Because for years the tories have been winning votes on an anti immigration platform, it makes much more political sense to beat them with their own stick following their failure to “control it” like they’ve been promising. its all about optics, coming out and championing immigration now would just give the tories a way of shifting the argument on how you’re the enemy of the people

Yeah exactly. It's pretty much am open goal at this point because of how spectacularly the Tories have failed to meet their own targets.

Inflation rises "We can't help it, it's because of international forces."
Inflation falls "We did it, great success."

There's the old Napoleon quote, never interfere with your enemy when they're making a mistake.

But I thought the government was *trying* to get more workers?! Allow me to answer that by using your own words.
"All the screams about 750k make it sound like it's entirely made up of people coming over in small boats."
There's a certain Conservative voting demographic that only sees "forrin" and they must be pandered to, whilst also trying to fix the gaping staff hole in the NHS and other services.

But wouldn't the Tories do better, in the current climate, marketing it as "we successfully recruited 200,000* new medical and care workers from overseas!" rather than "we miserably failed at stopping all those horrible scary foreigners in boats!" (because they mostly don't exist) ?
*I can't be bothered to look up the proper number.

Same with the small boats, its an own goal caused by them needing to appeal to elderly racists while battling with the reality that migration is a key economic driver.
And as with the 'we need to look after our own' rhetoric heard in wetherspoons up and down the land, we wouldnt have things like key skills gaps if we didnt actively punish students and people wanting to learn. You hear them talking about skilling up the native population and then not only do they do fuck all about it, they take money away from education budgets and slap more on university fees.
I mean, fucking hell, who in their right mind would go into hock for a nursing degree when you would ultimately end up earning more money in a call center?

They’ve convinced the public that all immigration as bad because it should be an easy win to control the legitimate numbers coming in on visas and permits while claiming it’s all boat crossings, and they’ve totally fucked up in limiting either

The graphs are extraordinary. Tootling along, slight decline then *BAM* braverman and patel take over.

Bet Braverman was so annoyed she didn't get trouble like what happened in Dublin last night while Home Secretary so she could blame it on the "silent majority" being worried about immigration.
Silent majority being scumbags who wanted to break things and steal charity boxes are clearly the victims when it comes to immigration.

That would be the Robert Jenrick that should possibly be in prison for accepting bribes? What a lovely fellow he is.

Has anyone looked to see how many of these New Conservative types will still have seats come the next election? I'm assuming quite a few of them are from the red wall seats and likely to be given the boot as soon as there is an election. You would think if Sunak had any guts at all he doesn't he would just threaten them with an election every time they say stupid things.

It's an empty threat though as they know he's just as fucked as they are, the Nazi, sorry New, Conservatives are too small in number to really give him that much trouble at the moment.

Yet that group isn't so small that the party seems to constantly feel the need to placate them. Plus, the rhetoric that people like Lee Anderson and Braverman keep spouting is surely doing massive damage to the party, tarring the lot of them even if the group itself is small. Even if Sunak is only worried about his own skin, you would think senior members of the party would want to snuff them out. Then again, this might be trying to find sense in a place that is completely absent of it.

I still have an issue that I don’t see a problem with 200k+ a year coming here. As long as they live where there’s work available then there’ll be enough of a distribution that most people wouldn’t notice a shift in demographics. Even if there was a shift I really don’t care, as long as crime stays low and taxes go into services, and being foreign doesn’t mean there’ll be more crime.
I’ve been to enough places in the UK to know non uk born people are a tiny minority in large swathes of the country anyway.

Though assuaging people isn't quite right. The polling shows people didn't actually care or notice the small boats issue until the Tories and their newspapers started banging on about it. So it's a rod for their own back that they keep highlighting. Which pushes it up the list of concerns and around the loop we go again.

Robert Jenrick always looks so pleased with himself - a ghost of a human. Im always surprised when I hear him speak as he looks like the kind of person who says 'chimley' I always think of him as a weaselly Dickens character: "Good afternoon madam, Robert Jenrick at your service."
Even his surname looks Dickensian.
