www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/sep/16/home-computing-pioneer-sir-clive-sinclair-dies-aged-81Sir Clive Sinclair, the inventor and entrepreneur who was instrumental in bringing home computers to the masses, has died at the age of 81. His daughter, Belinda, said he died at home in London on Thursday morning after a long illness. Sinclair invented the pocket calculator but was best known for popularising the home computer, bringing it to British high-street stores at relatively affordable prices. Many modern-day titans of the games industry got their start on one of his ZX models. For a certain generation of gamer, the computer of choice was either the ZX Spectrum 48K or its rival, the Commodore 64.

A one off for sure.
Should be buried in a massive broken Z and X rubber coffin.

Very sad.
81 is a decent innings to be fair and he earned his place in history many times over with Sinclair computers - and the infamous C5 of course.
I owe him a lot for getting me into games, opening the doors to my first dabble with computer programming via Sinclair BASIC. Spectrum computers basically defined a large part of my childhood.
I’ll be raising a glass tonight.
Cheers Clive.

I can confidently list getting a Spectrum as the major catalyst to why I'm in the IT field in general.

Legend. And he gave us all a laugh with the C5.

First computer I ever had was the ZX 48k. Dad bought it, along with ABC Lift-Off and Treasure Island Dizzy...
Cheers, Clive.

10 PRINT RIP CLIVE SINCLAIR 20 GOTO 10 RUN Massive SYNTAX ERROR. Needs double quotes. And a semi-colon after the last, for added gee-whizzery.

Hopefully they sent him off like a Viking, lying back in a C5 on fire going at a steady 5mph until the battery dies.

Started my Sinclair journey with a ZX80 then a ZX81 with a proper keyboard and 16K RAM pack... in the run up to Christmas 83 I'd bought a couple of Spectrum Games (Knight Lore was one I think) but unwrapped a beautiful C64 on Christmas Day!
That was the end for Sinclair in my house but a mate had a 48k and we spent hours building loading screens and The Quill adventure games. He then went full Sinclair with the QL and two MicroDrives. Short of The Pawn and a database of his 200AD comics he didn't do a lot with it..

Oh how sad, RIP Sir Clive. My first two computers were a ZX81 and a 48k Spectrum. I'd probably put him down as one of the two cultural figures who influenced me the most growing up in the 1980s (the other being Ian Livingstone)

I was there from the ZX80 days. Truly a guy ahead of his time, and someone I admire to this day. My gaming stated with Spectrum. RIP Sir Clive.

I was too young for the Spectrum, but remember playing Dizzy on my mate's old one before he got a Megadrive. RIP, a real one-off.

There was a frosty reception in some quarters on the return to school after Christmas! My Dad had taken me to an after school computer club in early November and seen me playing AMC and that swung it. He also managed to get a C60 full of games from the club so I had plenty to try out before hitting the shops with my Chrimbo cash.

So sad to hear and like many of you said it was his idea of a "cheap" computer that got me a 48k Speccy for Christmas and that eventually got me interested in computing and I.T. Tons of happy memories related to that machine, freaking hours and hours playing games, writing shit programs, "hacking" games looking for poke cheats, typing listings in from magazines, recording programs on the radio one night when i caught the broadcast, and getting cramp sat on the stairs landing with two cassette recorders hooked up "archiving" games i'd borrowed from mates at school, the whole lot. Thanks, Sir Clive.

Dunno why but I thought he was already dead! Sad news though, have fond memories of my 48k, cheap, chearful but full of charm with some classic games on it. I still rate Knight Lore as one of my all time favourites as a game and as a "wow" moment!

:'o(
I started out with a 16k Spectrum, which I convinced my parents to buy me for Christmas because "it'll help me get a job in computers". Did 33 years in IT before getting made redundant.
Cheers, Sir Clive - you were a legend.

Speccy was also my first computer and first experience of gaming, I imagine a huge amount of 35+ gamers / IT folk are in the same boat. RIP to a colossal legend.
