It's only been about a month since I hopped onto this cultural side salad. It is filling and enhancing some great time sinks like the odd day a fortnight I have to be in the office effectively alone or just walking to the shops/ on the bus etc.
Love the Ancaster/Gamble menu one (ad creep is annoying though). I've stumbled upon 'You're Wrong About' which is US centric but usually really interesting. The Adam Buxton one is ok. A few more I've enjoyed to lesser or greater extents.
I'm using a pre-installed app but it's search is shit.
So any recommendations? On any topic... Or a good app to use?

Cane and Rinse is my favourite gaming podcast. Each episode is a deep dive discussion on a particular game.
Comedy wise there's the Richard Herring Leicester Square Theatre podcast, quality varies dependent on his guest but there's some great ones in the archives.

Cane and Rinse is brilliant. Filthy Casuals is also a really enjoyable video game podcast though more focused on comedy/bantz. This Game Changed My Life is great too, even my wife who isn't interested in games at all liked it.
Hardcore History is great, especially the deep dive on WW1, though most episodes are paywalled. You're Wrong About is pretty good if you can tolerate the wokeness (I like to balance it out with a bit of Sam Harris's Making Sense). Damn Interesting and This Is Actually Happening can be really good at times, the former is just interesting stories but has really good production, the latter is random people just talking about crazy shit that's happened to them.
Hearing good things about the Always Sunny podcast, but haven't checked it out yet.

Things I listen to in English atm:
Gaming (and occasionally other stuff) podcast with a bunch of UK names that are probably familiar if you've read Eurogamer, RPS or UK PC Gamer over the years. Brendan Caldwell uses games as a jumping off point to discuss various subjects. Usually a games journo guest host and an interview segment with an academic expert. Another podcast that uses games to talk about real world subjects. The quality varies enormously but some episodes are very good.
Exactly what the title says. Science and History. The Big British Castle has loads of other good shows in podcast format, this just happens to be the one I'm going through now.
A very thorough Egyptology podcast.
Ads really annoy me. Not a problem with BBC ones and most of the above that don't have them at all, but I usually download podcasts that use ads so I can easily skip past them, both on PC and on my phone.

Crate & Crowbar, though the pandemic has led to them experimenting with the format and so a few things are still shaking themselves out. The best ones were always the 4 hour ones where they ended up drunk and arguing about what was the opposite of a fox in the shard. Less of those recently.
Does anyone know any podcasts that introduce new music? More rock, indie, less hip-hop, but a good mix would be best.

My podcast listening time is quite limited, as I like to be able to concentrate which means I usually only listen when walking or nodding off to sleep. So I really only listen to 4 or 5 regularly: Adrift - a comedy pod about social awkwardness and how those less blessed with social skills cope on a daily basis. Whilst I am probably not a full Drifter, I share enough traits to relate. Presented by 2 ex-Absolute Radio DJs and it's the relationship that makes it really. Some of the listener stories are fantastic. Luke and Pete Show - Chaps from the Football Ramble shooting the breeze about anything and everything. I like it a lot, mostly due to the weird facts or stories that crop up. Arseblog and Handbrake Off - Arsenal podcasts that I won't bore anyone else with. Shagged, Married, Annoyed - Comedian Chris Ramsey and his wife do domestic battle. It's funny, rude and very candid. I have started to go off it a bit tbh, the success has led to sell out arena tours and they are clearly doing very well out of it (fair play). But some of their recent episodes have come across a bit smug as a result. Still worth a listen from the start though.

I’ve switched mainly to audiobooks and music instead of podcasts recently but recommendations anyway:
The best movies never made. Exactly what it sounds like, they get some of the people involved in attempting to get the film made, loads about unmade Star Trek, most recent one about Dune.
The problem with Jon Stewart. It’s very American centric but it’s Jon Stewart doing worthy subjects with actual experts.
Rob Beckett and Josh widdicome parenting hell. I’m not the biggest fans of these two on TV but they’re good here.

I have found during the last two years there are just so many comedians interviewing and being interviewed shows that I’ve given up an just about anything like that now. I get why they did it but I wish a few had been a bit more creative in who they have on instead of the same group of mates on all of them.

The Weekly Planet is my fave. Movies, comic books, games. Though mostly movies, and mostly comic book movies. Two Aussies which are often hilarious.
See also their youtube channel Mr Sunday Movies, and their great series Caravan of Garbage (which is also on their podcast channel).

Ah yes. Only listened to one episode tbh, need to do E2. Trouble is, my wife keeps falling asleep halfway through episodes of Succession so it's difficult to keep track of what was in each episode

If podcast dramas are your thing (I don't mean the IRL kind of 'drama') and you have any interest at all HP Lovecraft and Cthulhu mythos then I very highly recommend The Lovecraft Investigations on BBC Sounds.
Brilliant production, acting and writing and imo the best dramatisation of HP Lovecraft in any format.
3 seasons, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, The Whisperer in Darkness and The Shadow Over Innsmouth. Start with the first of those as the characters and story arcs interlink.

Knew I should avoid looking at this thread, as I'll just add to my podcast backlog. Have to get the dogs up to 15 miles a day....
BBC Sounds has got some good stuff on it. Enjoying Sideways at the moment - "Matthew Syed explores ideas that shape our lives, making us see the world differently." It's better than it sounds....
Doomsday Watch with Arthur Snell - geopolitical stuff, about the various big issues eg Chinese, Russian threats etc.
I'm sure you all subscribe to the Glasgow Motorway Archive podcast already, so you know how unmissable their tales about the M8/M74/M77 etc development are!

Gaming - Fire escape cast. Great as long as you like Dan Rykert (I know he has his detractors from Bombcast/Beastcast days). Quite long too (3 hours sometimes), which is a plus.
General chat - The Unmade Podcast. Very in-jokey, but worth listening enough so you're familiar with the banter, or just listening from the start. Has Brady Haran from Hello Internet and dozens of sciency YouTube channels. Brad and Will made a tech pod - I frequently can't follow what they're talking about but it's great to have on in the background while doing something else.
Music - nothing for new recommendations, but I'm into 90s/2000s breakbeat and the Stanton Warriors Stanton Sessions are brilliant. Also Krsfty Kuts - A Golden Era.

I still really enjoy the BitSocket podcast - Scott and Joe have a great rapport and are frequently hilarious. Tokyo Joe remains a highlight.
I listened to a lot of 2 Good Boys during lockdown too and thought it was very good. Generally very funny and I found a lot of it very relatable.
The Electronic Wireless Show from RPS is a decent listen too, but I think it's easy to bounce off.
Someone else mentioned Hey Lesson above and I'd also recommend that. Informative and funny.

Got a lot of new podcasts downloaded to check out tomorrow as I potter round the office and I thank you all for that.
I'd already tried the Athletico Mince and the always sunny ones previously. The Mortimer one is fine (the bloke is a hero) but I don't think it's his finest work and his co-host is a bit try hard. The Sunny one is also fine (and new so they are finding their feet still) but it's not an episode by episode breakdown as it's been structured. It's a group of funny guys reminiscing in general. Don't have a problem with that, but where is Sweet Dee?
The history casts interest me greatly. The Cane and Rinse one has had a few shouts so I'm up for that. Firecrotch and Normcore might be essential too.

Dan Snow History Hit is good value. So many but just pull the ones on topics that interest you. Also ‘We didn’t start the fire’ history and shit innit
However I’ve kind of reached podcast overload. Couldn’t keep up with everything so just reverted back to football weekly really.

I got the amount of podcasts on my phone down under 2Gb yesterday! Win!
Since the pandemic I've been cycling to work instead of taking the train, which cut down on listening time a lot. Then I got into audiobooks which meant the phone backlogged *a lot* of podcasts. It was 3.5Gb at one point, so I've had to put the audiobooks on hold to burn through a few.
I still can't find any decent music podcasts.

I still can't find any decent music podcasts. Aren't there any good music programs on the BBC? 6 Music used to be pretty good about playing new music, but I haven't kept up at all. It seems like most of their shows are available as podcasts at least for a while, so worth having a look at least.
I think the problem with having a music podcast is that you might run into a lot of royalty issues if you want to actually play music. A big established radio station can probably accomodate for it as they have a budget and people whose job it is to deal with that stuff. Someone doing the standard podcast thing of throwing everything up on every podcast portal and leaving it up forever could potentially be hit with ever bigger royalty bills, and a massive amount of work in just making sure everything they do is and remains legal.

A couple of music ones I've enjoyed:
Music Life (BBC Sounds), 4 musicians invited together to talk about the creative process around a theme topic. Many of the people particularly recently are who? never heard of you, but there are some interesting names in there if you scroll through (the one with Jason Williamson, Iggy Pop and Anna Calvi is great. Also the one with Jon Hopkins)
The Quietus Radio podcast used to be really good but hardly any new content on there in the last few years. All the old shows are still there and worth a listen though, John Doran is a great interviewer.

Spotify have quite a few music podcasts where they’ve got actual songs amongst the talking, it’s the only good thing about their podcast service.
