Is it bad that I read that in the voice of a snooker referee.

I learned about it in the oddest way. Someone came on camera in a teams meeting, all teary eyed and said ‘sorry to interrupt, but it seems Dame Maggie Smith had passed’ like she was announcing the Queen died.
Felt bad for the guy who had to then move everyone back onto the thrilling subject of URL blocking.

At this exact moment this young couple are talking about Maggie Smith dying on the train I'm on. They just learned she is a Dame too. The woman just said "ahh well" and then asked what they should have for dinner.

I can't believe that they didn't give everyone the rest of the day off, tbh.

I know they've got these things pre-written, but it remains weird to me just how quickly places like the NYT get full-length obituaries out as soon as a famous person dies. They put baihu to shame!

That's a shame tbh, I liked Maggie Smith.
I'm not devastated or anything, but feel a bit more sad than the indifference I feel towards most celebrity deaths

[br I wonder if there's an age where they start to keep the celebs on file. Anyone over 70 must have a file ready to go, but what's the youngist age they'll keep pre-written mobituaries for.

It's an interesting question, but also so fucking morbid lol. Like if they have a list that isn't just based on age, but history of drug addiction and all that.

This was always my favourite Maggie Smith moment. She’s only on screen twice, for a combined total of less than three seconds, and doesn’t say a word, but manages to convey every emotion going.

I bet the NME have had an obituary for Pete Doherty ready to go for the past 15 years or so.

I’m guessing most publications have had an Ozzy Osbourne one saved to drafts for over half a century.

Yep I considered the same gag. I decided against it on the small chance someone would reply with "That's my GRAN you're talking about!"

Zomoniac By contrast, nobody has ever written one for Keith Richards - we all know he'll outlive Twinkies and cockroaches.

I grew up with that man’s face on TV, but couldn’t name a single thing outside of Beverly Hills Cop I’ve seen him in.

Marvyn Dorfler from Midnight Run. One of several amazing characters in that timeless film.
