Reading and Leeds are in such a weird position these days. They've gone for the big "edgy" pop money and ended up as The Big Chav Weekend Out. When I first went in 1995 at least the vast majority were there for the music - these days the music isn't worth going for. It's just an excuse to act like a twat without mummy and daddy finding out.
Old man shouts at clouds meme etc etc.

Yeah, when I was going it was all grubby Kerrang and NME readers being quite tribal but it was also just a load of pissed up 16-19 year olds cutting loose and being stupid.
There were campsite litter bonfires every year, I even remember one in the crowd for Prodigy once. Agree that the difference is social media and maybe the expectations of a generation who’ve missed out on their older siblings festival stories due to covid.
I bet the Netflix and HBO Woodstock documentaries have stirred up the idea that this could be a story for the press too.

Booked tickets to see Zeal and Ardor, should be good Hopefully. First gig on quite a long time.
Toyed with the idea of getting tickets to see Amon Amarth (and Machine Head, but mostly interested in Amon Amarth) but factoring in travel and hotel (getting back get Cardiff would be a pain) it's too expensive at this short notice... Still kinda tempted though
Kinda irked that I missed out on tickets for Anthrax / Municipal Waste.
Might get tickets for Napalm Death next year too. Definitely seeing Bloodywood next year.

I’ve got Jeffrey Lewis then Anthrax/Municipal Waste coming up soon and Unthanks later in the autumn.
Run The Jewels is the only Reading set I’ve watched on iPlayer because I’m old and either don’t know or don’t like the rest of the acts they’ve uploaded. That set was pretty cool though even if the crowd seems a bit flat.
My wife is still a bit on edge about big events so I’ll probably not be booking anything else this year. To be honest its been so long I’m totally out of the habit of even checking the listings at the moment anyway.

I'll have to see what's available later on tonight.

You’ve got to really dig for them and over the weekend it was basically just the live feed. Main stage only as well from what I can tell. Feels very scaled back compared to previous years.

Considering the line up they've managed to get, let alone some very moving renditions of foo fighter classics, the highlight has been Grohl's daughter singing Jeff Buckley songs flawlessly.

There was a lot to unpack there. Homme's Bowie song was a highlight for me.
I definitely see them poaching Rufus Taylor if they carry on.

More than once I thought he was Hawkins
I don’t know how Dave Grohl and rest kept it together for so long and every time I tuned in something fantastic was happening.

Man that was a long gig, far too old to be standing in one spot for over six hours. The atmosphere was amazing though with Queen and AC/DC being particular highlights. Also amazing on a technical level that they kept it all going with only the odd break.
Rotating through guest drummers during the Foo Fighter’s set was also a nice touch.

I couldn't get tickets in the end but I'm kind of glad I didn't as I imagine I would have spent 90% of it going back and forth to the bloody toilet.
Really enjoyed the show from my living room though, everything was snappy, very few fuck ups considering everything that was going on.
Justin Hawkins got about, didn't he?

He was getting a bit carried away at times, like its Brian Johnson let him do Back in Black by himself he’s really good at it I need to wait for an opportunity to watch back having thought this myself, but I read that Brian beckoned him on because he was struggling. He's getting on and is practically deaf. Hawkins with Wolfgang VH was a massive highlight for me. Wolfgang has resisted playing his dad's tunes and been very vocal about the disrespect of people continuing to snipe at him for not doing so, therefore those songs were a big deal. It felt like a lot of ghosts were there last night including EVH. He slayed it.

My highlight was Supergrass, I'll be honest! I'm not big on stadium rock, which loads of it veered into (I appreiate Taylor was a big stadium rock fan so fair play). I did enjoy Homme's Bowie cover though, that was great, and seeing TCV reunite to play a couple of songs with the mighty JPJ was cool. I turned it off when Rush came on, can't stand that. No chance I would have been able to sit through a modern day Foo show either... if they played any pre-98 songs I'll check them out on youtube. And sad to hear Novoselic didn't make it on stage having travelled all that way, not sure what happened there, that would have been a highlight for me.
Everyone seemed to be having a blast though and all for a great cause, so well done Dave + co.

The muted response to Chapelle turning up early on was interesting. Wasn't sure if it was mostly "wtf is this guy?" or they were unsure because of the recent shit with him.

From a musical perspective, this wasn't my bag at all; for what it represented and meant to those involved, fair play and then some.
It was quite a spectacle, and I'm glad they were able to do something so massive in honour of a guy who clearly deserved it.

I suspect it was probably more of a “who?” than a “Boo! Wrong un!” He’s a big name but he’s never really been mainstream in the UK and I’d assume the Foos audience is as mainstream as a rock audience gets

Yeah I'm leaning that way too. He looked a bit put out and I'm wondering if he was trying to figure out which it was himself.

Nandi Bushell is really something else - she struggled to climb onto the drum riser, before knocking 'Learn to Fly' out of the park.
