Visually 2049 is superior but the script is several levels below the original. Not a single line comes anywhere close to things like ‘if only you could see what I’ve seen with your eyes’ or ‘tears in the rain’. I’m not sure there’s a single quotable in the whole thing. Generally it’s nowhere near as well written with less interesting characters and a worse structure. But yeah, it’s very pretty.

But why did Deckard have to look like he came off the set of an M&S advert?

That’s maybe a little unfair. There’s a lot of subtle stuff about robot sentience and ownership/property laced throughout the 2049 script - this is a film where almost everybody is synthetic and jockeying for position amongst themselves to either have their rights recognised, or to overstep and destroy their human masters. ‘Thank Wallace for your time’ is a great example of that.

Whilst 2049 looks and sounds absolutely gorgeous, I struggle to engage with it as a film for some reason. I find Gosling too bland, Ford too underwritten, Leto too indulgent and everyone else blends into the (very pretty) background bar one: I actually think the standout is probably de Armas. She seems to be the emotional core that lacks everywhere else. For a film about synthetic life, it feels too synthetic.

I mean the original is a very high bar. I’m not necessarily saying it’s badly written. The same goes for the visuals in the original which are still as good as anything else, so it’s high praise to say the sequel surpassed it.

Kenneth Branagh's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (4k Blu-Ray) - 2/5The disk was on sale and I was drunk and sad and I kinda regret buying it but sort of don't. It's produced by Francis Ford Coppola who was for some reason was really going all in on massively overblown gothic blockbusters. It's nowhere near the level of Dracula and everyone agrees it's Branagh's fault. Technically he tries to match Coppola but doesnt have the means or the talent, it's nowhere near as much fun and the pacing is pretty poor. It looks nice enough but nothing really works. God knows why De Niro wanted any part of this, I think only Nic Cage could have done anything with the role. Bonus 0.5 rating for Branagh's abs. TBH, I really love this movie (as well as Coppola's Dracula), if only for De Niro's quote:
I think it's quite bad, but I do like it a lot. I didnt know it was written by Frank Darabont, who says Branagh went way off piste.

One thing I'll always love about 2049 is that it was the first time in an age I was caught by surprise of the "twist" (if you can even call it that). It absolutely nailed that part and felt completely earned.

I think it's well written, but it has a more toned down style compared to the more dramatic noir style of the original. The original is definitely more quotable, and I'd say more beautiful. But the new one almost matches it for beauty and is gorgeous.
Denis' style is much more toned down and 'clean', whereas scott's more amped up and noir.

I wouldn't even say 2049 is visually superior overall, it has some standout sequences and I was blown away by it in the cinema all the same. The opening flight over LA and the entrance to Vegas are astonishing. I didn't actually like the film very much at the time. As you say, it's pretty poorly paced and the story is completely unnecessary, I especially felt it just didn't need to have Deckard in it at all, let alone 'Rachel'. I think it might be Villeneuve's worst film but I have enjoyed it a lot more on re-watch and rate it pretty highly. I'll probably try and watch it again this weekend.

There's no way it's worse than Dune or Sicario.

Villeneuve's worst film is Prisoners, not bad but just kind of bland.

Its main problem is that its central mystery isn't very interesting and the payoff isn't very satisfying. Its not a bad movie by any means, I just didn't ever really care about anything that happens which is why I've only watched it once at home and that was more to check I was still lukewarm on it.

I think OG Bladerunner benefits from being an 80s film. It’s still got all the trappings of an auteur piece, but with the structure, pace and quotables that makes action films from that time really fun.
2049 just takes itself a little too seriously in comparison but I do love it. But yeah, it’s not as enjoyable and I have to admit it’s getting slightly more boring with each watch.

I liked Prisoners. 2049 being his worst is probably too much of a hot take, but it's a way behind Dune and Sicario for me.

I think it is visually more impressive than the original, and that's partly due to the master Roger Deakins.

Of his Hollywood films I think Enemy is the least accomplished. It’s still really intriguing and atmospheric but it’s very “early career”. I think Sicario might be his best, or my personal favourite anyway.

I'm guessing that's for Sicario.
Saw it at the cinema on release and I just don't see what others see in that film.
Save for the ending scene and the better than usual Deakins masterclass it felt completely dull and empty. The characters have nothing to them - Del Toro's character only shows something right at the end, Blunt seems like she's there to be the audiences eyes only and I can't remember a single thing about Brolin's character or motivation.
I actually think it's his worst film and I've seen them all (bar August 32nd). Very aware I'm in the minority on this one.

I must admit I've always found the original Blade Runner a bit overrated. It's certainly a very good film, but it isn't one I've ever loved. Just never really connected with it.
I do love 2049 though.

I've both found myself loving 2049 and being utterly bored. It really depends on my mood.
If I'm in the right mood I think it's a wonderful atmosphere that I get lost in. Other times I've just gotten bored.
And I've gone back and forth on it over the years and watches.
Of all his films Sicario is the one I've enjoyed most consistently.

The traffic jam sequence in Sicario is a masterpiece.

As heavy as the subject matter is Incendies is probably my favourite film of his.

The worst thing about 2049 is that Jared Leto is in it.

I know it's fun to dunk on Jared Leto but I thought his performance in 2049 was fine. Not sure why he gets a ton of hate for his acting, always seemed passable to me.

Sicario, Prisoners, Arrival, Dune, 2049 are all amongst my favourite films. Not sure why I’ve never watched Enemy.

To be honest, in a vacuum his performance in that was fine, but it's more my dislike of him bleeding in from elsewhere. It's perhaps unfair but unavoidable for me.
