Could be Tory spin to claim some sort of victory on Thursday if they hold on to either of the seats in the by-elections, a "leaked" internal memo says they predict they'll lose both of what should be safe seats.

Expectation setting - even if Labour win if it isn’t with a majority well into five figures the Tories can claim that Labour have failed to meet expectations and predictions of a general election win are grossly overstated.

I saw an article in The Guardian yesterday saying they have looked at the spending for these by-elections and it seems Lib Dems have pulled back in Mid-Bedfordshire, which is a really good sign.
The rhetoric from Lib Dems has been indicating that they were putting their all into it, but polling showed them as being at 20%, whilst Labour was neck and neck with Tories on 26%. Splitting the vote could really screw this up and no doubt the narrative come Friday would be Labour massive fail if they don't win, even if they eat into the majority much more than they should in this kind of seat.
Hopefully the Lib Dems have seen sense and know they won't win. I also expect they might have said they weren't holding back to avoid accusations of colluding with Labour.

Labour are constitutionally opposed to the notion of tactical voting or working with other parties in electoral pacts but the smaller opposition parties seem to have a less bloody-minded more pragmatic approach to these sort of things.

I’m a big fan of the 20mph and would quite happily have it where I live. Mostly doesnt get above 20 in rush hour Portsmouth anyway! The worst part is the car ‘feels’ like it wants to go faster at that speed - just on the nub between 2nd and 3rd. Which makes me think I’d rather have 15 for the school’s type areas and 25 for the rest, instead of 20. Gears? How quaint  |

Constitutionally opposed, but in practice do support it. Look at the spending on recent Lib Dem target byelection seats. |

I see Hunt is now saying they aim to keep their “promise” of inflation down to 5 per cent by end of the year. I can’t be arsed to check but I feel like a year ago that “promise” was a lot lower than 5 per cent by end of this year.
