What's the one with the dangly robot balls? Didn't think it could get lower than that until the paedo card.

The Iron Claw - 8/10 I didn't know the story behind it at all, so that was a fairly wild ride! A great exploration of toxic masculinity. Efron is almost unrecognisable at first, and I guess that explains why Carmy was suddenly so bulked up in S2 of the Bear. Cracking performances all around. Just came out of this, great film, great performances, really really enjoyed this.

More to the point, are you really going to carry on with the rest of the series now? This has to be some kind of masochism thing... Of course. I’m hoping for great things with Marky Mark getting involved. As long as I don’t have Turtorro’s ass in my screen again then I’m expecting at least a 2/10.

Didn't think it could get lower than that until the paedo card. 2 That bit was awful but at the same time, for all the awful choices and terrible script and acting, the whole thing is trying to do something and, on a technical level, that’s not a complete failure. That might be trying to overload my eyes and constantly perve on all the girls but it goes for it and the action shots are a lot better than a lot of recent films. I’m going to watch Escape From New York then carry on with this fun marathon.

Clerks (dvd)
Of all my recent big Gen X movies watches and rewatches this is easily the one I have the most nostalgia for. But even so, I think it probably strikes the best balance between the ambient parade of weirdos Slacker was and more conventional relationship dramas like Singles.
Plenty of flaws of course. Arguably the only two people who can act overact massively, everyone else is either just being themselves or clearly reading from cue cards just out of shot. Some of the plot beats make no real sense. There is some dated/now problematic language.
But there’s so much heart in it and scrappy diy punkish things are entirely my bag in general, so for me its still relatable, holds up and is a film I can rewatch with ease regularly.
A very big film for me and my friends as teens and the one who introduced it to us all dying unexpectedly of a heart attack just over a year ago made Clerks 3 an absolutely crushing experience. I still think the second is rubbish though.

simple probably my favourite 90s film. I don't care that the script is clunky, the acting pretty terrible. It's got heart amd love that shines through. And just so eminently quoteable.

The making of Clerks is just as fascinating. I actually quite enjoy 2 but 3 was reeeeeaaally terrible up until it did emotional things.

The Beekeeper 2/10 Lowlights include. Statham and Irons drift in and out of an American accents when the mood takes them while phoning it in. Dweebiest baddy ever. A hard drinking woman FBI agent who is borderline schizophrenic making illogical decision after decision, and atypical call centers compared to the ones you see on YT vids, the ones they are taking down look like they cost more to run than they scam.
Ummm, the fight scenes are ok
Truly awful

Monuments Men 7.5/10 (iplayer)
War film about a group of misfits sent to retrieve stolen art from the Nazis in the latter stages of WW2. It’s a bit uneven and maudlin/plods in parts but it also has some really good action and great speeches by Cloioney’s character which lifts the whole thing. I very much enjoyed it and the central message about the rape of art and humanity’s need to protect it is still relevant.

The Mothman Prophecies* - Can't believe this is 20 odd years old now. As such, it looks a bit shonky, a few of the camera angles and edits they use to try and make it look creepy look a bit student film now but I do still kinda dig it. Im big into all this shit anyway so I'm very familiar with the IRL story, but I do still really dig it. Its pretty eerie and does a really good job of confirming that we aren't allowed to know what's going on. Not the best actual movie in the world but it is interesting.
I had forgotten this but it also has an absolute banger from Low on the end credits.
6/10

advent children complete, haven’t seen this in decades and never watched the complete version which is probably a bit better than the original from what I recall. A lot of it looks pretty ropey now, but the story is surprisingly better than I remember. The fight scenes still shine, which is all that really matters

I really want to re-watch The Rock to see if it's as good as I remember. Because I have no faith remaining that Bay can make a decent movie, so I don't see how it could be. But in that case I don't want to tarnish the memory.

I saw Armageddon once in about 98/99. It was never good. It just threw money at Affleck, Willis and Aerosmith.

It was my birthday and I made everyone watch the following films:
Kenneth Branagh's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (4k Blu-Ray) - 2/5
The disk was on sale and I was drunk and sad and I kinda regret buying it but sort of don't.
It's produced by Francis Ford Coppola who was for some reason was really going all in on massively overblown gothic blockbusters. It's nowhere near the level of Dracula and everyone agrees it's Branagh's fault. Technically he tries to match Coppola but doesnt have the means or the talent, it's nowhere near as much fun and the pacing is pretty poor. It looks nice enough but nothing really works. God knows why De Niro wanted any part of this, I think only Nic Cage could have done anything with the role. Bonus 0.5 rating for Branagh's abs.
The Devil's Advocate (DVD, 50p) - 2.5/5
The Exorcist X John Grisham starring Al Pacino as Satan who hires Keanu Reeves to defend Donald Trump on a triple homicide charge. Sounds fucking awesome and it has its moments but overall just a bit too ponderous and stupid. I kept asking myself why literally any of this stuff was happening. It has Rosemary's Baby bits which feel tacked on, weird saucy bits like in Dracula which feel tacked on, and the courtroom stuff which feels tacked on, leaving Al Pacino to do some strutting and snarling but generally he seems like an ok guy. I actually think Keanu is pretty good in this.
It never really goes hard enough in any direction but I still love the fact they used to make fun, interesting, weird films like this pretty regularly.
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (Blu-Ray, also on Disney+) - 4/5
Rules.

Passenger 57 - 9.5/10 This is absolute top tier 90's action, it hits every beat and has Bruce Payne as a mental racist villain combined with prime Snipes. I seriously forgot how good this is.
AWOL (also know as Lionheart) - 7/10 Early Jean Claude low budget action karate fodder, its very nearly an 8 but just missing that so bad its great quality. Weirdly everybody remembers this film for the swimming pool fight (including me) but it only lasts for a minute.
Ambulance - 3/10 Only made watchable by Jake Gyllenhaal, its at least 45 minutes too long and completely implausible. Its also the most Michael Bay Bayed filmed I've ever seen. Even the action scenes are slow mo then too fast boring.
The Rock and Bad Boys are next on my list, it will be interesting to compare these to Ambulance. As his style was new and refreshing in the 90s.

At least I know Armageddon is great. I rewatched Armageddon recently. I was surprised by how dumb libertarian and right wing it was. Then I was surprised at my surprise, because of course it fucking is.

We saw some new stuff and rewatched some older stuff over the weekend.
Social Network: I remember it being good, but it was far better than I remembered. 9/10
I know what you did last summer: (FAR) Worse than I remembered. 3/10
The Marvels: A lot more fun than the post Endgame stuff that's come out. 6/10 Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning: Predictable fun. Too long, but had the kids on the edge of their seats. 7/10
Maestro: It was fine, I guess? I was a bit bored tbh. 5/10

But in that case I don't want to tarnish the memory. Watch The Island instead, that way no chance of destroying your memory of The Rock and it's a perfectly ok movie.

Yep it's the pinnacle of the low budget Van Damme movies before he hit the big time. It is very entertaining, the characters are all great and the fight scenes are ace :-)

I never really liked Armageddon and never really got what the fuss was about. Cyborg was the Van Damme movie that I get to watch far too young and remembered as being amazing. I watched it again recently and, while not awful, it has a lot less of the cool stuff that I remembered being in it. I think my young imagination filled in a lot of stuff.
Universal Soldier was the best though.

Another youtube video titled, Good disturbing movies you shouldn't watch: Geefes first date collection.
Chose The Nightingale, mostly because couldn't find Speak no Evil anywhere and the other one was Funny Games again. Had not heard of the film before. Christ the night, off the bat it made Requiem for a Dream seem fun. Basically the British are being horrible cunts in Tasmania in the early 1800s, and some of it hits heavy, and it is a revenge story of an Irish girl who was a sort of slave there.
The black natives are treated horribly, some of it is a real difficult watch, but it was a good film.
Disturbing/10, also 9/10
