Did some backlog surfing tonight and discovered Dark Souls II from a Humble Bundle from a million years ago. Installed. Will give it a whirl. Am I right in thinking this was the first of the games to land in the PS4 era?

More than a graphical upgrade. New enemy placements and stuff. It's a great game

It's a pretty decent game if you can plough through it - it's LONG, especially with the DLCs, which are well worth playing. But there are some major low points.
Tips to make the bad stuff bearable: 13 Dex asap and get a bow from the blacksmith Poison arrows to cheese the more egregious stuff Look up adaptability breakpoints and reach them Dex = rapier plus a bit of int for magic weapon Str = mace and later Greatsword plus faith for lightning weapon Magic build = fine Otherwise look at a hex build, even after being nerfed it's ridiculously strong.

Otherwise look at a hex build, even after being nerfed it's ridiculously strong. I've never really understood this mentality in DS. Why would you want a build that's OP? Wouldn't that take the fun out of it?

Some people like bending the game over their knee. I don't judge. I wouldn't do it in Dark Souls, but this is basically how I played Hellpoint. You being able to curb-stomp enemies is your reward for putting the build together, as you're likely underpowered during the process.

I find games become a bit soulless if you remove the challenge Soulless

So tempted to replay this but on the switch. Currently on sale at the moment. Don’t want to burn myself out on souls though before Elden Ring. Don’t know what to do!

Wouldn't that take the fun out of it? Sometimes it's nice to glide through it, especially if you're hoovering up a few trophies or just having a casual playthrough

The 60fps made a big difference to DS2 on PS4.

*ragequits and uninstalls*
That's it, now I know for sure that I'm not getting Elden Ring. I can't even get through DS2 anymore!
Ok, maybe it would have helped a bit if I weren't in the Covenant of Champions... but still, the idea of replaying whole sections is just too annoying to me nowadays.

I’m back in! Just worked my way up to the first bonfire in Undeadburg. That hour flew by. All ready rolling into vases, amazing how it all comes back. Feels a bit weird in portable mode. I don’t know whether that’s just the game showing it’s age a bit or it’s portable mode but does feel a bit odd. Probably grow accustomed to it. Also I swear the buttons have swapped round on what would be X/O keep cancelling out of menus and roll feels odd on O.

Didn't you post on EG about doing a run to get a ring where you couldn't level or use bonfires or something in DS2? Or was that someone else?

Didn't you post on EG about doing a run to get a ring where you couldn't level or use bonfires or something in DS2? Or was that someone else? Well, that was the 360 version. It's a bit (a lot) easier. And that specific challenge is not nearly as bad as it sounds really, you just need to plan which bonfires to use beforehand, other than that the game plays like always, except for the fact that you can't reinforce your estus and attune magic (not a big problem for a melee-oriented character). Plus I wasn't in the Covenant of Champions. I might have underestimated it. But still, I can also tell my patience is not what it used to be. You've brought this on yourself. Yeah I know. But even so, my best days are behind me. I remember in the 360 era I was even running the first game in NG and NG+ without leveling at all.

Worked my way up to the Undead Parish and opened the gate. Forgotten how dark this game is, might need to whack the brightness up. Its been Good fun, been relatively easy so far, didn't die up until the armoured pig. Then died a couple of times to the stubborn pike men and my inability to be patient. Its great to be back, the game is showing its age a little bit, it is far more janky than I remember, and the feedback is a bit weightless at times but I been enjoying being back. Like to see a demon souls style remake. The finesse of the later games really is noticeable when going back to this.

I keep eyeing up the remaster, but I can't in good conscience buy DS1 again when I've abandoned DS2 and DS3 and left them on the pile of shame for about a year (so far)
Context- that's exactly what I did for DS1. Got about as far as Demon Ruins and then just... stopped. For about 2 years it was my #1 favourite game that I hadn't finished, but then one day the stars aligned, and I reinstalled and got back into it.
Never did manage to defeat Manus though...

Maybe what I need to do is replay DS1 and then, spurred on in victory, continue onwards to finally complete DS2 and DS3...

I started a new run playing Remastered on PS5, it loads so quick!
To get access to those sweet chunks I’ve gone and killed Ingward early on, very naughty - I felt bad

So saves don't carry to the remastered version? Not that I'd have wanted to continue my alt from the old version... think I went with a cleric and didn't get on with it...
My first/main character was a STR+END build who liked to carry very heavy weapons but still skip about on <25% encumbrance. Might try a wanderer this time.

If you played Remastered on PS4 then the saved characters come over to PS5
They did for me anyway

No I mean I had saves on the original x360 version which carried to XBone and Series via backwards compatibility. I wasn't exactly expecting them to be in Remastered, but I wouldn't have been surprised either.

I've just discovered that in the Demon's Souls remake, during the Tower Knight boss, the music doesn't laugh at you anymore. That makes me really sad for some reason.

Speaking of EZ modes, I picked royalty and sniped him from the banisters without taking a hit. But, same with Hex, if you pile into magic, quite a few things one shot you so its still no faceroll.
