with a forum subset all furiously polishing their gearstick in preparation for an imminent new snow/mud/spin/tyres/runner game I restarted snowrunner and took more screenshots to add to the eleventy billion I already have

A few postcards from Assassin's Creed Origins. As a game it's certainly not perfect, but as a place I love it. On this replay I did a lot of reading outside the game and compared places in the game to archeological digs and recreations. They did a pretty great job overall. Never quite felt the same sense of place in Odyssey.
Alexandria
Cyrene
Giza
White Desert
Fayoum Oasis
Temple of Sobek. I think the pyramid in the background is supposed to be one of Amenemhat III.
Memfis
Zahra, made me wish this game had some romance. Bayek was even single by the point I did this.

I wasn't a fan of Origins and its bloated systems (I did only play around 10 hours of it though). But I gotta remember to try the Discovery Tour mode someday. Should be pretty interesting.

Yeah, there are definitely some issues with how they designed the RPG systems. Still, I enjoyed Origins on the whole, it was Odyssey that broke me to the point I stopped playing (though I will probably try it again at some point because I really liked Kassandra as a character). The discovery tour is pretty neat and can be done in an afternoon.
A few more AC:O, mostly from the second DLC.
Thebes
Siwa, Temple of Amun
Isu vaults. I've played three of these games now and still have no idea what the hell the framing sci-fi story is about.
Some of the "afterlives" from the second DLC, themed around different pharaohs around the Amarna period.
Nefertiti's afterlife is all about fertility.
Akhenaten. What shall we do for the guy who was all about worshipping the sun? Make it really sunny!
Rameses II, war.

Homeworld - Deserts of Kharak:
You'd think that an RTS that exclusively takes place in a desert would be plain and boring and not offer interesting terrain, but DoK manages it.
Deployed turret (probably) guarding some ressource extraction site.
Support cruisers can repair and ressources can be loaded off there instead of at the carrier. The base runner (on the dune) puts down defense turrets and such.
The debris left behind after battle, damage models and such are pretty decent as well and contribute to a good feel of combat.
Going purely with air didn't always work out, but could develop into fun slugging matches as the wreckage on the approach to my ally attests to in this case.
The AI usually did send over a swarm of these fast attack vehicles right at the beginning. The carrier defenses aren't powerful enough to deal with them quickly.
They are fragile, but very fast and ideal to hunt down railguns. In this case it's LAVs - the equivalent vehicle of the other faction.
A few of these AAVs were a nice counter for the fast vehicles early on, but the AI usually did start sending over lots of railguns after the first attack and AAVs don't have the speed or range to deal with them.
Assault Cruisers do have the range and power though.
But for Cruisers they are pretty fragile.
Things weren't exactly going well, but I think my AI ally eventually sent over some reinforcements and saved me.
Two AAVs standing guard early on on some nightly map.
Massed AAVs moving forward with repair support in the back.
A 1vs1 match: I was caught off-guard as the AI rarely goes for massed air.
So I sent forward my unexpectedly useless army to attack across the very small map, while trying to tech to air defense vehicles.
I did do quite a bit of damage and was eventually able to stabilize back home with some air defense, but otherwise it was a hard-fought back-and-forth with a lot of casualties.
These artillery cruisers aren't usually meant for the frontline either... The small hovercraft were providing a good screen, but kept dying off quickly.
But it did eventually work out nevertheless.

A tip from Steam forum.

Tron 2.0 (with the Killer App Mod) I quite like how it looks similar to the movie. Played this last year for the first time and the art design is lovely. It still looks really good, especially given its age, and has a really distinctive style that both matches the movie and builds on in. In particular, they make some really distinctive and impressive worlds with cool 'alien' vistas and structures. Unfortunately I found the gameplay etc.. to be rather repetitive after a while. I thought it was great for the first few hours, but couldn't finish it.

One problem I found was that I rarely used any of the weapons other than the disc. The disc was fun, but it got repetitive. I really wanted to finish it, but it just wore me down. I wanted to see the next levels as they were always amazing visually, but I couldn't really face any more of the gameplay. With the mod it doesn't even really need remastering, at least in terms of visuals. It'd be one of the few games where I'd want the remaster to change the gameplay while keeping the visuals basically the same. Usually it's the other way around

I didn't get on with the disc much, and once I got the shotgun and sniper rifle (sorry, I mean the Suffusion and LOL), I started using almost always those. This actually made things more fun (I guess?), because I was always on the lookout for energy stations and enemy drops. Later on I got the ball launcher, which was nice against bosses... overall, the weapons were decent, I think. It could have used more variety, but I can't say I was ever bored. Still, I'd be all for a remaster. Of course, it's impossible because Disney.

Space Hulk - Ascension:
It's all very dark and it's often hard to even see if a corridor is a dead-end. I have overlooked ventilation shafts - which enemies love to use as shortcuts - more than once. Mostly it's very tight corridors, but there are also bigger rooms and hallways like in this case. It's nice to be able to deploy more firepower, but the Genestealers have enough room to attack en masse as well.
A survival mission, where the squad gets split: Brother Clovis had died for the Emperor and Sergeant Warin did find himself surrounded.
Trying to leg it wasn't overly successful...
The next try went much better. Felt a bit like that one scene from Aliens and the Tarantula turret does also eventually run out of ammo. To the top right the camera view of Brother Hellico can be seen. He was covering one of the approaches to the room where the other half of the squad was sitting.

I don't remember their first Space Hulk game being that dark. I mean, the dead space between corridors was black, but the corridors were reasonably well lit iirc (i probably don't rc) Are you uncovering the map as you go? iirc the original just had the whole map revealed from the start, though enemies only showed up as blips/ghosts until you had line of sight on them (like the board game). www.youtube.com/watch?v=fD4FiLYd3w8

Well, you can never see everything all that well. Only the more obvious stuff like corridors and room layouts become clear, but there is no indication of ventilation shafts (which seems very much intentional) and there is often no clear sense of where I can actually move to before I'm close enough to actually go there. Spawnpoints are indicated once you get close enough. It's a bit inconsistent though since blocked doors are indicated and you can mouse over the environment to light up other doors as well, no matter where they are on the map. Genestealers attacking doors can be seen as well.
The Terminators have headlamps and there are some environmental lights as well, but it's still always kind of murky.
I don't think that there is an overall map screen.
Edit: MercytheMad has done some Livestreams pretty recently. But yeah, looking at your link, they really look quite different, especially considering that they are by the same developer.

Assassin's Creed Unity. I think if there's one thing they did well besides building the city itself it's make it feel populated. There's a lot of aggressive culling and trickery going on, but I don't think I've seen lively streets and big crowds like this anywhere else. I didn't even notice a lot of repetition in how they looked or acted.

I never played Unity. I dropped off after 2 or 3 and then came back with Origins.
I have it, UBI or epic have given it away along with nearly all the others at some point. Worth a go?

If you already have it I'd say it's worth a go even if it's just to explore the city for a bit. I liked it on the whole, but it's very uneven. Some bugs and glitches - not terrible but I had to restart missions a couple of times.

I think it's a shame that what Ubi did for the crowds in Unity was apparently never repeated in other games. Yeah, there's lots of tricks to make it work, but it's impressive how it all comes together.
Considering it somehow managed to run on the potato CPUs of the last gen consoles, and it's a fairly stable 60fps today on Series S, perhaps it should be possible to do something like this on a modern engine too.

They couldn't make it work with the mechanics of the carriages in Syndicate, and every AC game since then has been set in era where that population level wouldn't have seemed as realistic.
I imagine someone could mod that level of crowd density into something like Cyberpunk 2077 where it would thematically suit it, but it would probably require beastly hardware to run without tanking framerates.
