The initial media reviews when it released were overwhelmingly negative as they also thought it was glorifying Nazi fascism. It was one of the reasons it bombed, but then found a cult following later. This is a bit of a myth actually, most critics got that it was satire, they just didn't feel it was especially successful. It's hard to find any contemporary reviews which don't acknowledge the satire, especially given that it's a verhoeven movie.
The recent takes relating to this appear to be more along the lines of "I recognised that it was satire but I was still taken in by it a bit so therefore it's bad satire" along with othe garbage takes. People arguing stuff like "it's bad satire because they made all the soldiers in it really good looking" and other dumb shit.
Itās not really a myth. The WaPo ran an editorial literally accusing Verhoeven of being a neo-Nazi.

Escape from NY 7/10
One of those films that if Iād seen it closer to the time then Iād have enjoyed it more. Itās got that 80s futuristic style that so many of that era have in common.

Rotting in the Sun (mubi) - 7/10
What starts off as a very strange, dreamlike, drug-addled solo trip for some fun in Mexico, unexpectedly swerves later and turns into something more like Aldi Knives Out. It's quite funny and surprisingly tense watching it unfold.

Bones and All
This was good. I didnāt know much about it and thatās probably the best way to go into it, but similar sort of territory to Let the Right One In but also quite different tonally. If you like horror thatās a bit more thoughtful and human thisāll work for you. Worth it alone for the opening sequence which is exceptional.
8/10

That passed me by too, but sounds very intriguing. On Prime by the looks of it, so it's on the list, thanks Kal.

Leave the World Behind - I expected to be terrified, I was bored instead. Too much pointless bickering, too few tense moments. Also, CGI deer does not a thriller movie make. Movie too long, plus I never found Julia Roberts attractive. 5/10 /sorry for terrible opinion

I mean, it's not a horror and never pretended to be. But yes, let's include our subjective opinions on the attractiveness of the cast in our reviews. That can only end well.
Poor Barry Keoghan has only just finished drying his eyes, for fuck's sake.

The Void* - Cultists lay siege to a hospital and turn people into tentacle monsters. A low budget, lovecraftian cosmic horror movie that constantly butts up against its very low budget but its inventive, gruesome 'fun' nonetheless. If you're a Chtulhu guy, give it a whirl.
7/10

Legendary Weapons of China (Mubi)
So this is about "spiritual boxers" who think they can fight against Western guns by making themselves bulletproof through magic. One of their leaders defects, and assassins are sent after him.
This is a weird one. There's a lot of magical stuff in it, like one guy who fights with voodoo dolls, and a whole subplot about a guy who pretends to have magic powers but it's all an elaborate stage play.
I've nfi what's going on in the plot, really. There are legendary weapons for some reason, and it feels like the movie is an excuse to show them off.
Anyway, the good news is that there's 18 of these things. And you better believe they all get used in elaborate duels and fight sequences. Especially towards the end, where there's one fight scene that I swear goes for almost 10 minutes.
It's Shaw Brothers, you watch it for the fights, and the fights are brilliant.
8/10

Oh, and also, if you can get a cheap Mubi subscription, they have at least a dozen Shaw Brothers things on there. Most of them ones I haven't seen before! Highly recommended for martial arts-likers.

The Killer on Netflix, pretty good hitman film, several steps of the quality ladder above your typical Statham vehicle, Fassbender great in it. No disrespect to the Jase, just a different kind of hitman flick.

Wicked Little Letters - on a cinema screen, a bit early
The mostly true story of a woman receiving very rude and vicious poison pen letters in Littlehampton in 1920. Edith (Olivia Colman) is a prim and proper devout Christian who gets them while her very much not prim and proper Irish neighbour Rose (Jesse Buckley) is the prime suspect.
It's a decent comedy with a fair amount of drama that revolves around just what is actually going on and the place of women in twenties England. A lot of the laughs come from the straight laced characters reading and responding to the rude letters that seem like something from Viz.
I certainly wouldn't be calling it "the British comedy of the year" as one quote says on the poster as it would mean this is a really weak year for British comedy at the cinema.
Worth a watch but don't rush to the cinema, I'd almost suggest that it's something for a wet Sunday afternoon on the telly but there's no fucking way it could be shown in the afternoon with the language that's used. It's a film with colour blind casting that comes off a little odd given this is based on true events, not sure that entirely works.

Yeah, it gives the impression of something that was filmed as budget allowed so is a bit disjointed especially in the final third but you can't fault its moxy

A proper 7/10 film, that has some absolutely amazing stuff in it and would've been an absolute classic if it had just managed to stick the landing a bit better.

Jules (torrent)
Ben Kingsley getting old and with a bit of dementia, has an alien crash into his back garden. Of course, nobody believes him in this heartwarming film about getting old, loneliness and not assuming things.
A really good watch for when you want something funny but heartfelt, but donāt watch it in a dusty room.
