It's going to absolutely screw over a whole load of returning ex-pats with their non-British wives.

That photo is something else.
I know people say "Corbyn can't have been worse" but that photo reeeeally makes a strong case for the against column.

It's the politicians fallacy, 'We must do something. This is something. Therefore, we must do this.'
It's amazing how politicians can actually hold two completely contradictory thoughts in their head at the same time.
The current government and the incumbent one both believe in economic growth and limiting immigration in a country where the birth rate is below replacement rates.

If I had two masters and didn’t earn 39k I’d be pretty pissed off, not sure I’d even want to stay!

Aye, I feel a lot of people outside of the South East are in for a shock when they find out people on £39k struggle with basic living expenses.

It's going to absolutely screw over a whole load of returning ex-pats with their non-British wives. We've already been screwed for years. I hope this doesn't screw us even more. It probably will. There are two ways to meet the requirements, salary or savings, and the savings requirements were already very high. I hope those don't go up even more. Have they still not made the requirements regional? Because it basically means you have to live somewhere like London to be able to meet the salary requirements, but then the housing costs make that impossible. I'm sure one of the arguments for Brexit was that we'd be able to limit all those uncontrolled migrants from inside the EU, so that'd allow fairer rules for non-EU migrants, such as spouses. That never happened!

The home secretary said the plans will help give the "biggest ever reduction in net migration",
As if that is such an achievement. Just make the number bigger and the reduction will go down further. The actual cleverly thing to do is set our what number we need, and how the proposed policy matches up.

Given how spectacularly they’ve missed the numbers they promised; no political party will ever again put a specific number on it.

The replies to this sort of post are just disgusting. Makes me ashamed that some people think like this - bots and trolls notwithstanding etc.

MP married to a foreign doctor sounded pretty sweaty this morning on the radio as he batted questions about it. Even he didn't sound convinced by this.
Yes, immigration adds pressure to public services but...
- you underfund them already - you expect Brits to do the job but charge them to train to do it - you aren't providing the wages or the support for British people to do the jobs, either
So, even if all the immigrants stop, it'll just collapse anyway. In this scenario, the solution is probably DON'T GET ILL

My last ex had to leave because she couldn’t make £20k working in a supervisory role in local govt thanks to austerity cuts. There’s no way the new earnings proposal could possibly work, you’d effectively remove an entire tier of the working population with no one willing to replace it. If I had two masters and didn’t earn 39k I’d be pretty pissed off, not sure I’d even want to stay! Welcome to a career in the education sector

You have to pay like 500quid to get NHS access, right?
[edit]
"It is £624 per year for all other visa applicants Since most people migrate to the UK under a 5 years visa, for example the Skilled Worker Visa, applicants can expect to pay £3,120 in addition to all their admin and registration fees."

Edit: hadn't seen the above when posting *sigh*

There was a Lib Dem on Question Time last week getting hammered by Fiona Bruce for saying the desirable level of immigration was that which meets the needs of the country. Bruce was piling in over and over demanding to know why the LD wouldn’t say immigration was too high or how they’d reduce it.
It was a pretty miserable display of where the “debate” sits right now.

I haven't read all the details, if they're even available yet, but if it's as the headline state and it applies to me then basically we're locked out of coming back to the UK. It was hard enough with the previous requirements. I wonder if you phrased it "Should British people be allowed to marry people from other countries, or should this right be limited to the rich?" how many people would vote for it.

This new immigration plan has got that cunt Jenrick's slimy hands all over it. No way Cleverly, barely a few weeks into the new role, drafted these policies like this (not that I am giving him a pass for this, he;'s still a twat). Goes to to show how much of a disarray the current government are in that ministers will just force through their ideas just to win favour with the right.

It is funny. They cant do anything about migration other than turn the taps off for lower skilled workers...... who have skills we are absolutely desperate for

This country doesn't have a government any longer it's just a headline generating machine that will say any old shit to try and move the needle in the polls and it's not working. Time for the manatees to be set free.
