You can switch off the avatar pictures and signatures and shit in the settings. Go to profile --> edit profile --> settings |

This place has some nice touches, like seeing updates to threads that you've participated in. There are probably lots of other QOL improvements.
I quite like the avatars even if they are big, easier to pick out people.
