A clue - it is based on a dos platformer that had a somewhat dodgy name.

I broke down and googled it, as I thought I'd nailed it with my guess and wanted to see how far off I was. Turns out this game ripped it off after they accidentally gave the source code to a competitor!

It was all the rage on shareware disks back in the day. Anyway, as itβs a hard one Iβll just give the answer and someone else can go SKUNNY KART

As I reckon I was the closest in naming the rip-off game ripped off by this game... A dead easy one:

Ultima VIII - The Black Gate.

Correct! The Hoe of Destruction was usually one of my first pick-ups... felt a bit like cheating.

Ah, yes, almost forgot about the powerful hoe. Was a cute Easter egg though. I didn't have a lot prepared so will take a risk with an older game that hopefully people will recognise...

Head Over Heels? Looks too detailed for a Speccy though.

Wrong game and wrong about it being too detailed for the Spectrum

Somehow I can copy paste the text and it comes out as "Eop dam" - is that a clue?

I'd forgotten about this, been busy at work. The art style looks really familiar but i just can't place it.

I might as well post the entire screen. I actually still have my boxed copy of this, as I child I was at a table sale, lamenting that they only have boring bric-a-brac and old clothes. Why can't they have games? There was a small stack of US import games I'd never heard of, I selected what looked like the most interesting. But you see the lord giveth and he taketh away and I ended up taking home an incredibly obtuse old-school graphic adventure with an incredibly distinctive and nonsensical title.
I played R-Type and Ghosts n' Goblins instead.

Yeah, i'd heard of it but never played it. Probably saw some screens in old magazines which is why it seemed familiar or it may have been in the stack of "backup" games i was given for my STe by the dad of a friend of a friend.
By stack i mean about 4 boxes of scene disks. It's why when i saw "Automation" scrolling on the screen of the Atari ST on the Pet Shop Boys set on Top of the Pops i didn't think it was related to MIDI but that they supported piracy. lol

I did an image search. What the fuck. Also: "Tass Times in Tonetown is an adventure game published by Activision in 1986. It was designed by Michael Berlyn and Muffy McClung Berlyn" I have a hard time believing the second name is a real person.
