So I'm trying to lose some weight and decided to, for the next two months, replace about 2 meals per day with Huel, which is supposed to be "nutritionally complete food". They have shakes, bars and soups/stews. Just had my first Huel White vanilla shake. Not overly sweet, quite oaty. I like it. Anyone else have any experience with it? How different is Huel Black (the stevia-sweetened, non-oat-based, lower-carb alternative)?

I get it advertised to me constantly which kinda puts me off it tbh.
How much does it cost per meal?

I've used it. I find if you use it 3 - 5 times a week, it can be really effective and useful. For me, trying to use it twice a day was not sustainable. Soon got very very sick of it and craved regular food.

They give you a discount the more items you order. But for the standard Huel White shake it's £1.32 max per 400kcal shake, and the soups are £2.35 max per 400kcal soup.

I can only manage one of them a day - otherwise I just feel really bloated for some reason

I have it once a day for lunch, it's quite calorific so you still have to watch what you snack.
Also Ive been on the black version for the past few months as the original (white) is quite heavy on carbs so was causing my cholesterol levels to spike.

Wouldn't you be better off just eating a salad?

Bit different as they don't use artificial sweeteners in the black version. I did slightly prefer the white original if I'm honest.

Wouldn't you be better off just eating a salad? Genuinely, no. Huel is nutritionally better, and also considerably more convenient.

You know you’ve fell down the marketing rabbit hole… and then dug yourself a new hole at the bottom, when you believe a load of ground up powder shit is better than eating actual fresh vegetables.

There are lots of people on Reddit and the Huel forum who have been "eating" nothing but Huel shakes for months, sometimes years. And no matter how "nutritiously complete" those products are, consuming nothing but Huel shakes for such a long time can't be healthy. I'd be scared my teeth would fall out from non-use.

They're just a mass-market accepted MRP without the bro-science stigma. Bodybuilding brands have been providing various MRP powders for decades that the same consumers would balk at. Clever marketing is it.
When you can't get real food in they're a useful alternative to "snack food" but real food/balanced meals should always be the priority, of course.

Convenience factor is a big plus too. Personally, I started it because of my IBS, and honestly it's much improved.
To get the same fibre/water ratio and getting a good balance of nutrients while avoiding the minefield of fodmap foods as well as all the salads and veg that made me feel rubbish is a godsend.

The branding is fucked. Huel is the big guy from Breaking Bad and he never looked healthy and "meal replacement" is basically encouraging cannibalism in my book. Except everything looks grey grey grey instead of like lovely leg steak, or delicious liver with fava beans

If I ever considered consuming one of these as a “meal” I’d just give up on living

Out of interest, how many Huel users here also own one of those ridiculous Jawrsize things I keep seeing youtube adverts for as well?

If you haven't got the willpower to not eat chocolate for breakfast I'm not sure trying to replace a meal with chalk and water is really going to work for you as a weight loss program. That being said I can see the attraction of something easy like this, and the science behind this kind of stuff is definitely there. I was thinking of getting some if God forbid I ever have go onto the office again regularly.

The convenience has definitely been the win for me with it. Whether just making one quickly for breakfast or when going on a hike or playing cricket and using it as my easy lunch or mid innings snack.
If you get the Vanilla one I recommend putting some cinnamon in it.
