We had our own mass shooting here downtown Saturday night. Six teens and younger children hit, two critical.
No deaths tho. So..

Seeing other kids being taught at such a young age how to handle guns is just so sad and scary, frankly.

Seeing other kids being taught at such a young age how to handle guns is just so sad and scary, frankly. I grew up on a farm and was taught how to shoot and handle guns from quite a young age. Its just a hobby and guns are cool. The problem, really, is capitalism which is why America is the only country that gets shot up regularly. The fact that something so fucking dangerous is less well regulated than buying alcohol or gambling is just a symptom of Americas broken political system. They have bought and paid for light touch regulation and successfully manged to make ownership a political issue to the point that 'gun' is a personality trait for some people. In a normal country, people should (and can) be able to own guns, take them to a range while nursing a semi and not shoot up a school or a convenience store afterwards.

Yeah, its designed for one thing: to shoot stuff. Shooting stuff is fun. If it wasnt there wouldnt be millions of hobbyist range shooters around the world. You can wring your hands all you like but people like shooting stuff.
But hats off for ignoring literally everything else I said.

I didn't ignore it, I agree with it but not that guns are "just" a cool hobby. If people like doing stuff that causes death, being against it can be waved away as "hand-wringing" - Got it.

Like it or not, guns are cool. Its why people buy them. People come up with all kinds of bullshit reasons that they *need* to have one for XYZ reasons but, fundamentally, guns are cool and they make you feel like a big man when you shoot them. Thats it.

Shooting stuff is great fun. I'm kinda of the view that guns are awesome and we should be allowed to own them but should be firmly under lock and key at a range (or something) where you have to be a paid member and undergo reasonable background / mental checks and a regular proficiency and safety exam.

When I went to a Clay-Pigeon shoot with work years and years ago, it didn't make me feel like a big man, it made me feel uncomfortable. So they may make you and deranged Americans for example, feel like a "big man" but you're not speaking for everyone. Rape makes some people feel like big men, no idea why people "hand-wring" over it, rape is cool. Like it or not, that's why people do it. Your logic is a bit suspect.

To be honest, I would never shoot a gun even if I thought it might be fun because I don't want to be like those weirdos

Shooty games are a major thing, don't you know?
Also, my now four year old son invented his own version of guns during lockdown without any external influence (to material with guns) with which to "get" me.

I go shooting whenever the opportunity arises when we're on holiday somewhere. I've shot a huge range of firearms over the years because why not if you like it? It's not for everyone, that's fair enough. A mate came with us last time and it scared the shit out of her (completely understandable! It's scary).
No one should have an AR-15 under the bed, but if I can shoot one in controlled circumstances at a range then coolio

Yeah, most ranges in this country will only let you shoot solo if youre licensed and provide safe storage for your gear. Its not like I'm saying 'hand them out like sweets' just that we are actually a good example of how to shoot in a safe and controlled manner if you want to. The problem, really, is the US is beyond a lot of gun control measures even if you were to show willing because there are just so many of the fucking things out there.

I did clay shooting when I was younger and my dad has brought home dinner that he shot. People enjoy it and there is a skill. Plus the ritual of aim, pull, fire, reload.
But there is a world of difference between sport shooting and shit in America. Just limit guns to single shot, non automatic/ semi-auto for regular people.
There's also the popularity of paintball and videogames. They CAN be enjoyed safely but it's a culture in America.
