Of course it’s a bummer that the video streaming platforms aren’t as comprehensive as the music ones are. It would be absolutely incredible if there was a Spotify for film. I understand the very specific niche that Lovefilm had has no direct equivalence in the streaming world and I get why people miss that. There is still a tendency to forget the negatives and romanticise the positives with these things. And I don’t think there is really any advantage that Blockbuster had over the digital equivalent. I suppose it is that one stop shop thing. The real nostalgia is with the small video shops that blockbuster out of business who carried all kinds of weird shit. Some random little video shop in a small Yorkshire village carried this in early 80s and kicked off a lifetime of me being an appalling weeb

My mate in uni took a girl to...I want to say that Lars Von Trier Antrichrist film. It was their first date.
I'll never forget him. He was from Sunderland and occasionally people would ask if he was in The Futureheads. He would always say yes. He used to say he'd kill himself at 30 but then when he hit 21 or 22 I think he pushed it back to 40.

But, wrt Spotify, it is we weird now have shit good service. Streaming is undeniably better than blockbuster but, for example, I took out P+ on the amazon on that 3 quid deal they had the other day but its basically impossible to view their entire film library on the shitty Prime app and I can't link my sub to the actual P+ app, so I have to browse for movies on JustWatch, which insane.
Imagine if a music streaming service was *that* shit? you wouldn't put up with that for a second so I have no idea why its ok with movies.

Having a few drinks before/on a first date - "weird" Multiple watches of a film branded as one of the most disturbing films ever made - "what's the big deal?" He watches A Serbian Film before a first date. Geefe to his date - 'Watch this bit in Hereditary, it is hilarious'. Date - 'WTF is wrong with you'?

I remember the trip to the local video shop. A single door in a building. Up the creaky windy stairs and into a cavern of little corridors and rooms laden with shelves. Trying to convince my mates Mum that Amityville Horror was suitable for 13 year olds.

Yeah, we still have an extensive dvd and blu ray collection but it's mostly for when travelling (dvds especially). Rarely put one on at home unless it's not available on streaming (mostly retro stuff...). Mm hm, bulky physical media for travelling, digital for when you've got space at home.

I'd hardly call 3 watches of video nasty a "red flag". Bit of a stretch there. Coming across all Tipper Gore. Wasn’t Tipper Gore’s thing saucy song lyrics, as opposed to films made up almost entirely of rape scenes. But yeah, perhaps I’m being prudish and there’s real reward in those multiple viewings.

It probably is, tbh. It is so weak sauce they have to get poor Margot Kidder to half flap her tits out.

I appreciate justwatch exist and solves my original whinge, but the fact that it's needed in the first place is shit. And finding which platform what is on and then signing up and trying to remember to cancel it so I'm not spending 50 quid a month on multiple streaming platforms.....meh. And Amazon is awful for streaming. They really don't care what they put out. Things are impossible to find and they seem to always fuck the subtitles up. It's almost like they're deliberately incentivising privacy. I've not tried apple.

Or the corner shops that had a little section devoted to video rentals. Sister Act available to rent for its 73rd consecutive week.

Not sure I’ve ever seen anyone say Requiem for a Dream is too clean and Hollywood before. There is a layer of grime and Leto's arm, but the 3 are just too healthy and good looking. I mean he was maybe going for a stylish drug addiction thriller with a hot cast or something. Which is fine. But I didn't find it all that hard hitting or disturbing, at all. Or maybe it's of the time it came out. Now people selling sex in many different forms for quick cash is pretty mainstream and not all that shocking. The Jennifer Connolly character looks exactly how an Only Fans model probably looks. And there are loads of documentarys on heroin addicts that are awful and kinda upsetting to watch.

Pre-blockbuster, for some reason I can vividly recall renting Robot Jox from the small video rental shop in our village.
I'm sure we rented other films over the years but for some reason renting that masterpiece stuck in my memory.

Justice League: Zack Snyder cut
Over 4 hours and fuck my old boots, it felt it. I enjoyed it but didn’t really click with Cyborg and If I see a wind machine blowing Gadot’s hair again, I’m going to scream. Beautiful music, I like the tone and I really like Affleck’s Batman. Recommended but best enjoyed with a bottle of wine to keep you motivated.

I never got Prime for the streaming, I just always had it for the delivery... So streaming was just a bonus! Bit of a decision now wrt ads...
NowTV has a pretty good/big film collection. Picture / streaming quality is the worst of all that I have tried but it is at least much much better than a few years ago.

I never went to Blockbuster just the local video shop with my dad where it was one for him and one for me. Obviously that meant I watched a shitload of stuff a young Jambo should not have been watching. It was also great when it allowed you to rent Mega Drive games, I think I must have had Streets of Rage 2 constantly in my home.

I preferred the video shop / Blockbuster days personally. I have SKY Q, Netflix, Prime, Disney+ etc but still watch dvds, blu rays
All my music is on CDs. All my games are physical versions
It’s good to have both options, I hope the world never moves to fully digital content models. Well maybe when I’m dead as I won’t mind at all then

Physical versions of digital content.

I think we might be due a resurgence in interest in physical media as people get sick of the rising prices and perceived decline in choice when it comes to digital platforms.
Then mrs simple will finally see I was right to keep those boxes in the spare room.

There's got to be some kind of change, whether it's some service that aims to consolidate them into one package or the collapse of a few of the streaming services. It's not sustainable for the streaming companies as it is, let alone the customers.

I think, having just done this myself the thing people are missing is The Event. If you went to blockies, you were locked in to having a movie night, it made it fun.
Now, with a significant chunk of the world’s media at our finger tips, you lazily scroll through an app for 20 minutes while someone rejects every option before giving up and putting friends on again.

It's not sustainable for the streaming companies as it is, let alone the customers. That’s kind of what Amazon and Apple are aiming for. The single pane of glass that all of your subs sit behind. The problem is the prime app is fucking shite and the support for Apple is a bit hit and miss unless you have an Apple TV.

We do family Saturday and Sunday night movies for whoever is around to take part. Been doing it for maybe five years now. Saturday is the kids film with my youngest and then Sunday is a 12 or sometimes a 15 with my eldest. We take it in turns to choose the film and everyone has to respect the chooser’s film. No phones or second screens from start to finish.
It’s probably the highlight of my week and my kids now share my obsession with cinema, and have enjoyed old black and white films and all sorts.
That’s just to say that streaming platforms facilitate some behaviours but they don’t dictate them.

I try. My wife only ever wants to watch old stuff she’s seen a million times and the girl only knows what she doesn’t want to watch so unless I fully drive it, it’s very annoying.
We actually have much better luck with cinema. Me and the girl have been going pretty much once a month since she was old enough to fit on a booster seat.

I look forward to it all week. Will be great when she can watch something a bit older too. Then in the week we work through a series. Currently going through Mando which she's obsessed with. She jumped for joy when I said they're making a film we'll watch in the cinema.

Yeah, Friday is pizza and movie night. It's worked brilliantly for years, until recently as the eldest only wants to watch 15s or other films the youngest can't. So invariably we go retro. Does limit the new stuff we watch though.

I still use Cinema Paradiso (LoveFilm), but I definitely don’t get value out of it anymore. It used to be that whatever film arrived was the one we’d watch and send straight back. Steaming and a bulging Blu-ray cabinet mean there’s so much choice now that the random film from out of left field doesn’t get much of a look in. I’ve been paying to have Enys Men sat next to the tv for two months at this point. Should cancel.
