Did everyone who liked Alan Wake forget to register on the new forum or something? Haha! I loved Alan Wake and thought the following Remedy games were pish in comparison. Doubt I'll bother with the remaster though, would rather keep the pleasant nostalgia.

Actually just realised I still have the PC version installed since god knows when with a saved game right at the start of Chapter 6, leading to the end lol.
I may finish that off.

He gives off the vibe that his novels are total airport thriller trash but he takes them as seriously as Marenghi

I would have probably picked it up as I can't remember much of it but it sounds like a really half arsed upgrade. The game is absolutely made for HDR so it's pretty shit that they couldn't even be arsed to put that on.

It is sounding more like a reissue than a full upgrade but I guess its just Remedy reminding people of the game while they tease a 15 year late sequel

So, having discovered that I had a saved game mid-way through the last chapter from some previously abandoned run, I ended up blasting through it last night. Memory was correct: the combat is still absolutely fucking terrible.
I'd also entirely forgotten about the two 'Special' DLC sections, post main-game ending. I wonder if they are going to leave the structure like that for this remaster(re-issue?) or incorporate them more seamlessly into the base game as a true narrative ending etc.
It's still got a great vibe and aesthetic, mind. Nails the schlocky Stephen King ode that it's going for.

This is out tomorrow isn't it.
I keep telling myself I don't want it, but I think I want it. Partly because it's getting near Halloween and I'm going to want a spooky woods fix soon, and also becuase I think I may be ready to give it another go on account of loving the shit out of Control so much.
Hmmmmm. Tempted. Even though I KNOW the combat will fucking piss me off. I'm still tempted.

I was (mildly) tempted as well, but the tepid Push Square review has put me off quite a bit! I mean, I like a good story as much as anyone else, but gameplay always comes first for me. This sounds as though it'd be enjoyable to watch but a chore to play.
Is the combat really that bad?

It was pretty bad at the time so I imagine it's really bad now.

I’ll pick it up for the nostalgia hit but the combat was always pretty janky. It’d probably be better if they’d turned it into more of a mystery/adventure game. I did love it at the time though and its not that expensive at launch (£25) so fingers crossed it’ll be about £15 before Christmas.

Oooft, you're not wrong. They nailed my feelings when playing the original: Aaaaaaand yet... I still want it?

I didn't think the combat was bad as such, more misplaced. It just seemed to annoyingly get in the way of the atmosphere and story all the time.
The little xbox live game that was just based around the combat, American Something, was pretty great as it was specifically focused in that way and fit with the grindhouse feel it was going for.

In a way that review is quite reassuring because it basically says its the same game it always was. So the remastering hasn’t been botched and since I liked it first time around I’ll hopefully still like it now. Or appreciate its janky atmospheric schlock anyway.

I look forward to comments from new players about how much of a dick Wake is I can't remember any sensation from playing it other than relentless boredom. It was one of the most insipid games I think I have ever played. I will definitely be giving it a miss.

Hmm... Looking at that video review, I'm not seeing much variety.
Woods. Check. Generic dudes. Check. Mechanic of using light to make enemies vulnerable. Check x 1000. Cut and pasted to fill out required hours of gameplay. Check.
Do Remedy have a cultural or religious objection to making interesting games? So... Generic. Every time. I thought this might be the first Remedy game I buy (on sale).

Environment, check. Enemies, check. Combat mechanics, check. Yup, it’s a video game alright.
Alan Wake is all about the atmosphere. It’s a good game but it’s flawed. Not sure I need to play it again but if you like Stephen King-esque horror it’s worth a look. I think each of their games gets better than the last though, so if you don’t gel with their style then you probably shouldn’t bother. I wouldn’t call them generic though.

Yeah, I can understand Alan Wake being accused of mediocre gameplay or bad combat but for generic that implies that there are lots of games like it and I’m not sure thats true.
Although plenty have nicked ideas like the torch combat and the narration is a bit walking sim-ish nowadays I suppose.

All the footage is the same gameplay loop repeating again and again!
Sorry, but for games of this sort there is a certain expectation of enemy variety in both behaviour and appearance to keep things interesting, like every single Resident Evil game ever, or even Dead Space. Where are the enemies that pull off your head and place their own head atop the stump in Alan Wake?
'Torch combat' is such old hat I can't believe anybody calling it an original idea is being sincere. Sure, if you never played anything ever on anything before the Xbox 360.

It has different environments and enemies. It’s set in a small eerie town that’s surrounded by wood, so that does play a large part. Enemies come in different sizes with different attacks, but the style is similar due to the narrative. Unlike every Resident Evil or Dead Space ever, it’s not trying to do what those games do. You’d know if you played it.
No-one called “torch combat” original, I said the game wasn’t generic. The combat, which is based around light, isn’t quite all there is to it. You have weapons.
If you actually watched the review it addresses most of your complaints.

Just to nitpick it has more standard enemy types than RE7

Picked it up via Eneba for the price of a few coffee's... not sure when I am going to have time to play this as i have about 5 games on the go but I really am looking forward to replaying this game, something about the atmosphere has stuck with me all these years later.

Erm. That's an interesting look they've given him. Dammit I'm still debating this. Watched some footage thinking it would put me off and it did the opposite.
