I heard about this yesterday. So many people especially younger people will be forced to relocate out of the UK by this or face the prospect of splitting up altogether.
I don't know anyone effected by this but a £38,700 threshold? I wish I earned this much. Actually between me and the wife we are on about £30k max and manage just fine.

It gets worse. The policy will apply to those who are already here under visas the next time theirs comes up for review.

The exemption list will be as long as your arm, once reality bites.

Haha. "Why do you come and say that to my face? No, not like that!" She's such a pathetic coward.

That Indy article that Ian Dunt quotes has me more confused, to be honest. It references household income and the income of the British citizen as £38k, but I thought it was the immigrant that had to meet the threshold. Which one of those three is it? Obviously they're all shit, they're just varying levels of shit.

You would need a visa to work and contribute to spousal household income, to get a visa you need to earn 38k, so you won’t need to apply for a spouse visa in the first place 🤷♂️

It’s mad, I’m entitled to a French passport by virtue of being married for 5 years despite never living or working there, and I will do if I ever pull my finger out to brush my French up enough. Until recently I assumed it was a similar thing here

The ultra wealthy (Tories) are so obsessed with the idea that others are out to take *their* money: through benefits, taxation, public spending, fair wages. Got to shut all the gates.

When my brother emigrated to SA they made his wife sign a ‘he’s your problem’ contract. He doesn’t get jack shit from the state and she’s contractually obligated to make sure he is provided for even if they divorce. Harsh but they still let him in.

It truly is ridiculous but nothing different from this inept government. Someone earning £26k a year as a researcher is seen as a problem because he's a forrin!
The UK is a backwater cesspit of greed and oinkness.

I think you're all assuming that this will actually happen, as a policy. It's clearly been thrown together with no thought and given we've got an election in about 6 months, this won't happen.

You can also meet the requirement if you have a ton of savings, but iirc those savings can't be tied up in something like a house. And getting permanent citizenship, if the spouse even wants that, takes a number of years. So you basically have to keep all your cash sitting around doing nothing for 5(?) years, while paying thousands for visas and leave-to-remains and nhs-surcharges.

Johnson starts giving his evidence, which will be "I did everything right", to the COVID Inquiry today and Sunak is next week, given how fucking awful both are at even slightly hard questioning by journos I'm not sure they'll be able to do much against lawyers I'm not sure this bullshit lasts too much longer.
Sunak won't have any authority left and he's got fuck all now.

My fiancee lives in the Phillipines and planning to relocate here to N Ireland next year. I'm fortunate that my gross salary is over the threshold, plus savings for me and her as well which I hope sees us through but I'd be lying if I said this news doesn't give me massive anxiety. Just a huge jump overnight.

It seems to have gone down like a bowl of sick even within the party, so doubtlessly will be quietly rolled back. Fingers crossed. Must be so stressful for people with plans in place like yours just seeing them all fall apart.
Utterly useless, hateful shower of cunts!

I'm not even affected by this policy, but I don't think I've felt more depressed about the way this country is headed since 2016 - which is quite something considering the last 7 years have just been one low point after another.
I'm absolutely sick of these bastards and their small-minded, selfish, self-serving policies entirely designed to appeal to xenophobes, racists and the absolute worst of us. They've utterly ruined our reputation globally. I just want them fucking gone.

It's amazing that the Conservative policy of making the country so fucking shit no one would really want to live here isn't working well enough so they've got to go even more insane.
They need to go and they need to go now.

For those racists who want zero immigration but a working health sector/economy: Do the job yourselvesWill see if this pipe dream is ever realised. I suppose a lame government can dream up any scenario as long as they know they won't be around to oversee it. Don’t worry, it will be fine. What could possibly go wrong? Staffordshire patients will put their lives in the hands of under-qualified anaesthetists if changes to the appointment process go ahead, a doctor has claimed. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c725g0pr5r1oTBF it's no different to letting a physiotherapist assess if people with severe mental health issues are fit to work as has been the case for our benefits system for well over 10 years.

Recently been watching A Small Light, a really good dramatisation of the story of Anne Frank and her family (it mainly focuses on Miep Gies that organised and helped with their hiding). I've been really affected by it, getting choked up at least 2 or 3 times an episode. It's obviously a sad story and we all know how it ends, so there is that hanging over it, but I haven't really been sure why it has moved me so much.
It strikes me reading stories like those of people facing their plans ruined by this new policy and now also hearing that this very well could be leading to people being deported, just why I'm finding a dramatisation of the persecutions by Nazis across Europe so moving. It is obviously not the same and I wouldn't ever suggest this lot would start work camps, let alone ones that are actually death camps. I don't think it is hyperbolic to say they are setting out a path towards something that is comparable though.
They are effectively adopting policies that the likes of Reform would want to see implemented. So what will their reaction be? They will have to push things a bit further. And then what about the party that comes along to challenge Reform's place as the right-wing provocateurs?

That's just fucking shit. "In line with average earnings" is bollocks, the *median* wage is a good 3-4k lower. And that's also dragged up by old farts - if you're below 30 the median wage is lower still, so sucks to be you if you have the temerity to fall in love and want to marry and live with somebody not from the UK.

And live anywhere outside london. Its kind of nice that this is actually fucking a lot of the right people for a change. A lot of the client media are getting caught up in it because journalism only pays well if you are an MP writing an opinion column.
