And the new government plan is to get the army in to help. If only the army wasn’t so tiny these days. Do the army even know how to drive HGVs through city centres

I would imagine that the army doesn't have many drivers with hgv licenses or CPC.

What about the iconic images of the British army driving articulated lorries through the Helmand province, we’ve all seen them

Do the army even know how to drive HGVs through city centres I think they do have some capable but I’d guess it’s maybe a couple of hundred at most, some of which won’t be in the country and some will be doing other important army things.

And the new government plan is to get the army in to help. If only the army wasn’t so tiny these days. 8400 petrol stations according to wiki, and 80,000 soldiers. so 10 per petrol station, and that needs to allow to for multiple drivers, shift patterns, training, reserves etc and oh yeah, the fact that that's the entire fucking UK army. Better hope the supermarkets look after themselves, that's a much bigger job.

They won’t be manning the stations, they’ll simply be driving the delivery lorries, hopefully the teenage lad on till 3 knows how to do the refilling process when the squaddies arrive though

Let's hope there's some hot English mustard left on the shelves, might as well spice things up a bit. Just imagine the shame of smearing good old trusty British Colemans all over your puckered starfish only to realise that it's horrible diluted American mustard. Barely even a tingle! A horribly sobering thought, which I cannot quench because all I have is Coors light.

The squaddies will man fire trucks filled with gas.
They'll drive the streets spraying precious fuel at poppy wearing citizens armed with buckets.

The teenage lad better be ready for that too.

Yes I see, we should chain one prisoner to every soldier, thus doubling the available help. How do we get the idea to COBRA?
Actually, Priti Patels mobile number is probably 0123456789 so she can remember it. I'll text her.

There are obviously some squaddies that could certainly drive tankers as they have to do that for the army itself and I imagine the ones I've seen drive tank transporters would possibly quite like driving something smaller than normal but there's not a huge amount of them either.
Every time there's some shortage of personnel in any sector the government yells "get the army" while they've also slashed the numbers and we've now got about 80K which will include a lot of people that can't do the jobs they want them to do to paper over the cracks.
Also coming from a garrison town I really wouldn't trust some of them with a fucking pedal car let alone a fuel tanker.

I've got a 500 mile round trip to make on Thursday with a current range of 80 miles showing on the car...
...hoping things improve by then (currently all my local stations are sold out).

The driver shortage has been known about for months; experts in the field flagged the concerns and the government did very little about it
Sounds familiar.

Tangentially, this is why there is a shortage (although your restraint was admirable). A few people started panic buying and everyone who had a journey to make this week wiped the other 90% out ‘just in case’. The Mrs has two shifts in London this week and would normally fill up again after the first one. She sat and queued for half a tank yesterday and absolutely refused to accept she was part of the problem because she apparently was the only person in the country who had a legitimate reason to get petrol.

Yeah pretty much. I'm barely driving now I'm working from home so I usually put about 25 quid in every 2 or 3 weeks. I filled up when I had the chance yesterday.

Driving only for nursery 3 days a week and a weekly shop. About 20 miles into the red on Friday and need to drive 20 miles to drop the car at a garage to be fixed today. I only took 30 quids worth which worked out to half a tank but still felt like a fud being there at all!
