The South Park Post Covid Special that released today is pretty brilliant.
“He’s not fucking vaccinated! He’s the fucking one!”
“I just need to see the research, you know”
“It’s been 40 years! That’s enough research”

It's about the first expedient thing they've done. Yeah, I was half expecting them to announce a 2 week tourism drive with some of the countries first.

It's about the first expedient thing they've done. Presumably, none of them have any business interests or holiday plans there.

Quite a catchy name then. B.1.1.529 The UKHSA says it is the "worst one we've seen so far" and has a spike protein that is "dramatically" different to the original COVID strain.

Quite a catchy name then. B.1.1.529 It’s getting a named designation tomorrow. We’re up to the Greek letter Nu. The new variant will be the Nu variant.

They've just stuck a bunch of African countries on the red list so theres obviously genuine concern there. BBC News telling us don’t panic but be alarmed Good to know There’s no news like bad news. Feels like this is never going to end.

Only 4 more until the Rho variant, which will have a problem with authority but look really great in a Starfleet uniform.

It's all a bit depressing. Do wonder how much traction they'd get if they imposed new restrictions.
If new mutations keep cropping up, which seems highly likely, should they're be a point where wejust give up fighting it, at least in terms of restrictions?
Not saying we should, and we haven't reimposed any domestically yet anyway, but would that be a cycle we want long term?
It's just tiring and depressing and I'd just started to feel... Well, not optimistic about life, but at least not entirely negative.

It looks more and more likely that the only way forwards is to crack each others heads open and feast on the goo inside

I do feel kinda bad for my friend who is stuck in SA. She's been going on about coming back to the UK this Christmas, and seeing her parents that she hasn't for two years (she married an Afrikaner) and eating the food she can't get over there for a few months now. I imagine she's a bit disgruntled.

It's a really tricky subject though. Can't help but think the better way around it is by educating people, not through brute force. The eradication bof smallpox is held up as a medical triumph on how vaccines can be effective. You don't hear so much about people literally kicking down doors and dragging people out from under their beds to administer it, which became necessary in the third world in order to achieve that aim.

I had a thought last night, maybe the only way to get rid of Covid is global co-ordinated restrictions and vaccination. As in everyone has to implement the same restrictions by law given certain levels of infections.
IF that succeeds, the same "tight" global co-operation could be used on climate change policy. Covid could inadvertently save us.
Then I woke up and laughed.

The speed which the UK gov has moved on this one worries me, unless you think it's possible they've learned from past mistakes... Still a few direct flights coming in from southern Africa this morning...

Still a few direct flights coming in from southern Africa this morning... Under a competent government, it would be concerning. Under this shower of fuckwits..... no idea.

There’s going to be British citizens in Southern Africa that need to return on those flights right. The ban doesn’t come in until Sunday morning

It will be here already surely? Is there any positives in this one? I guess we don’t know if it’s less deadly yet or how much it can infect someone who already has good immunity, right? Let’s have some glass half full stuff on here with this one to make us all feel better about it. Could this all still fizzle out as a concern?

Sounds like no one really knows at the minute. It's clearly got everyone in the know shitting themselves though.

You would hope the sensible thing will be done and any reamining inbound flights from the second this became a thing are subject to extremely strict quarantine measures as a precaution.
Though I'm sure the reality is that in a couple of weeks we'll do the same thing we did on the other variant that jetted over here and practically have people's faces on the side of milk cartons begging for them to turn themselves in.

I suppose one big positive is that the variant shows up on PCR tests which should make it a lot easier to track?

I think they've pretty much confirmed that they won't be doing anything with the flights arriving this morning. Everyone will just be allowed straight off and then on to public transport. We also won't be doing anything about people that arrive from these places via another flight. We'll get the hang of this quarantine thing eventually.
