I think they are more infamous for that horrific nightclub fire now than they were ever known for their music.

RIP Sven, fuck cancer!
As ToTP is over he'll forever be the only England manager to have a song performed on it about him, not quite the glory of international cup victory but unique.

So Graham Thorpe jumped in front of a train. That’s an atrocious thing to do to someone else on your way out.

the mental mind is - by definition - in no way thinking straight and i'm not going to attach any blame to those so ill they think the best thing for them & everyone else is to jump in front of a train
at the same time, the figure i heard when i worked at railtrack a gazillion years ago was that 1 in 4 train drivers have hit a jumper by the end of their career and it Fucks Them Up so much it frequently *is* the end of their career. my office was opposite safety & standards who went out to all the worst shit and it damaged them

Yeah, if you're in that state you're not thinking rationally about what your death will do to your family, let alone innocent bystanders.
My cousin took his own life last year, left behind a wife and two young kids. It's the most selfish thing you can do, but he probably (wrongly) thought it was the only thing to do.

I'm forever grateful for 5-1 win over Germany. RIP.

Not all suicides are as emotional, some quite a rational decision. Can’t imagine a front row seat on an ustoppable object right in to someone, Jesus.

Ronald Reng’s biography of Robert Enke (A Life Too Short) is really good for trying to wrap your head around what might lead to stepping out in front of a train.
I hope history is kind to Sven. His time as England manager coincided with a real nadir of toxic tabloid and celeb culture around the squad, and he went on a real silly journey after that but his record previous to that stands up all on its own. And it really seems like he’s gone out with a lot of friends and goodwill.

As I said to friends earlier, he was essentially "my" England manager, as his time in post coincided with me watching England home and away. He wasn't perfect and made some mistakes but still got us to the quarters in successive tournaments, which felt like progress.

It’s a sad day. If I were him I’d have “banged Ulrika” etched on my gravestone.

Well that's a bummer, I just finished watching Friern the other night. I've seen / played several of those and never noticed they were voiced by the same person, shows how good she was I suppose.

I remember him as a guest on Buzzcocks. Had a good sense of humour. He always seemed like a decent guy. Sad to lose him.

Nope, me neither, but he wrote most of our childhoods - Jamie and the Magic Torch, Chorlton, Wind in the Willows, Dangermouse, Count Duckula etc.

Although all of those you've listed were great to watch. Sadly, I now have the jamie and the magic torch theme embedded in my brain. Even without watching your video! Jay-mie, Jay-mie, Jay-mie and the(his?) magic torch...

I’d imagine most Cosgrove Hall stuff does as its obvious it was being made by people who wanted to do something really good and who took care in what they were making. It was a real nice change of pace from all the noisy cgi landfill that most commercial shows for younger children are these days. (The Alexander Armstrong CBBC Danger Mouse reboot is actually good too but a lot more action focussed and faster paced)

Brian Trueman was so prolific, a ton of my childhood TV memories were written by him. A good innings of course and he'll live on through his work, not quite as good as living on through not dying but you can't have everything, where would you put it? Down a hole through spacetime created with a torch maybe?

Herbie Flowers
Probably best known for playing bass as a session musician for Lou Reed on Walk On the Wild Side, and with David Bowie, T-Rex and many others.
But for me, I’ll always know him for writing this piece with instrumental rock band Sky. My Dad had (still has) the Sky2 LP and one of my earliest memories is listening to this.
