Dawn of the Dead Remake (Netflix)
I'd watched the original film last week so thought I'd give this a try and it's a bit shit. It has very little to do with the original and is obviously trying to be an action film but it doesn't really do anything better than 28 Days Later did a couple of years before. Aside from Ving Rhames I can't remember any of the characters and the only really memorable bits are the zombaby and the laughable moment when they go to rescue the dog.
4/10

I’d still put it down as my favourite/the best Zack Snyder film

Mad God - 9/10
Extraordinary. Never seen anything like it. Crammed with imagination and absolutely bonkers. Like a film version of Little Nightmares mixed with A LOT of drugs.

I’d still put it down as my favourite/the best Zack Snyder film I'd agree with that and the script being by James Gunn helps.
The intro scenes and then the titles with Johnny Cash's "The Man Comes Around" is a great start.

Gunn and Snyder both do great 'sequences soundtracked to classic songs'. Of course these days almost every trailer is pulling the same trick. I'm sure people did it before, but I feel like they popularized it. That I like Snyder's Watchmen more than I probably should is 99% down to his Bob Dylan montage near the beginning. I'm a sucker for those kind of things.
PS/ See also the last episode of Sarah Connor Chronicles Season 1 for a good use of Johnny Cash's "The Man Comes Around".

Didn’t Logan end with that as well?

All of Tarantino's films make the soundtrack an essential part. The Kill Bills were epic.

Red Rocket - 4/5
Rambling 70s inspired black comedy directed by Sean Baker (Tangerine, The Florida Project). Kind of a cross between Lolita and Five Easy Pieces. It follows on an aging pornstar who returns to his home town because he fucked it all up. Here he charms/cons his way back into his ex-wife's home and sets about grooming a 17 year old girl who he thinks will be the next big thing in porn and his ticket back to the big time.
It's creepy and breezy in equal measure, and Simon Rex, Bree Elrod and Suzanna Son are brilliant. I read it as a fantasy being told by an unreliable narrator, where the reality is much darker. As it is it's very tragic and funny, with lovely summery imagery set against a bleak industrial backdrop. Baker has a real gift for this stuff.

All of Tarantino's films make the soundtrack an essential part. The Kill Bills were epic. You could maybe even argue that his ear for a tune will be his greatest legacy. Some of the songs in his movie are basically the language of cinema now. You hear certain songs and you know whats coming. Its pretty amazing, really.

I play Meiko Kaji in the car a fair bit and people always go all Kill Bill when a certain song comes on.

It is hard to believe there was a time when Little Green Bag wasn’t related to guys walking down a street in suits and sunglasses.

What I love the most is the way he finds the right song for the right scene. Had never heard of some of them but are in regular rotation. I even went to see The 5,6,7,8s (although more through opportunity than anything else).

Snyder's 'remake' just trades on the name and manages to miss the point of the original film entirely. To be fair, the first half an hour or so is actually pretty good and builds the tension well, but after that it just descends into superficial edgelord comic book nonsense - which just about sums up Snyder's entire catalogue, really.

I was listening to some Meiko Kaji one day when my wife came in and said 'why are you listening to this depressing rubbish. She's singing about cutting off all her hair and trying to kill herself.'
She was not a fan.

Zero Dark Thirty 9/10
The hunt for Usama bin Laden, starting with an arduous, dogged investigation by a CIA agent and closing with a raid on an unlikely property in Pakistan. It’s a long film with a lot of ground to cover, a lot of context & background and some questionable tactics. The torture scenes are particularly graphic and difficult to watch. As an investigator, Jessica Chastain’s character, Maya is incredible and deserves the praise. It’s occasionally confusing with a large cast of characters but the cast are very strong. It’s nearly 12 years old but hasn’t aged a day and the denouement is thrilling, shocking and ultimately poignant. Highly recommended

Yeah I find myself watching ZD30 fairly regularly despite its heavy subject matter. Just a very compelling well made film. Big fan.
Fun fact. The Jessica Chastain character is the same person the Claire Danes character in Homeland is based on.

Didn't they have to change that mid shooting because they actually found UBL?

Not quite mid shoot, but into preproduction they had to completely change it. It was supposed to be about the fruitless search for him.
Unlike how Morgan Spurlock did a whole film and book called "where in the world is Bin Laden?" that released not long before they got him, thereby rendering it all pointless.

Clerks 2
I was sure I'd seen this, but on watching it none of it was familiar at all (other then the bits that are the same as Clerks 1 of course).
It went to places I wasn't really expecting it to go (kelly!) but it managed to make me lol quite a bit. Even the naughty bits.
On to Clerks 3 I guess.

Clerks 3 is a very different film to the first sequel, I'd almost suggest leaving it for a while and coming back to it.

Epic Sci-Fi that zips along with some great set-pieces. Really enjoyed it.

Also first trip to an Everyman and that was a lovely cinema experience. Really feels like a treat.

Clerks II is surprisingly good. Anyway...
Saw X/10
Have you seen a Saw film? Yes. It's like that. Mostly. It starts surprisingly well and actually holds back, being kind of a sombre mood piece.
Then the Saw stuff happens. Some people play a game and they're shit at it. Old man coughs. Shawnee Smith looks great for her age but shit for a prequel.
Not the worst one and perfectly fine for some afternoon shite.
