All my stuffs in storage and have hired a van and friends for a couple of trips up the M1. Exciting times. Who knew Luton van's had a legal weight limit? Not me, got nicked on Saturday for being 750 kilos over. Luckily they let me at least complete the journey, but a fine will be coming my way.

750 kilos! How many lead bars do you own?
My purchase has all gone through without too many hiccups. It's a compromise on what I wanted as previously I was looking at period properties with a garden and with a view to long term ownership.
Instead I've opted for a 2 bed with no garden... But it's nice and it should be easy to rent out should I need to go back to NZ longer term.
Haven't exchanged yet. Was considering a home buyers survey but the ones I've seen previously have always been a bit pointless.

Reminds me when I naively arrived at the Swiss border from France with a 3.5 ton van full of stuff. They weighed and saw that it was 5 tons so way overweight, had to empty half of it, store at the border and come back later, not what you need when already knackered. I never realised that vans could be over their weight limit when only half full

Yikes, that's quite a lot! What sort of fine? They said anything from zero (slap on the wrist) to £300, but that it had recently gone to an automated system so the lenient slap on the wrist was less likely.

Folks who have put offers in for houses recently... Have you ever been asked to fill in an online form with your offer details? We haven't moved house for 6 years, so wondering if the process has changed slightly. Today I emailed the agents with the offer for the sellers, then they asked me to do it via a form on their website which also asked about deposit amounts and other info. Seemed a little unnecessary but a quick Google suggested it might make things more transparent for buyers and sellers alike. The estate agents then proceeded to send the sellers an incorrect offer, £5k over what we actually offered! Fucking morons. This is after I phoned them saying why can't I just do this verbally? To which they reassured me it means less errors or shiftiness. Can't make this shit up

We moved last week, we paid for a full packing service as well as removals, one bloke turned up the Friday before our moving date to apparently pack everything (moving day was the following Tuesday) needless to say he was unable to pack everything even though we'd packed a bunch of stuff ourselves anyway, anyway I had already been assured by them that they'd turn up on moving day and pack the rest including taking apart and rebuilding two beds. They turned up on moving day with 3 blokes and a pretty big removals lorry, I was very apprehensive they'd fit it all in and achieve what they had quoted for but a half hour later a Luton van turned up with another two blokes much to my relief, they all worked really hard even though the packing was/is a bit random/sporadic. I gave them £100 tip as I felt quite sorry for them and even with the two vans they had to make a second trip for a bit more and the cats got forgotten in the manic chaos of it all (see the pets thread) but we paid quite a bit less compared to all the other firms who quoted so happy with it in the end.

Can't make this shit up Agents really do seem to be a bunch of dipshits, I bumped the price of our house up by £10k against their advice and it sold to the first person who looked at it (though we didn't accept their offer for about a week), so we made them even more commission, they gave hardly any feedback on anyone who had looked at our house and never asked for feedback after we viewed houses for sale, one senior employee of theirs seemed on the ball, the rest just seemed like they really couldn't give a shit. All the agents we signed up to register with to look for houses asked for a rough idea of our situation, I popped in to see them all as I like to see what they're like, I think there's a lot to be said for popping in to see them on the off chance too, some stuff doesn't even make it on to Rightmove as people pop in and find it's available to view but not on Rightmove yet.

We had to for ours (May last year) but that was through Purplebricks so was pretty much all online. I think it's also because agents now have a duty to help prevent money laundering, and they probably can't be arsed doing any manual data collection. I also learned during the house search process that some agents sell houses pre-market, and then upload them to the sites straight away as Sold to make them seem busier/higher demand.

Awww.... That's not nice at all. Has she said for how long or what she wants you to do before she comes back? How are you handling it? It can't be easy. Whatever you do, don't down your sorrows.
You know where we are if you need someone.

It's more of a "we've been in the same room 24hrs a day for 2 years" thing. We both wfh and haven't the space to have separate offices. Lots of other stuff going/gone on (she got her parrot, I still don't have my dog, shit like that), but it should be a good thing in the end. We need a reset.
As for re-engaging I'm probably going to have to move to Ipswich (!) in about 4-6 months. Likely 6, because the place she has won't allow cats, and guess what.
Yeah that caused a bit of a stink

We had to talk to a finance dude and persuade him we could afford the house before we could out our offer in. I guess when it comes to London prices they might get a lot of people who overestimate what they can get with the reduction in allowable salary multiples. And then they can't get a mortgage.

I think a lot of people have got caught up in the mania around buying property at the moment so for offers they want to make sure that they are serious, and also because many places get a lot of offers very quickly, have a way to order them in preference - it isn't just the amount that matters, but how quickly the transaction can go through (does the buyer have a place to sell, are the funds available now and in the UK etc.)
For the place I just bought I negotiated with the buyer directly as after a lengthy discussion at the viewing they gave me their number in case I had any more questions. I bought for £30k less than asking (offered £40k lower initially) and their estate agent didn't have to do anything - only put the place up on Rightmove so that I saw it in the first place.

When we were buying, we were told we'd not even be allowed to even look at properties for sale until we were in a position to put an offer in, which for us meant having an offer accepted on ours, certainly all of the estate agents in our town were adhering to this same policy and we were told it was a national recommendation now.

I don't know if it's a British thing, but according to everyone, everywhere is a shit hole! Maybe with Harrogate and West Hampstead being the only exceptions. But yeah name a place, and someone will tell you it's a shit hole; guaranteed!
London prices are incredible, my mate is looking at a place in Ealing for a million quid!! How much is a house in a mid suburb of any other European capital?.

Good evening, friends. I've been viewing houses since the new year and I'm happy to say I've had an offer accepted last week, hooray! I intially offered on a house that needs a complete revamp, it was going through probate. I didn't have any faith I'd get it. Would've probably needed to spend another 40-50k for the refurb. It had already been sold but came back on the market bercause the buyer's mortgage didn't go through. So I and maybe 50+ other people, went to view the property and put offers in. Turns out that the old buyer came back on the scene and the probate company decided to go with them. No idea how that worked? Talk about unreliable. But then two weekends ago, I got a call to ask if I could view a property in the next 30 mins I made my way and was shown around by the lovely owners. I fell in love with the property and put an offer in within the hour. Got into a mini bidding war and ended up adding £20k across a number of increases. Worth it in the end. Currently going through conveyancing, got my survey paid for today, gonna happen early next week. I had to go on a bit of a wild goose chase just so I could pay the conveyancers the search fee. Honestly! Anyway, fingers crossed it all goes through. I'll be gutted if it falls through

Ahh nothing like trying not to get emotionally entangled with a potential purchase in the beginning only to find that you are in fact emotionally entangled. I've literally just come out the other side, it really is quite draining/traumatic.

Is this is all down south? We had the choice of about six houses including one gorgeous old cottage that had been turned into a Versace drug dealer house inside and I talked him down about £15k because he liked us.
In the end I went for a new build. I don't have to worry about school catchments tho.

I used to live in Harrogate. It used to be known as an elephant's graveyard (full of rich old people). I didn't much like it as a kid,(not a lot to do) but it must have changed a lot to be a shithole. Last time I was there (last year for a funeral) it "seemed" the same).
