I'm guessing the splits in the tory party is not enough for general election? the entire party has to go, the entire country has been a mess since brexit then boris and all the idiots that followed.

So has anyone wasted their Sunday on Mone’s moan? Is it that it turns out that she’s completely innocent and was never even close to doing the wrong thing, despite what the evidence might prove?

The gall to pay for a pity party documentary rather than fucking off and keeping quiet is quite something.
I just don’t understand who they thought it was for.

It's far too long for her to try and shape the narrative, if she'd done that years ago maybe it would have an impact but now? Yeah good luck with that you fucking thief.

I was just watching a video on the Japanese Magleve line, yknow the high tech one that floats on super conductors and goes at 314mph. It's costing like $150 million dollars per km, last I looked HS2 was something like £300 million per mile.
Like how? Just what the actual fuck.

Why the hell Rishi didn't kick the whole Rwanda scheme into the hills, branded as an unworkable idea farted out from Braverman and Braverman only I'll never understand.
Gloriously the BBC managed to find a member of the public the other day, who did support the Rwanda scheme who then threatened to assault the BBC interviewer when pointed out the person being interviewed themselves was also an immigrant.
There's definitely a conversation to be had on immigration, but why they're doubling down on something seen to be cruel and illegal by even Rwanda as a solution is just depressing. What's extra doubly depressing, is I don't think a single one of the tories believe in the idea, beyond it being the vehicle for the swivel headed in the party to start another leadership vote.

It's not really hard to understand. Despite his many, many, MANY repeated attempts to look like the grownup in the room he's still a Tory cunt. A Tory cunt who rehired the HS who previously had to resign in disgrace.

And, unfortunately, the great British public are fairly split on whether they support it or not. Heard a pollster talking the other day saying support is about 50/50. Not sure which poll that was, but this YouGov one also has similar results, with 42% supporting (either somewhat or strongly) and 39% opposing (dates back to June, so not sure what they would be now). yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/survey-results/daily/2023/06/30/726e7/1I would guess a lot of the people supporting still don't understand that a) those with successful asylum claims don't come back and b) we get sent asylum seekers from Rwanda. Still, it seems politically naive to continue to pursue the policy, regardless of morality of the whole thing or public support. They must know it won't work and they are only going to end up pissing off the people they are trying to court.

People might be split, but they don't really care about it over other issues, like economy, public services, etc.

Immigration is ranked 4th in importance according to polling, which puts it above climate change, education and poverty. www.ipsos.com/en-uk/economy-remains-most-mentioned-important-issue-facing-britain-while-concern-about-inflation-dropsIt's one of those issues tho that when you drill down to specifics, people's opinions tend to get murkier. Specifically, which immigrants? Health and social care workers? Obvs not. Skilled workers generally? No! Should we honour our obligations under international law? Of course! Students? No, they're different! Despite immigration being "too high" having broad agreement among a lot of people, it's difficult to nail it down to a policy outcome that people find acceptable, or at least doesn't prove divisive and contentious.

I think there's an element of population, especially with the older generation that refuses to accept people are alot more closely connected in the modern world. Both technology and ease international travel has brought the world closer together compared to 30 or 40 years ago.
The idea that England won't forever be a sea of white faces is unnerving to some. Personally reluctant to call it anything other than human nature for the most part, that fear of something different and being drawn to those who feel familiar is built into our DNA.
Muslim friends will tell me how much they love going to a predominantly Muslim country or visiting Mecca, as its mostly Muslim people with a society built around that and wish England was the same as it's comforting to them. Jewish friends also have similar views when visiting Israel.
Personally not a fan of anything, be that man made borders or even faith that divides us all as human beings trying to live our lives. I do think we've come a long way as far as multiculturalism goes, but as current attitudes in the UK and ongoing wars around the world tell you, we all obviously have a long way to go before people treat or view others equally.
In the UK do feel the lack of control with borders along with underfunded public services, heathcare especially helps fuel this resentment. "not only are these people different, with a different culture.. They're making my life worse" The right wing press over the past few decades have also worked their best to "other" immigrants and Muslims especially.
My fear is that illegal immigration is to precious a political weapon to actually fix and to easy a tool for the right to use. Assuming Labour win the next election, I dread to think how right wing the tory party and the mainstream press veer and the depths they sink to win back power.

It probably doesn’t help that British nationalism (which is really just English nationalism) is expressed almost entirely in negative terms of saying who or what is not British in a very fixed way rather than in attempting to create a flexible shared identity that people can buy into or which expresses positivity about what is good here.
I think as long as the understanding of who or what is British/English is discussed by politicians and journalists in terms of “not you” then immigration will be disproportionately consider a ‘problem’ / political tool to use.

I know some uk Indians that have extremely strong views about there being too much immigration and most of them also voted for Brexit. It’s not just white peoples that don’t want the foreigners.

People might be split, but they don't really care about it over other issues, like economy, public services, etc. Also true, and also adds to it being a completely bobbins policy to continue pursuing. There seems to be this believe amongst the Tories that if they just solve this one issue then all their voters will come running back to them. It just appears from all angles completely devoid from the reality of what is actually going on and what people actually care about. The only thing I can really think is that they see it as one of the few issues where they can actually drive a wedge between themselves and Labour. It is pretty clear it isn't working though and hasn't been for some time.

Reading the comments on BBC articles is generally a waste of time, as ever article is full of culture war / labor-vs-tory / rehashing-brexit sniping by the most horrible people, who never listen to each other and generally make you despair about humanity.
The recent one about Rwanda was interesting in that basically everybody thought it was a load of bollocks. Even the right-wing brexit supporting express readers thought it was a shit deal and the government should be focusing on something else. Not sure I've ever seen such agreement on there.
so, in a way, they've united everyone through their shitness.

Its similar to the Rwanda policy itself which seems to have surprisingly broad support but when you drill down into that it shows people dont really understand it properly and when they do, support drops off a cliff. And, really, that is quite deliberate. The government have obfuscated and often outright lied about the terms and purpose of the deal.

This is one of the things about the whole debate I find most triggering on a personal level. Mouthpieces like Tice and Gullis standing up, spouting about 'British Values' and what it means to be British. I am actually quite proud to be British and fairly patriotic on the quiet but in a more esoteric, Grant Morrisons Invisibles, type way. All the old druidic shit, the lore, the legends, the rolling countryside, the fact that most people genuinely arent cunts. Who the fuck are these people to decide that its none of those things but actually low level xenophobia and fealty to a family of inbred germans?

Watching Jenrick yesterday going with this "multiculturalism has failed" angle was vile. Seems this is the new slogan they are all chanting. And when actually asked what he means by that, the best he could come up with was the recent marches as an example of multiculturalism gone bad. Which is weird, as those marches seem to have attracted quite diverse groups of people.

There’s a Billy Bragg book that must be about 20 years old now called The Progressive Patriot where he tries to go through all the good things in the country to say ‘this is a place to be proud of’.
The stop the boats crowd never express anything about what is positive about the country, just a bitter jealousy that someone else might take their stuff.
And on ‘multiculturalism has failure’ have they not looked at their own cabinet? Although it is Jendrick so he might mean the failure has been to allow an Asian man to become PM.

Multiculturalism seems to have been pretty successful to me. Some things could be better, sure, but almost all of those would be improved by *more* multiculturalism, not less.
