It was always pushing the PS4 to the absolute limit of what it was capable of so it’s not a huge surprise that the PS5 upgrade is less dramatic, especially as there was already a mini little PS5 upgrade anyway.

It looked amazing when it came out and it still looks brilliant now, even for a PS4 game. I don't think this remastered version was needed other than some easy money for Sony. But I guess that's the whole point.

At least they didn't try charging full whack for the upgrade. I wasn't really expecting a complete overhaul for a tenner

I do wonder why anyone would pay full price when you would just blatantly upgrade the PS4 version.

I'm not sure I'd even bother with the upgrade to be honest. If you aren't bothered by the extra curios or the VRR shenanigans then it's just another tenner for less prevalent pop in at the end of the day. If you've not played it before I'd just grab the PS4 version and be done with it.
It's definitely an exercise in making some quick cash, it also pads out the pretty spartan first party release calender a bit.

Bit cynical to call it a cash grab when the upgrade is a tenner and it adds extra content and a new mode.
Plenty of games would charge you a tenner for a roguelike mode thrown in without anything else.

Yeah, it's not really too bad even though I thought it was a cash grab before. A tenner for a few extra res settings and a roguelite.
If you've never played it then £40/50 for this game is still a good price. Fair bit of game for the price.

It’s kind of both a cash grab but also quite a good value one.
The conversation obviously started out as “how can we milk a bit more money out of this game” but the way they have done it is hard to pick holes in really.

Just paid the tenner for the upgrade, it actually makes you download a completely new game at around 95gb FYI if you have the PS4 game already installed.

I tried a bit this morning both performance and fidelity. I honestly couldn't see anything that improved an already amazing looking game other than obviously a 4k mode and higher framerates if you've a compatible TV. But I guess that isn't really the point of this release, it's for a new audience on a new platform and it serves as a director's cut. I'll try No Return when I get home after this long ass day.

With No Return, sorry. Shall be going through the main game again though, ooooo yes.

Do you see yourself playing quite a bit of it? I quite like roguelikes so I'm quite looking forward to it.

re the upgrade business. Never played this, can I grab a cheapo ps4 copy somewhere and then pay £10 for the upgrade? IIRC I did that for FF7.

A reasonable amount I think- there’s stuff to earn or unlock with various characters and outfits, hardware via arbitrary objectives and the core levels in front of you are nicely randomised each time. For £10 it’s a no brainer as a neat little game. Doubt I’ll still be rinsing it in six months but will go through quite a few times I think.

Or just grab and play the PS4 version with the 60fps PS5 patch without spending the extra tenner. According to digital foundry there's basically very little perceptible differences between them.

They kind of fucked up doing that 60FPS patch tbh. Nice of them but a lot more people would upgrade if they hadn’t.

Never played this but loved the first. Guess now would be a good time to give it a go. Opinions seemed a little divided when it came out though I thought?

It is a much much better game to play than the first. However it's too long and some people didn't like the story as much.
I thought it was great but could have done with being a few hours shorter but I loved the story.

A lot of the hate came from anti-woke twats and others who were babies about the story not being what they wanted. It is a bit long (personally liked that) but it’s an absolute top top tier game.

Yeah, gameplay got a bit repetitive and the game was far too long, but you can't fault the story. It feels like most of the negativity towards it was from before the game was even out.

If you don't like it you're either a bigot or too stupid to understand the nuance of genius storytelling. It's the same two blanket statements every time. The most genius thing about the game is how it's been able to weaponise itself from any criticism.
Some of us just thought it was shit. In the first game the plot served the characters. It felt like the exact opposite was true in the second game and it was extremely jarring. And yeah, about 10 hours too long as well.

Again, “a lot” of criticism was in bad faith. You are of course entitled not to like it, but it is not a shit game. That’s objective fact.
