Feel like an arsehole for admitting it, but I've become so blasé about this kind of thing. Columbine and the like were shocking, but the standard reaction these days is just to shrug and think "if only there was something they could do..."

Think it all came to a head for me after Sandy Hook. If that didn't help with gun reform, then nothing will.

Well there's only so much sympathy you can have while they resolutely refuse to do anything about it.
It's like that friend who you've had dozens of discussions about quitting alcohol because of how much it's ruining their life, who just keeps on relapsing over and over. There's only so many times you can speak to people if they aren't willing to actually listen.

Weird there's effectively a black-out with regards to how it all panned out/the suspect etc.

The weird thing is that there does actually seen to be a reasonable majority of people in the US for sensible gun control.
There's dumb party politics and the NRA to blame, but i assume it also boils down to the way the political system works and the way those people are divided between states. It seems like it would be impossible to ever get agreement on any actual change, no matter how many people want it.

Can't they do it at State level if the Federal level is so gummed up? Like Climate change regs?

There are some really interesting and perplexing statistics that surround gun ownership in the States, the figure is a few years old but in 2021 only 53% favoured stricter gun laws. www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021/09/13/key-facts-about-americans-and-guns/

It's like brexit here, there's a majority who are sane on the issue but the systems in place prevent anything from actually progressing.

In all fairness, I don't worry that Brexit would shoot up a children's birthday party

It should definitely be pointed out he was shot after ringing the doorbell and shot again as he lay bleeding on the floor. The guy who shot him was taken in by the police and released because of Stand your Ground laws. Fucking fucked up country where you can get shot for ringing a doorbell.

Imagine being so racist that you think your life is danger because a black child accidentally rang your doorbell. It's so fucked up. Then imagine a system that doesn't prosecute you for that. I just...

Remember guys, guns are just tools. For making livings stop living.
That was almost a haiku.

That's it really isn't it. Most knives are not designed to end lives (there are exceptions, of course). But a gun is specifically designed to kill. And many are specifically designed to kill people.
So when people use the whole "a gun is just a tool" argument it just doesn't add up. Cars kill loads of people, but they're not generally designed to do so (though given some of ridiculous Robocop-esque utility vehicles in 'murica I do think there might be exceptions)

I've read about how a lot of people in America, especially rural America, actually consider it common practice to never turn into someone's driveway even just to turn the car around. Because you just assume everyone has a gun and can kill you.
