Reality is it's probably a 6/10 game but the expectations of the fan base for what rocksteady should put out is creating a massive overreaction. It shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as redfall and gollum but that's the world we live in now.
Things rarely get to be average now it's either shit or incredible.

I think its problem is that most people who are not already invested in it actively want it to fail because they are sick of this kind of game.
I mean, yeah, it looks no better or worse than the other games of this type. I really couldn't give a shit about it one way or the other but I do kind of hope it crashes and burns very spectacularly.

Yeah, it looks painfully average given the studio's pedigree, but people seem to have already decided that it's the worst game of 2024.
I still fancy giving it a go, but fucked if I'm spending a penny on it.

the devs have always made great games (although the batmobile riddler races were awful in Arkham knight) So when they make a really average at best game that is a live service (sure the devs didn't want to make GaaS) its understandable there is lot of disappointment.
The game should not be average

I think that's where its fair to compare it to redfall. Great single player team make GaaS game nobody wants: SHOCKER

Hating on IGN in general is just a weird trend; the Pokemon review controversy is a good example. People always generally agreed Ruby/Sapphire were dragged down by how much surfing etc you have to do, but as soon as IGN said the same thing and marked it down they all started pretending they had never said that.
But yeah, the Journos Are Bad At Games thing is usually just The Gamers being weirdos, most of the cases they bring up are situations where someone who is explicitly not the reviewer had to be brought in to capture footage in an emergency. The Polygon Cuphead/Doom stuff was like that IIRC - they had to just get someone who barely plays stuff to capture footage, explicitly pointed this out, but The Gamers decided that this was definitely the same person who reviewed the game.
The wider issues is that The Gamers are generally emotionally incapable of processing the possibility that people may have different opinions to them on things; and that if someone dislikes something they like, it's not a personal attack on their honour. Similarly, a lot of them are yet to figure out that it's actually ok if not 100% of all video games are directed at their exact personal tastes.

Anyways, this game's problem basically seems like they started with a business model and loot system and worked backwards to the IP.

The footage of the journalist failing to get past the Cuphead tutorial is a famous one but that's just funny more than an offense like some treat it as. Think the other disappointment with this game is because of the long dev time and the fact that it was rumoured and hyped up for a while that they were working on a Superman game. So when you wait for what's to come and see its not that game you've been building up in your head, you're gonna react negatively to it no matter what

We could probably do with more reviews from people who suck/don't really play a lot, tbh. Ive played loads of games where shitty things don't get mentioned or hand waved because its just how gaming is.
If I was an editor, I would definitely have commissioned 'guy who has literally never played a souls game before asks 'could this be your first souls game?' companion reviews for something like Elden Ring (it could be). Like Ive been saying in the Tekken thread, a lot of 'this is great for beginners' comments have been made by people who *arent* actually beginners.

I think this is a large part of it. (See also: BioWare/Anthem.)
There's nothing inherently wrong with a studio trying something new, of course; however, you have to do it well, and preferably not come across as though you're mindlessly chasing the latest trend in the process. Suicide Squad looks to have accomplished neither.
My guess is that, come December, it'll be looked upon as this year's version of Forspoken or Starfield (i.e. "meh"), rather than this year's equivalent of Redfall or Gollum (i.e. "wtf?!").

Do it for popular IP stuff too. Is this new Star Wars game worth it for someone who doesn't really like Star Wars, should I play Midnight Suns if I don't care about dating Blade, etc.

That's a great idea.
I've literally seen one Star Wars movie in my entire life, so I've never given the associated games a second glance as I just assumed I'd be lost at sea when it comes to the series' lore.

The old magazines in the pre-Internet era quite frequently had "second opinion" boxouts on a lot of their reviews. It's all cyclical.

Every reviewer must be someone with the exact same tastes and abilities as them. Obviously there's a ton of value in say, someone who's not a huge fan of JRPGs reviewing a new JRPG, so others like that who are kind of tempted can get a better picture of if they might like this one even though they don't normally. Sadly, because The Gamers think talking about metacritic averages are a replacement for having a personality, it'll never happen.

Servers already down, apparently there was a bug where it was instantly showing game completion. That's a bold way to get speed runners on board.

Pretty cool that this game may be the first to have the all-time-world-speedrun record set within 5 seconds of the game launching
Anyway: as ever, I can't stand that "give us more money and unlock the game early" bollocks. No, today is the game's release date, you're just delaying the launch for everyone else. I find that shit so galling, especially as it's supposed to be a "perk" of the more expensive editions of games. Except once the delayed release date for everyone else has come around, the perk doesn't exist any more but they wouldn't reduce the price of those editions to compensate, indicating that the value of it is £0.00.

the reviewer that failed at the cuphead tutorial (and failed at reading whats on screen) turns out he slagged off Mass effect on 360 and irrc because he played it ages and didn't notice you can upgrades your skills (sure the game reminds you leveled up and have skills points to spend)
Just looking up about the Doom thing, if the polygon thing, what I expect from them, their rockband 4 preview was ironic hipster dipshit levels

Maybe on the old rps forum.
Wasn't the upgrade screen on a shoulder button or something weird?
I don't think it was me, because I don't think I stuck with ME1 long enough to upgrade much

I mean, you're doing exactly the thing I was talking about. The guy you're calling "the reviewer who failed at the cuphead tutorial", who was playing in that footage was Dean Takahashi. The person who reviewed the game for Polygon was... Chris Plante. So not Dean Takahashi. So not "the reviewer who failed at the cuphead tutorial". The guy who captured that Doom footage was also Dean Takahashi. Guess who reviewed for Polygon? Arthur Gies. That's right, again, not the guy from the footage. It blew up because of a mix of impotent gamer rage, and latent Gamergate shit - Polygon was a target for that stuff back then because they had a lot of articles mixing social justice issues in with games, and of course because The Gamers think that all media about games must be targeted directly at their exact tastes, they got very upset about this. So when some guy who didn't review the game posts some footage, they just decided to turn it into "oh yeah, it was the same guy who did the reviews for those games". Even though it doesn't take a lot of effort to discover that's not the case, the story somehow seems to persist anyway. Like, the way that story also usually goes with The Gamers is that they then claim that Polygon dumpstered the review score as a result, when actually they gave both games very strong review scores. Who gives a shit if something is "ironic hipster bullshit?" Just read another site if it's not for you.
