Scream 4 is a self-aware horror movie about teens getting killed by a person in a ghost mask. SPOILERS THERE MIGHT BE MORE THAN ONE KILLER
There you go, now you are free to watch 5.

So, I kinda fancy watching the new Scream movies, but I'm wondering if I need to watch Scream 4 first? Scream (1996) 111 min Scream 2 (1997) 120 min Scream 3 (2000) 117 min Scream 4 (2011) 111 min Scream (2022) 114 min Scream VI (2023) 122 min I've watched 1 and 2 a bunch of times, and I remember them pretty well, #1 especially. I've definitely seen 3, but I don't really remember much about it. I honestly can't remember if I've seen 4. Scream 5 being called only 'Scream' implies its a kind of reboot, but I know some of the original cast are in it. IIRC a lot of the surprises and twists come from character's history or people turning out to be not who you thought. Which won't really work if I don't remember who they are. Anyway, can I jump straight in at Scream (5), or should I restart from 4 (or 3)? You can start from Scream 5. You can watch Scream 3 to complete the original trilogy. It was the one where there is a movie within a movie if that jogs your memory. Scream 4 is standalone and I totally forgot I had watch it until I read what it was about. It does have the best teaser start.

Just watch 4. It’s a good one and it connects with 6 a bit. Or don’t.

A Touch of Zen (on Blu-ray, but you can watch a 4K restoration on YouTube if you want)
Recently I got a cheap Mubi subscription, and one of the things I watched on it was an old King Hu movie called Come Drink With Me. He was pretty well known, but moreso to Western audiences as a very strong inspiration for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
Anyway, Touch of Zen is another big one, and since it wasn't on Mubi I got a Blu-ray of it. It's about an ordinary portrait artist who gets caught up in a wider political conspiracy, with all the fight scenes you'd expect from wuxia and a lot of Buddhist symbolism to boot.
It's quite long for a wuxia movie (it was released in two parts, and the total runtime is over 3 hours), but it Looks. Fucking. Stunning. Catch it for free on YouTube if you've got the time, it's absolutely essential for martial arts nerds.
10/10

Charade (1963) - 90/100 - Just a wonderfully magical film, from the amazing (Maurice Binder) opening credits to the final conclusion it's witty, charming, and stylish. The cast are fantastic, the story reveals at pace, and it's lovingly shot and scored. It's a firm favourite and whilst not Hitchcock, as close as anyone else has got.
My Plex server is down at the moment and I couldn't be bothered to go into the loft to get the physical disk, so we watched in on Prime. The adverts shown before it were OK, but there was an ad break during which really jarred and annoyed me.

Superman IV: quest for peace. 2/10 I always remembered this fondly knowing it was terrible, but it’s one of, if not the, first film I ever saw at the cinema. I’ve avoided watching it since.
It’s hard to find anything that’s good about it at all.
Transformers 1 4/10 The ‘good’ one. Technically it’s still impressive and ask the effects and stunts would hold up today. Unfortunately it feels like a lifetime has passed by the end. Somehow it’s really boring even with everything going on.
I’m determined to watch all of them though. I’ve only watched the first two and Bumblebee.

I had seen 1 and think I had seen 2, but probably about 15 years before 5 came out. 4 I had also seen in the cinema, but couldn't tell you a thing about it. 5 is mostly good fun though. Very silly, but if you can get onboard with that then it is enjoyable. 6 I thought was pretty much more of the same, but I didn't think it was quite as good. It was fine.

Ghostbusters 2 - 6.5/10. Rewatching them all (2016 aside) with the youngest ahead of the new one coming out at the cinema. It's got its moments but ultimately falls a bit flat imo. Bill Murray is just so good though.
Top Gun - 7/10. Been quite a while since I've watched this. Was on Nowtv, so quality was pants but the stunts are still brilliant. Cruise is believable and charming but it's clunkier than I remembered. A few things just seem to jump ahead (the love interest included). Still great fun though.

Transformers 1 was bad even at the time. I’m not sure why everyone gave it a pass as it led to some absolute atrocities.
Its one of the only films I’ve seen where two of the baddies get so over the whole thing that they just wander off and decide to stop being in the film. I would have done the same.

I had totally forgotten that was a thing. And was the best thing when I was a kid.
But yeah, don't subject yourself to a Transformers marathon. Rise of the Beasts is tolerable, and Bumblebee is by far the best, the others are all worse than #1.

I enjoyed Transformers 1 when I saw it but part of the was because it was in IMAX and it only cost me 5 bucks.
Bumblebee is a very good film and so far above the other dross in the franchise I could be arsed to sit through it doesn't surprise me that it's the one that flopped, people who flock to see Transformers movies don't seem to give a shit about what they're watching as long as there's robots hitting each other. So kids or Michael Bay then.

Took up the free trial of BFI Player and watched Godland (9/10). Just my vibe: brooding, dramatic landscapes, photography, Iceland. Top notch cinematography.
If you liked Silence, you'll like this.

Yeah, I saw Godland a couple of years ago. I'm super happy that it got a wider release, it's beautiful and brutal in equal measure.

While I enjoyed Oppenheimer I can't imagine the Trinity test will look any better on a TV screen, it was rubbish at the cinema. After playing 30 hours of Helldivers 2 the explosion looks even worse!

I wanted big solid things slugging it out but instead it was just a blur of visual noise and you couldn’t really make out what was really going on.

Bumblebee at least has coherent action scenes. Rise of the Beasts mostly does as well, though the plot is back more to being your dumb action plot.
Bumblebee has heart and a great lead and a good plot (ET). Rise of the Beasts is basically Transformers, but competently directed and without all the shit attempts at (racist) humor.
I got to watch it on the big screen recently and the aerial bits were ace.
They actually edited in the bit in the elevator where she has a cap (trying to hide her dark hair) because people thought the romance was too out-of-the-blue in the initial screenings.
Re: "A few things just seem to jump ahead" - I didn't really find that in Top Gun myself, but it is something I've noticed in a lot of 80s movies, including ghostbusters 1. I think it's partly due to the style of editing at the time, and partly due to the built-in expectation that the guy and gal would get together, which meant they often didn't bother putting much detail into the steps to get there. (it's often with the romance, though not always).

Peppa's Cinema Party - 8/10
I'm not a massive fan of her back catalogue, but that's a decent canon extension to her story arc.

The Many Saints Of Newark- a solid 7, I'm sure there are plenty of holes to poke at, but I finished Sopranos so long ago I just enjoyed the fuzzy glow of just-about remembered characters being horrible to each other.

Don't listen to Bill in the rainBumblebee is the ONLY decent transformers film. Rise of the Beasts was a load of bollocks. Just watch Bumblebee and be done with it would be my advice.
