My cat has started shitting in the bath. She's getting a bit old and doddery and likes going out less and less these days, but twice in the last week I've gone to let her out and she's just sat there and looked at me like I'm retarded and then gone and shat in the bath half an hour later. On the plus side, it's easy to clean up and I'd rather she shat in there than somewhere carpeted for example, but I'm thinking I should probably invest in a litter tray at some point.

Let’s not use the word retarded in that fashion please.

This and having to treat them like babies is not convincing me that I might like to get a dog one day. Don’t do it. Nine weeks in and my overwhelming feeling is one of regret.

We've been looking after a friend's dog a fair bit recently. Had him for over a week at one point. That has definitely made us reassess getting one of our own. He's a pretty chill dude most of the time, but even so theres just so much neediness compared to our two cats. Nearly lost my shit with him when he spent an afternoon barking at anybody that walked past the house while I was trying to work.
Dealing with a pup would probably ruin me.

They are definitely far more needy and hard work than cats. Puppies are especially hard work and I think a lot of people have found that it's a struggle over lockdown or return to work. In a way, it's good that the prices have risen, because it means that you need to be certain that you really want that dog. You won't get your money back on Gumtree, despite what some people seem to think. Zomoniac hopefully it'll pass and things will get easier for you. But after nine weeks? That'll make the pup what, 4 or 5 months old? Many don't really start to adult fully until they're 18 - 24 months old, I'm afraid and even then, it'll take work and consistency on the part of your family to help that along in the way you want. Major barks at anyone who comes up our long drive, dogs are very territorial indeed. You can train them not to, but it can be useful for them to do that as well.

Honestly, it's awful. He can't be left alone out of his crate for more than a second, is hyper for ten hours a day. Most of our downstairs is behind metal fences because books and soundbars and dining chairs are apparently tasty. The house is permanently messy because he want to join in all the cleaning and makes it impossible. He backs Robovac into a corner and bites him so that's no use anymore.
One of the cats is terrified of him and has taken to showing his distress by pissing on random things. He did that when we first got him as a kitten and hasn't done it in four years since so definitely an anxiety related trait.
Walks mostly involve standing still whilst he frantically tries to pull away. He's decided in the last three days he hates his crate for no reason having previously loved it. He'll constantly whimper at the door to go out, most of the time he doesn't need to he just wants to play with sticks, but if you ignore him then you'll miss the one time he actually needs to and end up with a nice big puddle to clean.
I don't have many regrets in life but this is shaping up to be a huge one.

Another thing to consider, for anyone thinking about getting a pup, is that there's often a difference between the dog you want and breed you should get. I've always wanted a husky or other wolf-like working dog but the amount of work and attention to keep it happy and not destroying everything in my home would be far, far more than I can manage. It just wouldn't gel with the way I live and work at all. Understanding the reqs can be a huge help. But any dog is essentially a child in terms of care and attention - easier to keep but never self-sufficient, they're just better and don't live as long.

Shibas are known for being very cat-like. Alas that doesn't mean they're low maintenance and can sort themselves out, it just means they don't give a fuck what you think, they'll just do whatever they want.

Oh, reading a page from days ago, switched on me…
Had a rescue a couple of years ago that had been brought up with puppy pads, he still, very occasionally thinks he can take himself off to a corner that must look like the one he was “trained” near. Awful things.
We had Petplan with our first dog and they’re excellent if you need to claim but be warned the cost gets absolutely ridiculous as they get older. In the end, with a 14/15 year old dog it was £55 a month, the excess and the first grand of any treatment. Really pissed me off after using them his whole life. That cost was ten years ago too. Think we’ve just gone with basic co-op insurance now. And have put a bit of money aside if an expensive operation is needed, it’s more for whether one of them legs it into the road and causes a ten car pile up we get sued for.

I don't have many regrets in life but this is shaping up to be a huge one. I'm sorry to hear about the cat. That's obviously something that needs to be dealt with, but's difficult to advise much on the internet. When we brought Major home, we made sure that the cats had places where he couldn't go that they knew they were safe in. Essentially, we blocked off their favourite areas from him being able to get anywhere near them and made sure they had a route to their food and toilet. Do you have a harness for walking? A Halti No-Pull harness and lead (I don't like the nose collar, personally, but they do work) is a great training tool for walks because it stops them pulling away by just turning them back on themself. It clips on front and rear and the more then pull, the more it turns them. Sooner or later, they learn to walk nicely on it. Again, it takes a bit of time, but it's a fairly inexpensive way of surmounting that obstacle. Have you got a trainer, or been to a Puppy School/classes with him? If not, it is usually a big help. There's normally reasons for all of that behaviour and it sounds like you could use some in person help to smooth it all out...

He’s had five classes and his first one to one next weekend. We’ve got him a harness now because he was choking himself so badly trying to pull so hard on his collar.
The problem with the cat is he’s so fucking stupid. The little one made sure she laid down the rules for who was in charge early on and is fine with him. Pod is just too special to deal with him. We have plenty of spaces he can go to that are out of reach, he just forgets they’re there when he’s in a panic. He’ll cry at the living room door to come in, then cry to go out again when he remembers there’s a dog in the room. Then two minutes later he’ll be back crying to come in on the other side again. His idiocy has always just been endearing until now, but it’s becoming problematic.

Hopefully the one to one helps, it really helps if the trainer can see what's happening.

You never quite know what you're going to get but with training and routine, any dog can be brought into line. As dogbot said, they are still puppies for a loooong time. Even my mum's dog, who is nearly 5, can still act up, although thankfully he's stoped nipping everyone. Speaking of Bob the Dog, I have never known such a needy thing. Obviously he's never left alone as he's with my mum 24/7, which is going to cause problems. He whines if I leave him with my wife and walk across the room FFS. (he has a strict hierarchy and I'm No2 on the list!).

Negan is judging all of you. Especially Danno as he is a he. It was a combo of the 'speak to the manager' haircut (admittedly much cuter on a dog than a person) and assuming you had fat fingered the name Megan. My sincere apologies to ya good boi.
