Is he famous? I've only ever seen his name here, but people here talk as if he's universally known. Though I do tend to be out of touch with any UK music post 2006. You mean you don’t know his hits, “I was in the same school year as Prince William at Eton”, “That time I was the warm-up act for the London Olympic Opening Ceremony” or “Actually, I think you’ll find the BNP are very left wing” ?

He must be seriously forgettable if I can remember Elbow playing at the opening ceremony and not him.

I've got a mate who (along with his wife) loves Frank Turner - they will go and see him multiple times on each tour.
And I just don't get it.
Normally he has a great taste in music, we've been to lots of gigs and a festival together, across a range of genres and nothing else he has ever recommended has been so utterly shit.

After glancing at a picture in the story yesterday I’d just assumed he was the guy from that annoying banjo band whose name escapes me right now. But upon closer inspection he’s not and Google has revealed I have absolutely no idea who he is. Not even a sudden “oh he did that”.

I did like Frank Turners first EP, mainly because Thatcher Fucked The Kids was a fun ditty, and saw him play a 1 man show at the Rebellion punk festival in Blackpool (though it might have still been the Wasted festival back then) but his music went downhill *very* quickly after that.
I don't really care about his background, the main issue I have is that his music is incredibly bland.

Look up "inexplicably successful" in a dictionary and there they are, looking up at you.

Eh I quite enjoy Turner's music, though I fully accept the man is a twat and a lot of his music is "edgy music" for people who think beige is a nice colour. I don't know much about him other than his toons but I did hear he described himself as a libertarian at one point, which is a bit of a red flag innit.
My default is to assume that everybody in the entertainment industry who has done well enough to make a living out if it is a twat.

My thing with Frank Turner was I keep confusing him with Frank Carter (of Gallows, Rattlesnakes and Sex Pistols), so I would also be a bit perplexed when I would read stuff about him and realise it wasn't the guy I was thinking of. That's as far as my knowledge of him goes.

Just ran through his "top songs". I'd heard of Recovery but no others. They all sound the same though, sure the chap above could do a very effective summary of his playing and singing style.

Tbf, most artists songs sound pretty similar. See the previous discussion of Foo Fighters.

To be fair to your friend (and Frank) I’ve never seen Frank have a bad gig. Because of having mutual friends who booked all his early north east gigs I’ve seen him play everything from house shows, through clubs, theatres and the arena and while the records haven’t always done it for me, and I’ve totally lost touch completely over the last few, the live show is always very good and very high energy.

Yeah I’m just reading the story on BBC now. It’s horrific but all too common that anyone with money and influence could take what they want. And they never seem to see justice in their lifetime.
Sadly, I doubt Trump will buck the trend.

I'll dare say it's probably a disturbingly high figure. Takes a certain narcissistic personality to attain that level of wealth (speaking from my humble and fuck all informed position of never going to have that kind of wealth) and I reckon that all it does is enable them to exert that kind of control and influence. It's the ultimate end game for a lot of them, albeit a subconscious one. It's fucking nuts when you think about it. All that money and privilege in the world, and that's what you do with it. Because that's the thing that's broken inside you and suddenly the restraints are off. There are people out there with these thoughts that don't act on them not for any moral reasons, but for recrimination. So what happens when you think you're above that...

It's such an obvious ploy to get back on the public's good side. You can almost imagine the meeting with his agent word for word. "This will endear you to them Phil, you'll look all unkempt and sad and lonely and you can give lots of monologues to the camera about how the experience is giving you time to reflect."
Throw in a couple of dramatic moments where he runs out of food for 20 minutes or shits himself and bingo, he's big in the backtime.

Speaking of comebacks did anyone else see John Barrowman on Celebrity SAS Who Dares Wins?
I know he’s an actor so maybe it was put on but he seemed genuinely broken about the nob waving stuff. I think the fact he was so openly and sadly talking about waggling it at people and getting his balls out does make it sound like it genuinely was a joke and he’s truly crushed by the idea anyone would think he’s a sex pervert because of it. Its certainly the most upset I’ve seen anyone in this kind of position being.
