Has anybody noticed a disproportionate amount of spiders and crane flies lately?
My garden is infested with them and one massive tried to take a bath with me last night * shudder *
I'm usually ok with one or two in the kitchen/garden to keep flies away but it's been ridiculous this year! Both of my cats are bloody useless too, one is scared of them the other let one crawl over his big dopey head last week.

Definitely
I’d already moved one sizeable spider yesterday and later on I saw an even bigger one just sat on the landing
Too big to wrap my hand around it without crushing it a little so tapped it into one of my golf caps and carried it out. It could have worn the cap it was that big
Loads of tiny flies here with the occasional daddy long legs too

I'm not seeing more but have noticed a tendency for them to be huge, almost hand sized. It was really rare to see big monsters like that when I were a lad but now every other spider looks like it has to be punched to death.

I got a lovely pink slider catcher off Amazon the other day in preparation for the season.
Had to use it straight away, the spider was successfully transplanted to the garden.

It's one of these. The bristles open and close when you pull the handle link

"Frequently bought together: humane spider catcher - 3-pack of spider deathspray" Wtf people, make up your minds This is a psychopath who's catching spiders in bulk and then gassing them to death- police need to intervene before they move onto bigger prey

Seen quite a few of the big brown house spiders. Had one drop out of a pair of trousers I was putting on not long ago. Had another one dangle in front of my face as I opened a door the other night, fortunately it was only a little one.

I've had two absolutely massive fuckers in the last couple of weeks. What's weird is that both times I had a kind of premonition about one and looked to the floor, only to see one horsing along about 30 seconds later, waving it's legs around as it giddily makes it's way towards the nice dark welcoming under-couch hideaway. Both safely placed outside. Far away from my house so they can fuck off into the neighbours.

Oh yeah it's been ridiculous over here too, but that might have been becuase idk, I probably missed a spot whilst hoovering or was too lenient on the spiders (I am always very lenient on spiders. I think they're lovely creatures who murder my arch nemesis, the mosquito, and I'm trying to atone for the fact that I had to kill a lot of them when I was the only non-arachnophobe in the family). I guess some of their eggs may have hatched.
Then again lately I have been also just living on my own so I guess I must also just suck at regular cleaning. Had an absolute fright about all the ants that decided that my food cabinet was worth raiding (I spilled a bunch of sugar...). I was utterly stressed out about it and then all the actual functioning adults in the room went "Hey this happens to us all the time too, it's fine."

Ironically since moving from the UK to Australia I see way fewer big bastard house spiders. Where I live you mainly get either the tiny little cute ones which I'm happy to cohabit with, or the daddy long legs which are too ridiculous to invoke any fear and get crushed 'n' flushed. We've also got some leaf-curling spiders in our garden that are actually really fascinating, they pull leaves up into their webs, curling them up to make a little house, and their webs can be genuinely amazing feats of engineering.
That said, I did find a small red back in our yard last summer, and you only have to drive a couple of hours north and you're in huntsman territory.
Was gonna include some photos but spoiler tags don't seem to work on images and I don't want to trigger you fairies.

We get these weird sort of semi-transparent spiders in our house. They can grown quite big, daddy long-leg sized, but they're funny and sort of whispy. They tend to sit in corners of the ceiling and it looks like they're hovering on their webs. But for some reason this year there are loads of the buggers.
Also we get tiny fruit flies in the kitchen in the summer, and again this year there are just tons of them. We've stopped leaving fruit in the fruit bowl because it seemed to be attracting them.
I'm really not keen on creepy-crawlies, although I've had to stiffen up a bit since having kids. I'm usually happy to live and let live but if I have to get rid of one I'm afraid I do have to kill it. My wife can just pick 'em up and hoy 'em out the door, but that's too much for poor old me.

The outside of my house seems to be a haven for those False Widows. And there are some gnarly looking fuckers in my garden including Mouse spiders, Black Lace Weavers (which are harmless but really make my skin crawl) and of course some fuck off massive "House Spiders". Oh yeah and woodlouse spiders, which I've affectionately nicknamed the "baked bean" spider.
When I was growing up my parents always told me there weren't any biting spiders in the UK. Turns out that's utter bullshit, there are loads.
For some reason the false widows don't really trigger my phobia despite being by most accounts the most likely to actually hurt when they bite. Just as well as I have to clean them and their homes off my front door about once a month to avoid looking like the Adams Family house.

Talking of biting spiders, I had a third massive house spider last night. I was sitting on the floor beside my sons room chatting to him and it ran over my leg. Thought it was an 8 legged gerbil at first it was so big. Out that one goes as well. I need to use a glass for the really big ones as they can give a nasty nip, been bitten a couple of times.

They eat the big brown house spiders (and ants, for some reason). Apart from that don't do much, apart from vibrate really quickly if you surprise them.

Dict.cc also suggests "daddy longlegs" for some reason. I thought that was the translation for "Weberknecht" the german name for the similar-looking spider that doesn't make webs?!? Other suggestions include "house spider" and "vibrating spider". The latter is the same as the german term "Zitterspinne". I assume we are talking about this one here:
I have had a few in here recently, but they don't creep me out nearly as much as those potentially huge house spiders. One of the old adjacent buildings near our house used to always be full with webs and mostly just that type of spider.
One of those ugly, creepy f***** just sitting in one of the corners (Hauswinkelspinne in german) in that building. Take care:

The thing about that freaks me out about daddy long legs is that I worry I'll inhale and they'll be sucked into my mouth somehow and I'll swallow it and it'll slowly reproduce inside me until I burst at the seams and an endless swarm of daddy long legs emerge to take over the world

Daddy long legs are just rubbish though. Soon as you go to grab one and put it outside all their legs fall off.

If they get any of my genes they'll have ginger beards and a hairline that's given up all resistance. That would be scary, seeing a swarm of bearded balding daddy long legs flouncing toward you like the world's biggest dandelion
