Fuck it, throw Levison 2 in there as well. Oh God, yes please! You would think after the first few months of Labour's government* they would have thought about getting that back on agenda. *Not to say their woes have been completely not of Labour's own doing, but it is clear that the press were desperate to stick the knives in as quickly as possible.

The hereditary peers pretty much being done for this week has got so little coverage you'd never know a big change to the way Parliament works was even happening.

I think rather than legislate phones 4 kidz the more palatable thing would be to actually start holding feet to the fire for social media. Legislation needs catching up to the entire and we really need to be busting some balls and demanding better.

While we're at it I want to throw in remote working. This is very London focused. But our grad scheme the kids lived in a random room in a house, better cheaper housing etc. Pre pandemic they used to come in to the office, learn from seniors in person, they all went out together. They would always skank a full round of drinks from the most senior manage in the pub. Remote working they all just sit in rooms in shared houses. It must be absolutely doing their mental health in. You need a government with a large majority to do a kamikaze run, really, who just know they're never going to get a second term and just speed run legislation to get everything done. Fuck it, throw Levison 2 in there as well. E.g. the Atlee government

(For the avoidance of doubt, web forums don't count as social media)

I reckon by time my kids get to secondary school it will be abnormal to use SM until late teens/adults.

i'm more pessemistic - for however bad social media is for kids (and i'm less down on this than many) i think many would agree that hardcore porn is far worse - and look how shit a job we've done removing that from kids' experience. if we can't sort that why would you think we can succesfully stop kids talking to their friends on socials

It's such a mess. Legislation will always be two steps behind, regardless of who you put the obligations on. Even if you ban phones, who is going to police it when libertarians decide that little Johnny needs a phone?

I don't know about the porn. Personally, I'm always kind of amused when I see or hear a journalist around my age acting shocked that 11-13 year olds have seen pornography online. Certainly when I was about that age at the turn of the century, barely anyone of my cohort that had Internet access wouldn't have seen porn. Even if you didn't actively look for it, it was harder to avoid back then.
I would say a much bigger problem is the likes of Andrew Tate, as well as the right wing in general targeting young males. The gender divide on social values is pretty striking amongst the young, with young boys being hugely swayed by traditional values mixed with authoritarian "strong men", whereas girls seem to mostly be continuing the trend of millennials being more liberal.

I mean, I also think it won't be normal for younger teens to have smart phones any more. And we will bring back the BBC micro.

The biggest difficulty in banning the phones isn't the kids, its the parents who want to be able to contact/track their child 24/7, forgetting that was never a thing when they were kids.
Having a forced break from that and the internet is probably a good thing for mental health, although the internet being a cesspit of racists and worse is a bigger issue that'll continue to be ignored.

Don't disagree. It's funny how quickly it becomes a crutch once your kids are out and about. And silly really. So glad it wasn't a thing in my day. By 13, I was out all day, off into London to go to football, Watford and all sorts from my small commuter belt town in Herts.

Mine are currently too young anyway but the thought of giving them a device in a few years worth a few hundred pounds seems so unlikely, but I know it'll happen.

By 13, I was out all day, off into London to go to football, Watford and all sorts from my small commuter belt town in Herts. I was in London almost weekly for gigs from about 14, with absolutely no survival or self-preservation instincts, getting back at 1am. Also from a commuter town so decent distance away with limited contact. I look back and can't believe I was allowed to go (on school nights no less!). I teach ten year olds now and about half have a phone and when you ask it's so parents can keep track on the walk home. Some live on the same street as the school and they're city kids who hardly ever go out 🙄. What changed?! I really hope something has changed before my two (4 and 1) are asking for phones. Internet is poison. I'd miss things like this, but given the choice I'd nuke it. /Old man at 35.

My folks had no idea what I was doing. I'd bellow "Off to David's house to play computer games" on a Sat morning and then go and stand on the North Bank. Had a paper round which covered the fiver entry, 90p travel card, £1 programme. Was ace.

I've been on the streets since I was 5. Literally called my folks last week to let them know I'm ok.

Can we at least recognise the irony in talking about the mental health effects of social media on a forum that a bunch of 40-something males needed to create to allow us to cling together as a disfunctional group of children who never grew up.

Don't worry grandad, sit yourself down it will be lunch time soon. It's your favourite today too, sardine and tomato fish paste with cucumber sandwiches.

Honestly it's getting difficult to have him here. If he keeps playing up he will have to be moved to a retirement home that's better suited to his needs.
