The ONLY time I remember a cinema audience properly getting all het up in the UK was when I went to a preview of Batman 89 (I am that old) and we'd queued for hours to get in.
The audience was clapping and cheering EVERYTHING that happened onscreen. When the titles were coming up and Prince's name appeared, everyone went crazy (LETS GET NUTS!).
Oh, and when I went to a preview of Star Trek Generations wih a load of trekkies, they were loving it and clapping everything.

I remember Phantom Menace getting a big cheer for the Lucasfilm Logo and the STAR WARS title.. but again, people had been waiting a long time. Both in the UK btw. Followed by stunned silence as the audience were brought up to speed on trade route taxation developments no doubt...

I don't remember cheering for Batman, but I do remember it being the first and probably only time that I ever actually queued around a block for a blockbuster movie. And this was in a small town where there weren't usually enough cinemagoers to make it to the front door. Followed by stunned silence as the audience were brought up to speed on trade route taxation developments no doubt... Yeah, well... I don't remember similar cheers for the logos in Ep 2.

I remember getting my dad to reserve the first copy of Batman at the local off licence/video shop for me. I remember walking down to pick it up terrified that the guy wouldn't give me it because it was a 15. He fucking did though. What a day.

Just back from watching with the whole family. I think it's up with Casino Royale in terms of Craig's movies. Really enjoyed it though... ..there's no question it's too long, and I really think it would have been better to trim or do away with Blofeld....okay, I'm not sure how they'd do that given how closely it follows on from Spectre, but the scene in Belmarsh was largely pointless and it's possibly the first time I've seen Waltz phone in a performance.
For the most part, I thought it was excellent, and I loved the blend of bolder elements - including the shocking and unambiguous ending - with classic tropes (submarine bay base - check!). I thought the action sequences were some of the most purely enjoyable of his tenure too - Cuba, Norwegian, er, wood, and the fight to the control room in the base.

Re: Bond Rifle View™ – not really a spoiler, but I'll spoiler-tag it nontheless: Near the end, there's a circular hallway, Bond enters from the side, a goon appears and he turns and shoots him - the Bond Rifle View™ happening in the movie itself, like when a movie character mentions the name of the movie (Nomi nearly did it in this one). It's not super obvious, but I can't image that it was a coincidence.

A few years later did you ask them if you could borrow Batman Forever? "No, you have to bring it back tomorrow." [/PeterBeardsley]

Ah, the good old days of local video shops and my mum writing a letter to the nice old couple who ran the one on the high street saying I could rent whatever I wanted, regardless of rating and they were fine with it! They had a whole folder of letters.
They let me have first dabs on all the standees and whatnot they got in to. If I'd kept them in good condition they'd be worth a fortune now, sadly our garage flooded and I lost most of them. I've still got one for Darkman.
I remember when The Serpent and the Rainbow came out they had a promotional grass snake in a themed vivarium that they let me have (I think they were glad to be rid of it).
So many happy memories.

Just back from seeing this! Let me check I remember to do spoilers I liked it! I thought there were some cracking action sequences (in the woods, and heading up the stairs at the end was all a bit John Wick). I'd agree with the comments that it probably goes on for a bit too long and the villain was a bit half arsed. Not quite sure what his plan was all about and I missed why there were some rivers of acid. But I chalked it all up to him just being an evil villain /shrug. A fitting end though and I liked that it was not at all ambiguous. For me it's Casino Royale, Skyfall, No Time to Die, Spectre, QoS.
The only major downside was I went to the 'bring your baby' showing with our 4 month old but the majority of the little buggers slept through so it wasn't as bad as I feared. Probably why 3 hours felt so long though...

Safin keeps talking about his dad. I suspected they were going to name him as Dr. No or something.

I can't remember which Batman movie it was (I think it was 89) but my mum rented it out for me on its VHS release from the local video shop and it had an awesome embossed case that was like Batman's chest armour with the bat logo on it which really wowed me. Ah, simpler times.

The Ritz video becoming a Blockbusters was a major evolution for my pokey little Southern town. It felt like we'd grown up.

Only time I remember a cinema crowd applauding was at the end of Trainspotting but it was a late night viewing in Brighton.

I'm not exactly mister cinema, especially in these covid times, but the sole example of audience participation I've had over here was a few hoots at the line in Skyfall about selling the guns to a collector in Idaho.

Just seen it. Was very good but it definitely could have used a bit of a trim. Ana De Armas was a particular highlight and no not just for that reason, but with my boy whispering "she's totally going to die" when she first appeared to by the end of her section going "she was awesome". But yeah. Decent. I liked it.

Yeah agreed. She has potential. Remi was awful though. Well, the writing for him was at least. Had good bits in places but I'd say "good" as opposed to "excellent".
I really want an imax cinema setup at my house though:)

I think Remi Malek has given the same performance in everything I've seen him in. I don't mind that, I quite like nervy twitchy character actors, but he's not really leading-man material (not that he is in this).
Chris Walken managed it for a while, so who knows.

He was in the Need for Speed film, I think, where he was completely different to that.

He's just not chilling in this. A successful bond villain needs to be chilling. We're talking whenever jaws used to come on scene. You'd be shitting yourself because the guy is genuinely dangerous. You need that edge. All this talk and pomp is no good in a bond film. I just couldn't care about him and you *need* to care about a villain.

Yep, they give him no good intrigue or threatening scene, like Silva or Blofeld's memorably moody intro in Spectre. There's a half-ass 'my daddy was a poisoner' thing but it's all incredibly weak, considering he's supposed to have been plotting for years and manages to kill off the rest of Spectre. It's a spectacularly underwritten part.

None of the Craig villains are chilling, imo, and all go out with a whimper.
Le Chiffre gets shot by Mr White. Greene gives a little fight, to his credit. Silva gets a knife in the back, stumbles and dies. Blofeld crawls out of a helicopter and gives up. The only physically dangerous individual in this run is Hinx (Dave Bautista in Spectre). They all have wealth, tools and lack of empathy.
By the same token, Safin fits the mold. He’s unhinged, calm and calculated, and has tools at his disposal. But he is a bit crap, agreed.

Le Chiffre personally imperils Bond's little Jimmy.
Dominic Green mostly does fuck all, he's naff.
Silva blows the shit out of Skyfall and is about to kill M.
Blofeld uses his special needles to nearly give Bond a lobotomy.

If I may be so bold, I think NTTD is my second favourite of the DC era. I've found Mendes' two films to be a bit lacking in energy at times and quite distant and overly formal, but this latest one really benefits from the romantic angle and some of the cinematography at times was absolutely beautiful.

Saw it last night. It's better than Spectre, but that's about it. There's a couple of decent actions scenes early on, but by the end it may as well be Robocop marching around the evil genius' lair.
As with Spectre, it's a hopeless baddie with a half-arsed plan that doesn't really make any sense. If the action scenes and the baddie in a Bond film are both dull, then you're not really left with very much. The Mission Impossible films have been doing this sort of thing much better for years now.

Blofeld uses his special needles to nearly give Bond a lobotomy. All facilitated by things they have at their disposal. They just sit and bark orders/press buttons. Safin is no different. He's definitely underutilised but he fits in alongside the rest for style of villain.

I liked it quite a lot. Thinking back on it a few hours later, there are some flaws and the 'main' villain's a bit underwhelming. But the action is very intense and it actually managed to make me care about the Lea Seydoux character(!)
While the action is very intense, it does slightly fall back on the same old gunfights and car crashes. The stuff at the beginning was a bit more creative.
Agreed on the agent in Cuba being very fun.
Not sure if it's better or worse than Skyfall, but it's up there at about #2 in the craig ones.
If you haven't seen Spectre (which isn't great) a lot of it isn't going to make much sense.
More details in the BIG spoilers: i *have* seen all the Craig movies, and I still spent the first 30 minutes or so thinking she was Blofeld's daughter... until my memory kicked in.
I think having 2 big villains made the plot more interesting, but it did mean it ended up sidelining Remi until the last quarter of the movie, and tbh I still don't really know what his world domination plan was all for. Him going after spectre and blofeld made sense, but after that was done, it was kinda like they just needed him to be a world destroying doctor evil for plot reasons, and kidnap Lea for plot reasons.
His performance was good imho, but he didn't really have a lot to work with.
I also found some of the dialogue surprisingly clunky or on the nose... the Time To Die line was almost up there with "What happens to a toad when it gets hit by lightning?"
The new 007 was a bit underused imho.
Really, it was a bit of a cheap trick to introduce the daughter just to immediately use her as an emotional plot device... but darned if it didn't work for me. I was quite emotional at the end.
I think having kids does this to you. Any movie, even terrible ones, where there's a kid in jeopardy becomes an emotional rollercoaster I was rather expecting M to lose his job at the end, given the shit he'd have been in after shooting missiles at the Kuril islands... and it would have been kinda fitting.

I do agree that Malek was very underused, and I still don't really know what the hell his motivations were or exactly what he was doing. I maybe missed something but can't see why he had such an attachment to Madeleine either, or felt such a connection with Bond - the guy shouldn't even have really been on his radar. In fact thinking about it, I still have no realy idea about what the hell Quantum and then Spectre, and then Saffin were all about. First one existed, then the other took over, then the other took over, all in pretty meh ways. Didn't detract so much as I've not been a massive fan of any Craig era Bond baddies. Everything else was so enjoyable that I didn't really care.

Actually suprised at all the Bond love. I thought Casino Royale was interesting from it being alot more grounded, but everything since personally I thought has been genuinely awful.
For me they all lack any sense of peril, depth of character, interesting writing..just anything of substance to draw you into the movie.
I just find them all strangely empty and soulless, so much so I can't help but think "what's the point"
