaay more out of it than me
Also, the only switch games I've played extensively are Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, even though I've purchased many more than that; still have Link's Awakening, Luigi's Mansion and Metroid Dread wrapped, ffs!
