I actually hate playing games that require any skill. But I like making decisions and exploring and loot and story. So I did enjoy W3’s rhythm-game combat (shield-up, strike-strike-dodge, repeat) because it never got in my way.
For context, in Cyberpunk I just walk around using quickhacks to select who dies. “Select enemy to die” has not gotten old yet. Just fought that mantis blades guy and had to pull out a gun like a pleb.

To be honest, I've always thought it a bit overrated. The open world is obviously a massive achievement, but the actual gameplay falls a bit flat for me. The combat is pretty dull and the character progression is handled with some very bland RPG leveling, focusing on simple percentage increases most of the time. The missions themselves are mostly just going from point a to b, with too much reliance on your witcher senses. Writing is good, although I still feel I have to caveat that with "for a game" most of the time. There are some stand out genuinely great moments, but it is mostly good by comparison.
I actively dislike it. The male characters in particular are pretty hateful. Dreary Geralt, Dandelion FFS, and that cunt dwarf.

Some of the story is a bit flat but when the writing is good it's as good as anything I've seen on TV - actually better than the Witcher series, for sure.
The whole "bloody Baron" section is genuinely good writing. Not even for a game, but in general.
Managing to make a reprehensible character feel tragic and empathetic is no easy feat. And the morals of the situation are so murky, it's amazing.
After that bit the game never really reaches the same narrative heights.

The Bloody Baron is an example of that. I don't think much lives up to it afterwards though (at least, up to what I have played).

I've never finished it, either.
I was a little way into what I believe is the endgame stuff when I had to stop and suddenly grow up, as it were.
By the time I got a chance to try and pick it up, I'd pretty much forgotten everything and shortly after, the disc drive in my PS4 broke and put an end to my playing anything but digital games.
Eventually, I got the PS5 and everyone was talking about an update, so I've waited.
I'll start again at the beginning, I think.

It peaks at the Bloody Baron quest line, everything is kind of bland after that. It took me 3 or 4 concerted efforts to finally get through it and I was pretty underwhelmed by the end. It doesn't help that the combat and general movement and animation are pretty shit.

Isn't the bloody baron bit right at the beginning? About halfway through. I thought the Triss story in Novigrad was good too, but yeah, Baron was the strongest. What I liked most about this game was that the sidequests had a good narrative, often tragic stories tied to them. I also thought the monster hunting investigations, going to the site of a murder, investigating footprints or fur or smells or whatever, then tracking down a beast to its lair.. I thought that was really cool. It is a shame that so many other games copied it, even in ones where it didn't make much sense.

The main game is a masterpiece and they managed to equal it with both bits of DLC.
The combat is pretty crap though.

Yeah it's all about the side quests for me, little short stories that had genuinely interesting resolutions.

so i assume Series X is the same list other than the controller haptics? I had the choice of either console but went for the sale deal, it was £7 (or free using my MS Reward points) on Xbox this week

SpiralScratch From what I saw of the stream, I think that's correct.

So it's basically the same unless you want to play on 30fps.

It doesn't help that the combat and general movement and animation are pretty shit. I got through it by the game looking like it will just take another half an hour for the final 10 hours. If it was faster to ride your horsey than just run everywhere in cities, it would literally halve the play time.

Cloud saves too which sound like they'll work the same way as recent Ubi games, which is very nice. That definitely needs to become a standard. Love just being able to pick up where you left off on a totally different platform.

I just read an article about Cavill leaving the Netflix series and it reminded me how badly I need that patch to come out. I’ve just started Thronebreaker I’m so desperate.

I’m disappointed that the consoles still don’t have Hairworks. I was hoping if anything that it’d be expanded to more than just Geralt and the wolves, maybe see some humans get finer hair as well.

What was the verdict, do they like it or just moan about lodding or anti aliasing?

What was the verdict, do they like it or just moan about lodding or anti aliasing? It’s more of a preview than the full DF review. Also it’s Tom, so he was pretty positive. If it were Alex, it’d be complaining about the lack of a full RT path and ambient occlusion, John would complain about the lack of per object motion blur, Oliver would’ve complained about AA and LoD as you mentioned. FWIW, it doesn’t look too different to my eyes from that video, although you CAN see the difference in lighting when they’re side by side. It’s nice that PS finally gets 60fps though.

Ha!
Yeah, it's the 60fps mode I'm going to be most interested in, since playing stuff at 60 I just can't go back. It's ruined me.
