On large companies owning the land while farmers work it: it's probably worth knowing that in some cases the farmers who own the land may have contractors who do the actual farming. I.e. there's a landlord/tenant arrangement effectively already.
In that context, for some farms it would not change operationally what would happen if British Land ltd or someone actually owned it or just some random family owned it via historical accident.

it's a good point but would kick back a bit at an implication an inheritance tax bill results in a farm being split up or sold off rather than just... payed (esp. as it can be payed over several years, and minimised by myriad other means)

Maybe they’ve just set the threshold a bit lower than they should have.
But then this could be like the pensioners where people keep saying the poorest will go without, when they’re the ones that still get support

Its a pity that the way to really solve the problem of financial viability of farms is for supermarkets and food manufacturers to actually pay them the true value of what their produce is worth. Because there’s no way they’d do that without trying to maintain their profit margins by passing all the additional cost onto consumers. Then you end up with farmers v shoppers v politicians while the fat cats like Alan Asda and Terry Tescos are laughing all the way to the bank.
Also, y’know there’s a general need for major land ownership reform in this country where land and property have become investments rather than being sites of utility.

I spend way too much of my day dealing with land rights. It's rare that I have sympathy for them. It does happen but not often.

Farmers bitching about low prices and falling incomes (nothing to do with inheritance tax) everything to do with Brexit.
Didums cunts, you voted for it
Latino people complaining about deportation will be next on the didums cunts list 😝

Farmers bitching about low prices and falling incomes (nothing to do with inheritance tax) everything to do with Brexit. Exactly. I would have more sympathy if they had of also been out protesting about the damaging effects that they were obviously going to experience from Brexit. Chuck in the screwing over they get from the supermarkets as another thing they should have been campaigning against before this. If you own over £3 million worth of land and you can't pay the (still heavily discounted) inheritance tax (over 10 years) then there is either something wrong with what you are doing or something fundamentally wrong with the whole sector itself.

Tesco and Amazon among the companies writing to the government complaining that the NI rises will cause job losses. The absolute cheek of them.

That's Tesco, who definitely were not profiteering during the pandemic, but just coincidentally made record profits.

Any company that’s making several percent profit (before dividends are paid) should be ashamed of themselves if a single job is lost with NI as an excuse.
It does still seem a stupid way of doing it instead of taking the other political hit of just increasing income tax on those that can afford it. It’s the downside of making tax promises that can’t be kept I guess.

Going to be a bit rocky in the centre for a while. Absolutely boggles the mind that these arguments are made when you can clearly see we are all being taken for mugs.

Clarkson turning up at the Westminster protest really feels like he’s done it for the drama of it being on his show.

Most people are genuinely sympathetic to them, they’re a massive part of the community and we see what they have to deal with day in day out but the most commonly said thing about them is that “there’s no such thing as a poor farmer”. They basically the boy who cried wolf down here.

The farmers should ask the fishers how Farage did fighting their corner. They need to ask themselves that question. He stood on stage and used farmers as a tool during brexit when it suited him as much as fisherman. What has he done for them since? How much money did he make of their misfortune. Surprised no one hasn’t lamped him.

Talking of cunts, Clarkson buying the farm (not literally) was a tax dodge, sure he admitted it
