It was also New Labour who removed Asylum Seekers right to work. Though that may have been Blunkett

"Non-position" is the wrong word, as they obviously cover a lot of ground that is important to the everyday operation of the country. It is right to say that the role is a thankless one though and that it isn't one that has been historically good for career progression. Of the four great offices of state, it is bottom of the pile of the ones you want.

As much as Nadine Dorries is fucking useless if what she says in her book, as detailed by Alan Rusbridger in this Twitter thread, is accurate this is pretty serious. Deliberately changing advice from a minister to the Prime Minister to get someone others want in a role is very dodgy. threadreaderapp.com/thread/1722574667607662636.html

I'm not sure I'm ready from the new levels of hell that any new home secretary is going to unleash.
I just want it to stop already but I know we have to endure atleast a year more đ

I'm pretty sure it's 'Herbert'.
Oh, no. No no no. NO.
I sincerely doubt any of Dorries' semi-soused rants will have a material impact, beyond shifting a few copies of her book to braying Mail and Telegraph readers, but the prospect of a political comeback for Johnson is little short of horrifying.

Tbf I remember Jacqui Smith putting forward weird authoritarian policies under labour. Looking back some of it looks quaint in today's climate but actually you can see the seeds were being sown back then. ID cards and attempting to detain people for up to 42 days without charge. They absolutely lost me with their post 9/11 spy state push. I mean, looking back, just being annoyed about the amount of CCTV cameras was a golden age but even so, yes, they had some very authoritarian policies in that regard.

I believe Dorries's book has had the endorsement of David Icke. I don't think we need to pay it much attention.

Strange how the Tories like schools to be independent up to the point of telling them where to get stuff from

Strange how the Tories like schools to be independent up to the point of telling them where to get stuff from "Well of course, we want our schools/people/[Insert your favourite here] to be strong, independent entities" *Decision they don't like is made* "Hold on, not like that"

For now, though, I feel pretty confident in saying that she's the worst HS I've ever seen. I see youâre still writing headlines for the Star Uly

elstoof Michael Green, Corrine Stockard and Sebastian Fox, depending on the week. Which is convenient because that's how long he was there

If I were Les Dennis, I'd sue. The Star has easily been the best tabloid for giving the Tories some deserved shit over the last 8+ years - way before some genius at HQ thought of the heavyweight bout between Iceburg "THE TITANIC KILLER" lettuce and Liz "PORK MARKETS" Truss

if she survives till wednesday (when rwanda flight court case comes back) then her and her wing will be emboldened for ignorning the PM's wishes and getting away with it. If the government lose the case - rwanda flights judged unlawful - there'll be no stopping her she'll be screaming leave the ECHR and fuck the good friday agreement and everyone who's still carrying shrapnel or worse from those fucking days - safer to have her on back benches by then now it's proved she can say what she wants from the front ones
if they somehow win the case then fuck this fucking country

The longer she stays in the easier it is for Starmer et al to get loads of kicks in. It's all making Starmer look strong at the moment.

Absolutely hilarious to hear Braverman talking about hate marches in N Ireland, when the ones marching are unionists.

The PM still has "full confidence" in Braverman, according to a Downing Street spokesperson.
So she basically has carte blanche to say and do whatever she likes with no repercussions now, right?
Sunak really is the epitome of spinelessness.

I'm now pretty sure Braverman watched Emma Thompson in Years and Years and thought that would be a great idea...
