That's rather ill advised.

'Australian style points system' was (like every other 'policy') never anything more than a sound bite to appeal to the hard of thinking.

Quite, a sound bite for people you know who aren't actually going to put any effort into researching it, like the £350m for the NHS.

And for people who aren't going to question why we didn't use it for non-EU immigration before quitting the EU if it was such a good system.

Or why the UK didn't enforce the internal EU migration rules either but that would have been awkward as that was to the UK's advantage.

Sunak currently hosting and schmoozing Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of the far-right Brothers of Italy party will please Braverman etc.
Apparently they have both been congratulating each other on their hard stances on immigration...

Saw Cleverley this morning trying to defend Suella attacking the police for going after the golliwog people.
Genuinely wonder what the fuck Martin Luther King would make of this shower.

Having gone through the Canadian points based system I can say with certainty that it’s not at all designed to attract skilled workers. What they want is newly graduated 20-somethings who will be happy to fill the barista/waitstaff jobs in high numbers, it’s so heavily weighted towards under 30s who haven’t yet earned any skills as the points disappear rapidly with age. We only squeaked through with box ticking bilingual bonus, absolute bullshit

No idea if Braverman is a fan of Ted Lasso (probably not) but the timing of a subplot about a footballer criticising the Home Secretary's rhetoric about small boats coming out on the day the illegal Illegal Immigration bill had its third reading was some coincidence.

Decided against it in the end Ah, fair fucks. Big change, not sure one I could do, even with the opportunity. Wife is desperate to retire to sunnier climes but post-Brexit, it's a nightmare.

The longer it went on the more I realised that we’d have just replaced one set of problems for a bunch of other ones, except on the other side of the world where we don’t know anyone. I’m almost the age my mum was when she died so that’s been playing on my mind increasingly the last year or two also, how would we cope if something happened like that without any sort of social support and all those sort of lovely thoughts. It’s still my wife’s dream though, in a bizarre twist of who’s the sensible one and who’s absolutely not in the relationship

What are the criteria for Canadians? From what I can tell it doesn't appeal as a "move to live there" country.

I wasn't that serious about it, but it was definitely weighted towards 20 year old hairdressers. Absolutely no idea if it has changed in the past 20 years though. At the time I *was* in my 20s. But not a hairdresser.

What they all want is basically what we used to have vast numbers of in the U.K. with freedom of movement from the EU - young, enthusiastic people who would fill the essential service jobs, spend all their income on living and enjoying their time in the U.K., hopefully progressing enough in their careers to settle down. They don’t want people in their 40s coming over and taking the important jobs from their own

Our (mainly my) plan is to spend most of retirement in overseas Airbnbs for long stays. Seven if I have to be in the UK for 6 months of the year that’s not too bad. Summer is ok and Christmas isn’t bad. Living in one really nice place all the time appeals but not quite as much as going to a lot of places.

Not a bad plan tbh. Agree re summer and Christmas. Only problem is without buying property and getting a visa, you are limited to 90 days in and 90 days back home. So would take careful planning...

I had always fancied downsizing here and having a few small residences eg one in Scotland, one in Greece or somewhere. But having long stays around is probably a better bet. Of course that's if we have no health issues.....you do take it for granted!

Niesmann and Bischoff are a good make apparently, and you can use it as a battle bus should you ever decide to go into politics.
