There's a guy at work across from me on a call discussing politics, he reckons that "the blues are the party of the working class" and that "I grew up on a council estate and always voted Labour until 4 or 5 years ago"
Fucking hell what a deluded cock.
"Only another a 4.5 years"...
It's fucking depressing.

Looked fun him up, he's a systems administrator in the change function in the property functions team.
I don't even care if people dislike labour, but anyone can look at the last 5 years and think "yeah these conservatives are the party of the working class" is frankly a thick cunt.
It's annoyed me because this is what we're up against. People buying the fucking tabloid soundbites. It fucking sickens me that people can delude themselves.
Ah least be honest about it.

Every ex labour person I've met who switched to the conservatives in 2019 seems to be stuck in some kind of GB news loving purgatory and hate labour more than anything else.

Also overheard some office politics discussion yesterday and heard the usual "they are all the same" and "they all go to the same school" bollocks. Whether you think the budget was good or not, how anyone can look at what they announced and conclude that they are all the same is completely beyond me. They also then went on to some moan about too many managers in the NHS and how they knew someone who knew someone that worked for NHS doing some HR management that was on £150k.
The young person in the group also piped in with a "I don't even bother voting".
Could have been worse, one said they voted Green and then the group also talked about how awful Trump is and that Project 2025 all sounds scary, so they at least weren't right wingers. Goes to show that the right wing narrative that tars all politicians from the main parties with the same brush still manages to cut through to people who aren't on that side though.

I'm still just awestruck that anyone can look at the last government and not think "these are incompetent"
Still I suppose it's good to not exist in an echo chamber, but I'm concerned about what will happen in 5 years, because no matter what Labour do people will just delude themselves and vote for utter cretins

The apathetic are the people that annoy me the most, even the batshit right wingers believe in something even if it is batshit.
Repeating bollocks like "they're all the same" should have a line of text pop up underneath them when they say it with "this person has decided to let other people think for them."

I honestly believe a large swathe of the population are too thick and ignorant to vote.
I do get that it would be open to horrible manipulation and corruption, and near impossible to do in an impartial way, but having to pass some sort of test to display actual understanding of policies and facts and critical thinking before being asked to vote sometimes feels like a great idea.
(I'd probably include myself in the too thick to vote camp)

Yep, an increasingly unsurprising result. Don't think Labour should rest too much on their laurels with the announcement though. She might be batshit, but she has demonstrated pragmatism in the past (not going along with dropping all the EU laws and not going along with leaving ECHR that would go down with the membership). If Labour can't turn around the current public opinion then the next election could see that majority vanish.

Depends if she can shut up about culture war bollocks for 5 minutes. Doubtful. We're also assuming she'll last well over a year in the role.

Let's hope she's the only populist, right-wing nutjob who ascends to power within the next few days.

Party which is now comprised of stupid racist morons votes for the stupidest, most racist moron in Britain to lead then. Not really that surprising.
Looking forward to her brain melting when she learns she can't just yell WHAT IS A WOMAN THOUGH or machine gunning immigrants when the discussion is about the NHS or something.

I think Jenrick is/would have been worse in every way. And they're safely tucked away in opposition for the foreseeable. So all in all: meh

Those who are thinking she might not last long in the role, have opposition leaders changed that frequently between elections? My understanding is that there's usually nowhere near as much turnover in shadow or other party positions, because they're not really responsible for anything.

The 1922 Committee have also changed the rules to.make it harder to remove the party leader. Now 33% of MPs need to submit letters etc.

That was always going to happen. They had to change it because with such low number of seats they only needed a dozen or so to send letters in to trigger a vote.

She’s obviously evil. The worst Tories won’t see that but moderate ones will. Do think Jenrick- who’s showed a bit more popular charm (by Tory standards) and an ability to bend his spine whichever way the wind blows might have been more of an opposition.

Labour rarely manage to change leader at any point and they're the ones in opposition most the time.

I think the biggest issue that Labour will have with Badenoch isn’t that she’ll be any good at holding them to account on any policy issue or lay a glove on Starmer in PMQs. Its that having a right wing culture warrior leading His Majesty’s Opposition legitimises (or at least gives license to) all the worst right wing culture war inclinations of the press. And Labour have shown that they will bend under pressure from the media.

I think the worry is that as long as she can appear vaguely competent (at least enough for right wing press to champion her) and make it sound like she will be able to save people a few quid on their tax bill, people will mostly ignore the culture war stuff. British people don't seem to be massively swayed by that rhetoric, besides a small group, but I equally think they won't be hugely put off by it if they are fed up with Labour and are presented with some easy economic answers.
