Keen to know the price of those these days. I guess not 10p anymore like Freddo's?

Back when there wasn't a cap in place we just stopped using busses altogether as soon as we moved out of London, as it was too close to "fuck it, let's just get a taxi instead" money. This feels like a step back towards that kind of thinking. Not impressed at all, even if it only means a couple of extra quid a day on my office days.

Monster munch are the same in the more-ish stakes (but not price). Basically there's only about 7 crisps per pack, so you really need the larger 'grab bag' for the proper experience. Healthy eating be damned when Flamin' Hot monster munch are an option.

There's probably behind the scenes info from bus companies saying they can't go on and need bigger subsidies, Govt haven't got the money, so this would be a way out of it. If the bus companies cut even more routes, public transport will get hit even harder.

I gave up using buses when a return cost almost £4 (and they never turned up), so now just walk or cycle the 4 mile round trip.

Buses in Greater Manchester are fixed cost £2 single journey £4 return. You can do an 70 mile round trip for £4 which is a bargain, but will take 4 hours.

Half term and I took my daughter into town today, actually on the bus, since we noticed the other day we hadn’t done it for years. £3.80, and there was one other payer on with us, so £5.80 total for about 40 mins of that bus’s time, nowhere near paying a wage, maintenance, insurance and fuel. Loads of other on, but all boomers with free passes. They’re vital, for numerous reasons, but it must be SUCH a loss running them. I agree, bumping up the price feels like a backwards step but where *does* the money come from when so many other things are falling apart.

Getting a family of four into Brighton is more or less the same price as a taxi. But you don’t get the same smell of urine and desperation so it’s swings and roundabouts.

Pensioners can fuck off and pay the fare for the bus or the train like the rest of us.
And while that’s happening they can get to fuck at rush hour, clogging up the carriages and the buses with their priority seating the total bastards

The sandwich shop in the village here does a Monster Munch bag one bigger than grab bag but smaller than a bag you’d tip into a big bowl on a buffet. Its like £1.65 and actually fills you up.

The less of them on the road the better.

Felt inevitable tbh, even under the previous government it was on the table. And at least there's still a cap. Short trips here used to be £2.50, longer ones up to £4. Be interesting to see where they pitch the short trip now...
Labour really should have had a budget much sooner.

Hopefully they’re briefing all the misery in advance and saving some goodies to steal headlines on the day because this feels like an all pain budget at the moment

It does seem to be short term pain for long term gain.
On the bus fares, the bus fare to and from my school in the 90s was over £2 without a bus pass. Ditto getting to University in Manchester in the 00s (if you weren't doing Fallowfield up Oxford Road anyway, that was 50p)

The Stockport Rd ones cost a fiver (possibly in to town not Uni). Was always worth while to walk from Victoria Baths to Rusholme to get the cheap fuckers. The buses in Manchester are a revelation compared to those days. Oxford Rd might have been cheap but with like 3 or 4 operators refusing each others return tickets and all undercutting each other so hard the buses were absolutely fucked and. Ot maintained. I loved the change when I came to London. Basic shit like spider maps at the stops or the next stop signs inside the bus...

Yeah when I moved to London in 2008 it was pre GPS on your phone. Just having all the buses say this stop is Pentonville Road was a life saver when you were going places you didn't know. Then having maps in all bus stops clearly showing how it links to other things like tube stations. Or at least to somewhere you knew a night bus home ran from. You could get pissed anywhere in town and confidently get home. Was fucking amazing compared to Birmingham or Manchester. Where you really needed to know before hand.
The new Bee stuff in Manchester is great though. Glad other cities are finally getting this stuff. Even if Google Maps now exists.

letting local authorities outside london run bus services again will be the big thing, because if they're already subsidising routes then if the bus company is owned by the council it removes a stage where some private company with offshore accounts is extracting money i'm not crazy about upping the cap. it hits the poorest hardest and has no effect on those who don't pay for buses but who benefit from them (pensioners who don't pay, and chelsea tractor drivers who benefit from the lower congestion and emmissions that buses bring) BUT i'm hugely against whinging about pensioner free bus passes because as a forum we frequently whinge about elderly drivers and suggest we take their licences away. if we're taking their licences, and taking their bus passes, then you're legally obliged to take your mother to the shops. and to their friends. and to the bingo. and they've got that doctors appointment on tuesday remember? and they fancy going to harrogate on saturday so you'll be driving them yep? and they want to go see that new film at the weekend.
and i don't know about you, but i can't be arsed. so i accept the risk of 70 somethings at 20mph or at least accept the cost of giving them free bus travel

Just a technical thing but TfL doesn't actually own or directly run the buses. London Buses does a few things: - Collects the fares for itself
- Monitors the buses
- Decides what routes and service levels will happen
- Specifies the buses (paint em red)
- Provides maps and so on
It then puts contracts out to run bus routes. On a fixed contract. Nobody can try underbidding or pulling any shenanigans. They then have their services closely monitored so TfL can yank contracts or hand out bonuses to the companies for actually meeting performance metrics.
Basically TfL is so big the bus companies can't really negotiate much as it's either do the job properly at a set price or fuck off out of London, which is by far the biggest bus market in the UK. Good luck using your fleet of right hand drive, red double-deckers abroad motherfuckers.
It basically inverts the way franchising works on the railway. Where TfL retains all the power and organisational stuff. Private companies can try work out how to make a profit through efficiency but that's all their problem.
The new Manchester system is similar but there's Franchise bidding involved I believe.
For really small places taking it in house with the local authority is probably a good idea as Cornwall isn't going to have the clout to bully big bus operators.

TIL FG doesn't like OAP drivers ahh this is probably me being a bit reactionary. society in general is quite quick to " take their licences/retest at 70/80" and when i've seen it come up the FG vibe is partly reflective of society - naturally as distinguished ladies and gentlemen we're more nuanced and not so prone to kneejerk absolutes

They did a job, way before tapping your phone to get on the bus.
