It's just very catchy. I mean this is just amazing: I'll listen to scores like I do any music. I do remember listening to a Hildur Guðnadóttir (who would go on to so the score for Joker and the Chernobyl series) album whilst doing the groceries once, it gave perusing the biscuit aisle a sense of existential dread. See if I listened to that Conan song while walking round Morrisons I'd feel like I was losing my mind.

See if I listened to that Conan song while walking round Morrisons I'd feel like I was losing my mind. There's an element of that, but I think it's cool. Makes shopping more dramatic. It's not like I do it all the time, either - tbh most of the time I don't both listening to music whilst in store these days at all- but to me it's no better or worse than listing to whatever else I have on my phone.

I listen to a lot of classical and avant garde music as well, whilst ironing my polo necks and mulling over what Simon Sebag Montefiore novel to read next, so I'm already a ponce.
My missus always says I'm easy to find in a supermarket because I'm the annoying twat whistling Rossini or Mozart or a film soundtrack.

Most played in our house is the soundtrack to Chef.

I used to buy a lot of film soundtracks in the mid-nineties as I didn't know anything about music but I knew I liked some of the songs in certain films - especially Tarantino films, natch. In fact, I used to listen to the Pulp Fiction soundtrack while playing Doom, to the point where when I go back and play it now, I still hear the songs in my head.
That being said, my favourite soundtrack - as opposed to score - is probably Romeo + Juliet.
As for music with no words, I think the only albums I had were maybe Star Wars and Indy, pre the Spotify days, but now thanks to Alexa I do like listening to a lot of scores when I'm writing or cooking in the kitchen. There have been so many terrific film scores over the years it's difficult to choose, but the LOTR score and Alan Silvestri's Avengers work both do wonders for my sauce-making.
Oh, and it's not film, but the Mandalorian score is a thing of transcendental beauty.

Surely the correct answer is Rocky IV.
But if we're talking film score which has added the most atmosphere and drama to a film, it would have to be Howard Shore's score for The Lord of the Rings.
Completely agree with user britesparc's take on the Mandalorian score, especially the main theme - It's sort of understated, it's sort of strange and otherworldly in terms of the composition, it clearly takes inspiration from westerns, but it sets the tone of the show perfectly and feels like a large part of each episode, to me at least.
Oh if anyone's interested, I made a Spotify playlist of film music that I've been adding to periodically for a few years

Another vote for Poledouris. Also Koyannisqatsi and Mishima. Amadeus. Akira. Dune. I also like the Uncut Gems soundtrack, but the similarity of the track WIndows to AKIRa left me uneasy. windows www.youtube.com/watch?v=HB6Ch_VAfIk

The original Conan soundtrack is all kinds of awesome.
With the mention of Hans Zimmer I've always enjoyed the Blackhawk Down soundtrack, although annoyingly the album doesn't have all the songs from the film.

Many of the big Williams scores are good. Two not mentioned that I enjoy immensely is Jurassic Park and Schindler's List. I also enjoy Clint Mansell - Moon and Paul Giovanni - The Wicker Man.
My favourite score might still be a game soundtrack though, the one for Journey.

Love a bit of 80s synth and The Running Man main theme is a bit if a classic.
On the flip side, a more brooding synth for the theme from The Shining, it's quite creepy and menacing in an understated way.
Transformers: The Movie ost by Vince DiCola. Absolutely love this one and I've posted a medly version of the soundtrack.

Rodderz Bloody love The Shining theme. When it kicked in towards the end of Doctor Sleep I nearly asphyxiated myself with joy.

@wuntyate have you seen Ready Player One? There was a whole Shining scene in that with the music too.

Is it cheating if I say The Wall?
Excluding the famous and obvious ones (Star Trek, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, etc.) because that would be too easy, then I'm gonna drop the music from Stalker. Not that there's a lot of it throughout the movie, so it stands out.

The soundtrack to Brazil is marvellous and so haunting in its use of Aquarela do Brasil.
When Sam hums it at the end after, well, you know what, the first time I saw that it haunted me for days afterwards. Absolute marvellous, perfect ending. And of course the studio execs HATED IT.

Another example of an offbeat score that's totally perfect, John Harrison's synth score for Day of the Dead. youtu.be/MFUr-0PERJcSynth calypso should NOT work for a zombie film, but it totally does! The "mmmwwwww-wrrrrrrr" sound when the newspaper flicks up to show THE DEAD WALK! is totally iconic. Speaking of music projecting impending doom a la The Shining, I can't think of a more apposite example than Johann Johannssen's score for Sicario. youtu.be/sN9gcEZMZO8Just utterly terrifying. And relatively simple, yet utterly foreboding. It's perfect for the film.

I like the 'moon' and 'the fountain' soundtracks for ambient post-rock type soundscapes and for those that are a collection of existing tracks 'natural born killers' and 'morvern callar' spring to mind.

Hell of a god damn soundtrack and just what the doctor ordered if you want 80s synth. With a transition to a chase almost as good as the home alone!

Moon and The Fountain both by Clint Mansell, of course. He's pretty good for scores. Not bad for the former PWEI member.

Jurassic Park is an excellent score indeed. have you listened to the incredibly long version of the main theme slowed down 1000x or whatever? I'm not sure. I remember that kind of stuff being a thing for a while many years ago, and I know I checked out some stuff. Symphony stuff at that speed is just ambient I guess?
Some people have mentioned song soundtracks, as opposed to actual scores, and I feel obligated to mention the Spawn soundtrack, which was all kinds of fun!
