The funny thing about the 2019 lot is that they all, to a man, seem to despise their constituents. Not in the old fashioned 'posh old etonian baffled to somehow be representing Worksop' kind of way but a very real 'I got bullied at the local comp' spiteful way.

A lot of the 2019 Red Wall Tories were complete no-hopers that their Conservative Associations put up with no expectation of them winning, probably anyone who had any talent assumed they were on a hiding to nothing so didn't put themselves forward as candidates. The scumbags winning almost certainly gave them a very inflated ego when a pot plant could have possibly won some of the seats given how people felt about Magic Grandpa.
The dregs will hopefully be wiped away with the general election.

The government have scraped the position of Minister for Disabled People www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-67717311Instead it will be run alongside the duties of the Minister for Legal Migration. So now we have two ministers for migration but none dedicated to disabled people. a) fuck that b) this is clearly a cabinet being designed to fight an election rather than run the country

Just create a bill saying everyone is able bodied and no more disabilities.
Perfectly sensible.

He came out with something along the lines of “I was in the army, I wasn’t trained to lose” or similarly pathetic

And a few years later threatened the highest ranking soldier in the army that he’s get Dominic Cummings to shout at him

Was that before or after he totally vanished for about a year, I forget
You know, when the Met said an MP was under investigation for rape. That year.

Again, that's one of those things that - big picture - is a benefit. I've seen communication and mental health issues drastically change since social media became ubiquitous among under 18s.
A structured education plan to encourage diversity in communication and get them away from reliance on phones would be great. Maybe no mobiles until the age of 14-16.
However, that's not why this lot would be doing it. Proper "right thing wrong reasons".

Hmm. That feels like coming at it from the wrong way around. We can’t have young adults suddenly needing to learn how to use a phone when the rest of the world has had a head start of many years. And they’re used in school for lesson research regularly. The issue is with the general “stickiness” the tech companies build in, something we’re all subject to but kids especially susceptible, of course. Any sort of ban will be worked around anyway- couple of idiot parents have effectively allowed their kids Snapchat access since ten here by giving free use of their account whenever it was wanted. Banning? No. The horse has bolted, not sure how you *would* put reigns back on though…

All the crap the Tories are launching at the moment is just chaff that they can use in the election to say "Well what are Labour doing about it eh?"

If they went for banning all algorithmic based social media feeds, I'd vote Tory. That stuff is cancer, the true AI threat.

I think I broadly agree with geefe’s last line. There are demonstrable negative consequences for young people using social media but I don’t think the government understands them which is why they’re throwing something almost uncertainly unworkable at the wall.
In principle, doing something to help young people navigate this space is broadly a good idea. But whats probably needed is a combination of education and leaning on tech companies to stop them whale hunting rather than any kind of unpoliceable age restriction or blanket ban.
There’s no way the people who came up with uploading official photo ID to pornsites has a clue what the underlying issues with social media are or how to effectively address them.

That story mentions someone killing themselves after viewing content on Pinterest. That’s not a site I go on very often but isn’t it all bespoke tat? If that falls under this then I can’t think of a website that would be suitable under that criteria.

The thing is, the options were limited once Ministers said they wanted to do "something". I was adjacent to the team back then and there were no good options.

... Any sort of ban will be worked around anyway- couple of idiot parents have effectively allowed their kids Snapchat access since ten here by giving free use of their account whenever it was wanted. ... We let my daughter have Snapchat this year, now she's over 13, but held off for a very long time. She was the 2nd last in her peer group to get it, all her friends have had it a while, and it got to the point she was missing out on so much chatter with her class, friends and drama group (separate to school) that is was unfair to keep her off it any longer. She's had good online safety drilled into her and she's under strict rules on how she can use it, with me checking occasionally (plus me creating an account and us being super friends on it - my god it's a messy app!) Some of her friends though have had it for ages, along with TikTok and others, and some of the boys in her class are allowed to play 18 games (and have been for a while). There will always be ways round any restrictions, most noticeably parents who don't know what they are saying yes too. Education and conversations are what's needed - both to/with parents as much as kids.

Agree entirely. We were similar with my 13 year old. Relented on Snapchat, Insta and TikTok. And then quickly rowed back on the latter as he was watching some right old shite. He's not allowed to play 18s despite "everyone else being allowed", which I know is bollocks. His biggest issue is perhaps over sharing stuff, even with friends. Kids are spiteful and there's been a few times it's blown back on him.
