Winters have got progressively more miserable weather wise in the UK over of the course of the past 10 years or so, at least that's my experience down here on the south coast. The average forecast across winter months is largely now just mild (10+) with rain and / or wind - my definition of miserable weather. I absolutely love proper cold, crisp and clear weather (or snow) but that is not common anymore. We have not had snow laying properly here in Worthing since 2013, and that was just a couple of days.
Over Christmas my Mum dragged out family photo albums to show our kids family Christmases / winters past, and practially every year there were photos of me and my siblings playing in the snow in the garden / front garden / road outside our house. Actually real deep snow up to our knees that lasted for days or weeks. One year there was a crazy snow drift down our road that reached up to you bedroom windows. Even in my teens and into twenties we could rely on getting some proper snow every year.
So yeah, winter is absolutely miserable and completely sucks, as soon as Chritmas is done (my fave time of year), I yearn for spring.

My grandad used to go outdoor ice skating every year. He was a farmer in the fens, they'd flood a load of fields and have annual speed skating competitions. It was a whole thing. It obviously doesn't happen anymore, when was the last time we would reliably have sub zero temps for weeks on end to make it worth the hassle of controlled flooding some fields?

I am so fucking sick of the rain.
I never thought about it as a kid growing up in Devon, but since moving back have realised (and since had it confirmed from various sources) that the bastard place is generally wetter than the rest of the country. fuck my life. I am SO bloody sick of this rain. We had such a washout summer, it genuinely feels like it has been raining consistently since the middle of last year. We've just had a wetter than usual February and apart from a few brief moments of respite March so far has been a washout, with rain fortecast for the next couple of weeks.
It is one of the reasons we're thinking of moving back up Surrey/Greater London way (as well as culture, things to do, transport options etc).

Nearly made the same post over the weekend. It's just relentless at the moment. Ground is absolutely saturated. Makes dog-walking a chore rather than a pleasure and the garden is a mess.

We live near some fields and my neighbour who's lived in the same house for 50+ years has never known the ground to be so saturated. We can't even blame any of it on newbuild developments or anything like that round our way.

Utterly fucking sick of the rain. It feels like it's been constant since Jan. Even on days without rain, there's never enough of a gap for everything to start to dry out. My regular walk route is pretty much impassable now, and just wasn't an option while I was trying to keep dressing on my toe dry.
Garden isn't too bad amazingly.

Rain brings life! Think of the crops FFS! That is a serious point tbf. The crops are fucked, every field is saturated. So the price of everything will go up next year, once that filters through. Farmers are holding stores of last year's crops back, hoping for a price increase too.

Most of the fields round here have huge ponds of standing water on them now. The migrating geese seem to be having a good time but some of those fields have almost completely sunk.

Yeah, we have had non stop flood warnings since September. Luckily where our house is we should be safe from any flooding. Swans are enjoying it though.

Thought I'd check the long range forecast to get even a slight inkling that spring is inbound. Rain every single day. Get fucked this is getting ridiculous. Feels like I haven't experienced sunshine since October.

What’s that in hours of sunshine I'd say a solid uncovered 5 hours per day. Clear between around 9.30 and 15.30 with patches of cloud.

Without meaning to be repititious, another ten days ahead forecast as pretty much exclusively black skies above and it's really taking this piss now. I just want to see some shadows, man.

It's proper cold out there. But I seem to recall it being like this in lockdown and that summer was ace.
