Pretty sure Billie Jean was missing from the Vice City PS2 rerelease, and will almost definitely be gone from the remake. A game like this with a handful of songs probably isn't as much of a licensing shitstorm though.

After some searching it seems GTA turns out to be a pretty bad example, every PS2 GTA game has lost songs in subsequent editions. Vice City has lost 8 songs, San Andreas has multiple missing tracks, but GTA 3 is mostly intact with just one song lost.
The standard agreement seem to run for 10 years so GTA IV has already had songs removed and Alan Wake is 11 years old so there may be re-licensing required.

Hopefully the soundtrack is intact, some absolute bangers on there, perfect for setting the mood at the end of (and sometimes during) each episode.
Was the only time I'd heard Poe's Haunted anywhere aside from the abomination that was the Blair Witch sequel.

I think they can keep all the music. Wasn't that why it got taken off digital sale a couple years back? Then MS stepped in and paid the fee before giving the publishing rights back to Remedy?
Edit - yep..
Due to expiring music licenses, all digital and retail versions of Alan Wake were pulled from purchase from the various storefronts as of 15 May 2017, though Remedy offered a large discount for the title in the days prior to removal. The removal does not affect those who already own the game, nor does it impact the availability of Alan Wake's American Nightmare, though that title will likely be affected similarly when its own licensing deals expire.[119]
However, by October 2018, Remedy had been able to rework the music licensing details with Microsoft's help, and the game was made available again on Windows storefronts, with the original music tracks

I hope this is a precursor to a full sequel with more downtime/spooky investigating between combat sections. A but more open worldy and puzzly maybe.

I didn’t really take to America Nightmare focusing almost exclusively on the weakest part of the game

Some details,
Alan Wake Remastered will use the Northlight Engine by Remedy Entertainment, previously used in Control.
The game supports ray-tracing for reflections on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC, but not on last-generation consoles.
There is no Nintendo Switch version. While we haven’t heard from our source about it, maybe a Cloud version can happen like Control.
Last-generation consoles will benefit from higher resolution and QoL changes but no ray-tracing.
The remaster will support 60 FPS.

Actually tempted now. Despite fucking hating the combat, I loved everything else and I think I actually want to give it another try.

Actually tempted now. Despite fucking hating the combat, I loved everything else and I think I actually want to give it another try. I loved the general atmosphere, aesthetic, ambience, almost everything. But the combat was absolutely fucking balls: constantly felt like you were fighting against the controls and the flashlight mechanic always just took that fraction of a second too long to make almost every single combat encounter tedious/frustrating. But I'll still be there day 1

From Remedys website,
Technical
What are the main technical features of Alan Wake Remastered?
Remastered 4K graphics at 60 FPS* gameplay Redone cinematic cut-scenes with improved facial animation and lip sync Richer environmental details (improved textures and additional geometry) Enhanced character models with updated hair and shaders Improved visual effects and lighting *PS5 & Series X 60 fps / 4K *PS4/Xbox One offer a 60 fps Performance and 30 fps Quality mode (included in Day 1 patch)
Does Alan Wake Remastered support ray tracing / HDR?
No.
As this is a remaster built on the existing Alan Wake engine and technology, adding in ray tracing / HDR support was deemed too time-consuming. This would have taken resources away from other critical areas.
We are confident the game looks great even without ray tracing / HDR support.
Technical details / resolution / frame rate
Render Resolution is the internal resolution size. Output Resolution is the resolution of the image after temporal upscaling. There are some rendering and post-processing differences between the versions of the game depending on platform.
Platform / Render Resolution / Output Resolution / target frame-rate
PlayStation 4 – 1080p / 1080p / 30fps PlayStation 4 Pro (Performance Mode) – 1080p / 1080p / 60fps PlayStation 4 Pro (Quality Mode) – 1296p / 2160p (4K) / 30fps / 4 x MSAA Xbox One – 900p / 900p / 30fps Xbox One X (Performance Mode) – 1080p / 1080p / 60fps Xbox One X (Quality Mode) – 1440p / 2160p (4K) / 30fps / 4 x MSAA PlayStation 5 – 1440p / 2160p (4K) / 60fps / 4X MSAA Xbox Series X – 1440p / 2160p (4K) / 60fps / 4 X MSAA Xbox Series S – 1080p / 1080p / 60fps PC – 4K / unlimited

So is this basically just an upscale/texture upgrade then? No mechanical changes? I only just discovered I had this in my Steam library and I dunno if it's worth waiting for the new version or if I should poke at it now if I'm interested.

From what I’ve seen just an upscale and a couple of tidied up models I’d guess? Doesn’t look much different to me. To be honest I’ll prob just wait for number 2 - I suspect that the rate of release of modern games, and the smaller margins in graphical/technical quality year on year, makes it worth doing these remasters etc. I look at Skyrim and think ‘what are you doing, it’s ten years old?’. But you could release it again in five years as a fifteen year old remaster and my current 7 year old, who wasn’t even born when the original version came out, would still probably find a lot to lovein there.

I only just discovered I had this in my Steam library and I dunno if it's worth waiting for the new version or if I should poke at it now if I'm interested. Honestly, don't think it's worth it even if you already own it. As mentioned up thread, it's not that great to play and a pair of new fancy pants graphics isn't going to change that.
I just don't get why people give a shit about this game. It got a lot of pre-release exposure as it got swept up in the launch hype for the 360 (and looked quite fancy for 2005), languished in to development hell for *years* and then popped out to baffling praise. It's plays like arse and the technical aspects of it were pretty meh by that point as we were well in to 360's generation by then. The story aspect was never all that.
It's not awful, but it's no better than a whole skip load of narrative drive 3rd person action games by that time and since.

The graphics were pretty great at the time, especially the lighting. But yeah it's really nothing special at all. Except for Roy Orbison.

*Fairly* dynamic lighting in other games was a thing by the time it was released. Not in 2005 when they started previewing it, sure, and that was part of the hype of it all.
Though I could be totally misremembering things.

I just checked, the 360 version of Alan Wake is available for just a fiver, since it works with backwards compatibility you'd be expecting them to pull out all the stops. Former PS3 owners who went onto a PS4 or PS5 are an easier sell but Xbox and PC gamers have other options.

This looks pretty underwhelming really. Might as well just play the PC version that's already in my library instead if I want to play through it again.

Yeah, I played a couple of hours of it in the end and it seemed pretty shitty.
Though while doing it I had a hunt through my unplayed games on Steam list and I really should actually give some of them a try. 890/1551. Quite a few of those are from shitty bundles or were played prior to Steam actually logging playtime though so you can probably knock a few hundred off that. Still a lot.

Did everyone who liked Alan Wake forget to register on the new forum or something? Haha!
On a related note, for those on Xbox who are so inclined, this can be had for a whopping £8 or so if you hop over to visit your Brazilian aunt.

I liked it. Wasn't expecting a massive upgrade but sucks it's not true 4K.
Will likely buy it just maybe not right away.

No HDR is a bit shit, I'd take that over anything else.

HDR would really make the game pop. It's a shame this just seems like a lazy remaster.
A pass from me.

Did everyone who liked Alan Wake forget to register on the new forum or something? Haha! It probably got a lot more attention back then because it was an exclusive and had featured in Microsoft press conferences, then came the PC version and now? A lot of the excitement and attention is gone and a more sober view has become prevalent since Alan Wake will be even more ubiquitous and what's on offer doesn't seem so exciting.
They could have tantalised us with a technical showcase remaster. They didn't. So it falls on the game itself. Is the gameplay noteworthy? Well, maybe it's the story and the characters then? There are other third person horror games this year too, any of which may suit potential buyers better and at least are new games and not a re-release of something that's over a decade old.

I loved Alan Wake, it was the only Xbox exclusive I missed when I moved from 360 back to Playstation for the PS4. Very happy to be regaining access to it with the reissue. Sure it had its awkward moments but it just had such a rad uncanny vibe.
